Tom Pursglove MP's Westminster Report

Dear Constituent,

The last two weeks have, once again, proven to be very busy across Corby & East Northamptonshire and I have been working hard, listening to you on the issues that matter, and then campaigning on them for you back in Westminster. Below are some of the things I’ve been up to in the last few weeks.

As ever, if I can be of any assistance to you or your family, please don't hesitate to get in touch using the contact details opposite.

With best wishes,

Tom Pursglove MP

Tonight we leave the European Union:

Well it’s finally happening! Tonight, at 11pm, we will be leaving the European Union - an enormous moment for our country. For me, and the majority who voted to leave locally, it’s a very special moment and I’m really excited about the opportunities that lie ahead, but I do of course entirely understand and appreciate that there are a whole host of different opinions on this democratic decision and that for many this is a moment of sadness. But I genuinely hope that, beyond tonight, as we have so many times in our great country’s history, we can come together as a nation, seize the opportunities of which there are undoubtedly many, and make this new chapter a great success for our country and its people. Watch my video on this, here.
WORKING FOR YOU:
Funding boost for Northants Police:

We promised more funding for local policing and that's exactly what we're doing - keeping our promise with a £9.6 million boost for this coming year. That means more police out on the beat, catching criminals and deterring crime here in Corby & East Northamptonshire. Good news!
An interesting visit to Blue Skies in Corby:

It was great to visit Blue Skies in Corby with Baroness Sugg, the International Development Minister - a fantastic visit and great to learn about the work the company is doing both locally and internationally, which extends far beyond providing top quality fresh fruit on our supermarket shelves. A big local employer, but helping developing countries to grow and prosper too through free trade. You can find out more, here.
Works to the Chowns Mill Roundabout:

Having campaigned hard to secure the commitment to this much-needed major road infrastructure project, works are due to start on the Chowns Mill Roundabout upgrade in early February and will be completed by the winter of 2021/22. More information on the works, and how it will effect road users, can be found, here
Waste incineration debate in Westminster Hall:

Understandably, many local people were keen for me to go along to a Westminster Hall debate this week on the issue of waste incineration, given our ongoing fight against the Shelton Road waste plant plans in Corby.  As I always have, I will keep supporting local people in opposing these plans at every stage and the Minister has agreed to meet with me to discuss my concerns about incineration more generally; an offer I will most certainly be taking up.
Holocaust Memorial Day 2020:

I was honoured to sign the Holocaust Educational Trust’s ‘Book of Commitment’, and again pledged my commitment to Holocaust Memorial Day; honouring those who were murdered during the Holocaust, as well as paying tribute to the extraordinary Holocaust survivors who work tirelessly to educate young people today to make sure the horrors of that time are never repeated. You can find my full post on this, here.
I'm supporting "This Girl Can":

I’m proud to be supporting Sport England’s ‘This Girl Can’ campaign to get more women and girls active and participating in sport. A great campaign and one I am proud to endorse! See my post, here.
Supporting local higher education:

I was delighted to visit the new campus at the University of Northampton to meet with the Vice-Chancellor and other executive university staff. It was great to see students utilising these fantastic new world-class facilities and I enjoyed discussing matters such as apprenticeships and other technical courses, as well as the positive impact the reintroduction of nursing bursaries will make to the recruitment of nurses for our NHS. A fantastic resource and an institution that serves the whole of Northamptonshire and beyond and is a credit to our county!
Supporting grassroots football:

I’m proud to be supporting the FA’s campaign to strengthen grassroots football in our community - not least because we have so many superb local clubs! Grassroots football is worth a great deal to our local economy, and the national economy, and is a great way for people of all abilities to get involved in sport and stay fit and healthy.
Keep Britain Tidy campaign:

I’m passionately supporting Keep Britain Tidy’s ‘Great British Spring Clean’. I’ve long campaigned for people to put their litter in their pocket and take it home. You can join this, the country’s largest mass action environmental campaign, here. We can all do our bit!
Always accessible and keen to help - my weekly surgeries:

I’ve had many productive surgery meetings in the last couple of weeks with local people in Oundle, Corby and Raunds, helping to take up a number of issues, cases and concerns at the end of busy weeks in Westminster. If I can ever help with anything, or for an appointment, please call 020 7219 8043, or email pursglovet@parliament.uk. I’m always happy to help!
