SHS Chinese Placement Survey
If a student is planning to take a Chinese class at SHS in the upcoming school year, please read the following placement information and complete the Placement Survey.  Students new to Chinese can just sign up for Chinese 1 and do not need to take the placement test.  The purpose of the Placement Survey is to help SHS determine the students’ level in Chinese to help the student succeed in furthering his/her knowledge of the Chinese language and culture. Please visit the Chinese portfolio (tinyurl.com/ubrbu4t) for reference and see the guidelines for each class level below:

Class Level
Chinese 1: Students have not studied Chinese before or
Have studied Chinese for 1-2 years and/or  
                    The student’s placement test result indicates Chinese 1
Chinese 2: Students who completed Chinese 1 at SHS or
                    have studied Chinese for 2-5 years and/or
                    The student’s placement test result indicates Chinese 2
Chinese 3: Students who have studied Chinese for 5-9 years and/or
                     The student’s placement test result indicates Chinese 3
Chinese 4H: Students who have studied Chinese for 9-12 years and/or
                      The student’s placement test result indicates Chinese 4H
AP Chinese: Students who have studied Chinese for 12+ years and/or
                       The student’s placement test result indicates AP Chinese

SHS Chinese Program Introduction & Placement Test Information

Please bring pencils and eraser and arrive on time.  


During the placement test, students will be tested in the following categories: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and typing. They will read and listen to conversations/passages and answer multiple-choice questions. They will write and type compositions on the topics related to Chinese culture, current events, and/or news. They will answer conversation questions in speech. The test will include materials from the textbooks, supplementary materials, current events, and news. Please see the SHS Chinese Materials Samples as a reference for different levels. Students are expected to be able to understand the texts by listening and reading as well as present their thoughts in speech, writing, and typing.
