When a license-plate reader picked up on a stolen tag, Broward sheriff’s deputies moved in for a traffic stop.

But the case erupted in gunfire on State Road A1A in Pompano Beach on Saturday, a Broward Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said.

BSO said its initial investigation shows that when deputies attempted to pull the vehicle over on A1A north of Atlantic Boulevard, the driver didn’t stop. Instead, occupants of the car “fired multiple times on deputies.” The deputies returned fire, spokeswoman Miranda Grossman said.

When the driver zoomed off toward Deerfield Beach to the north, deputies pursued the car and arrested the suspects in front of 71 SE 21st St.

Two of the suspects had out-of-state warrants for felony possession of a firearm, Grossman said.

One suspect was injured, but it was unclear whether the injury was from gunfire. Grossman said the person’s injuries were not life-threatening.

The shooting happened around 2 in the afternoon.

Pompano Beach Mayor Rex Hardin said deputies were initially alerted to the car by one of the city’s license plate readers.
