Welcome to the Great SNES RPG Challenge
2
3
The Great SNES RPG Challenge is a streaming challenge where I will conquer every localized and fan-translated JRPG. This will be a challenge I will do on and off throughout my streaming life to beat all the SNES RPGs.

Feel free to read the rules and frequently asked questions below and look at the tabs on the bottom to navigate around the sheet

Challenge Rules:
6
1) The games on this challenge run will be SNES RPGs including turn-based, action, strategy, rouge-likes and such.
7
8
2) English fan translations are included in the list.
9
10
3) Western only or western-styled games like Wizardry and Ultima are included. Though My name is MisterJRPG, let's take on the
extra challenge of playing every English RPG in one platform (and SNES mostly have JRPGs anyways)
11
12
4) Games that have very little or maybe no RPG elements, but are marketed and tagged as RPGs are in the list. This includes sim-type games and some Zelda clones.

Update: It used to be a case-by-case basis, but decided to add all games with an RPG label by the market or considered an RPG by several websites and databases, even if it turns out to not actually be an RPG.
13
14
5) Games that was originally from another platform, but gets ported or remade on the SNES are included (aka the Dragon Quest rule)
15
16
6) Not all games will be the SNES version per say. That includes if game got officially localized on another platform and/or if there's an enhanced port of an SNES game with additional content, but fundamentally the same game.

Examples: Official ports of Squaresoft/Square-Enix's many games including HD remasters with ignorable extras.
17
18
7) Enhanced ports and directors cut are ok as mentioned above, but no full fledged remakes, so no Trials of Mana Remake of Final Fantasy IV DS. And no versions of games if the core gameplay mechanics is fundamentally too different (So no Tactics Ogre PSP)
19
20
8) Even if a game is officially localized, I may still play the fan translated version if the game is not a good port and/or has a notorious localization (so no Tales of Phantasia GBA) or a lot more convenient (such as Front Mission SNES over the DS version)
21
22
9) While I usually try to figure out things on my own, I am also bound to be using guides and maps a lot in games to keep moving forward in the game. This is not a purist run. This is my experience of playing each game. Too many JRPGs to play in and outside the challenge.
23
24
9) I may be inconsistent about the rules (especially #9) or the rules may be subject to small changes, so forgive me.
25
26
10) On rare instances, I might be a dirty, stinkin' cheater, such as save states or rewinds, depending on game going ons.

Example:
There may be a 3 hour long difficult dungeon and no saves and I died near the end. I'll try to get through it legitamately since it is part of the original experience... but if I keep losing hours of progress, I'll save state to not continue wasting too much time.

Example 2: I am dumb and forgot to save after a very lengthy, slow story sequence... quick rewind.

Best not to interpret my game completion times as how long the game is, but how long I take with each one through combinations of doing things blind, looking stuff up and misc. situations.

FAQ:
31
Why SNES RPGs?
32
It is the platform that started my gaming memories and my JRPG fandom. I also wanted to play all SNES RPGs before, but got sidetracked and lost the mood partway.
33
34
Why you don't do this challenge all the time?
35
I enjoy JRPGs in other platforms and do want to play new releases that interest me, especially anything Falcom. And it can lead to a burnout if I play nothing but SNES RPGs. This is first and foremost, an enjoyable, self-proposed challenge run I do at my leisure and when the mood strikes. That be subject to change depending on circumstances.
36
37
Why is x game not in the list?
38
If the game is fan-translated and not on the list, I may have forgotten to add it. If it is RPG enough (or labeled RPG), please let me know.
39
40
How is the next game picked?
41
After my initial picks (and some friends that picked out a game), there will be a wheel spun (aka the wheel of destiny) to pick out the next game. For a whopping 150,000 channel points though, you can rig the wheel to select your own pick.

There are also occasional raffle picks after several random random picks. Note that up to 3 games are shown in advance to see whats upcoming and the raffle picked game may not happen for a while, depending on streaming going ons.

Update: Every 10 games starting with #51, I wil pick out a gaem from the list.
42
43
Why you don't play the SNES version of all games?
44
I prefer trying to support the localized versions when I can unless I think is really bad or rough. There is a chunk of games that never came out originally in the SNES, but got ported later. And some games may have extra stuff, but they're more like bonuses and wouldn't really change how the game is told, plays, looks or or overall sounds. In the end, a port or a directors cut is still originally an SNES game.

There is bound to be inconsistencies and if there is a backlash about not playing the SNES version at all even if it is a straight port with a different translation, we'll cross that bridge when we get there. The challenge still keeps evolving and changing.
