Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, April 16

In a vote that ended April 16, Cincinnati.com readers selected winners for the Cincinnati Enquirer Athlete of the Week, presented by Mercy Health, for the April 5-11 voting period.

Winners will receive a certificate sent through the school's athletic department. They are sent one month at a time.

You do not have to be a subscriber to vote, a period that lasts Monday evenings to 5 p.m. each Friday during the season. Please submit any nominees by Sunday evening for the previous week's performances to mlaughman@enquirer.com.

This week's winners are:

Ohio boys team: Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy baseball – The Eagles responded to their first loss of the year by beating Cincinnati Country Day 6-0 in the revenge game and New Richmond 17-3 on April 9.

Ohio girls team: Mason lacrosse – The team went 3-0 last week scoring a total of 61 goals on offense with 13 different players contributing at least one goal.  On the other end of the field, the defense allowed only 33 shots on goal with goaltending making 22 saves or 66.6% save ratio.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys team: Covington Catholic baseball – The Colonels went 4-0 last week and are 7-0 overall, scoring 11 runs or more in each game.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls team: Dixie Heights track – The girls took first place in the Kenton County championship meet last week earning 235 points, with 14 first-place medals.

Ohio baseball, big school: Jonathan Baker, Milford – He had six hits on the week, including two doubles and a triple, 3 runs scored and 4 RBI at the play. On the mound, he threw 7 innings in two appearances, recording nine strikeouts and allowing only two runs.

Ohio baseball, small school: Ty Yelton, Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy – The junior went 2-for-4 with 4 runs scored and 3 RBI in the 17-3 win over New Richmond April 9.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana baseball: Josh Napier, Campbell County – The senior hit home runs in wins against Boone County and Holy Cross, and in the Holy Cross game he scored four runs and drove in four.

Ohio softball, big school: Sam Pennington, Mason – The sophomore collected four hits and knocked in a pair in Mason’s 13-1 win over Lakota East.

Ohio softball, small school: Savannah Smith, Reading – The sophomore left-handed came off a back injury to start as a pitcher for Reading and being limited to only 80 pitches per game. Last week, she had 5 home runs (one was a grand slam) 5 singles and 19 RBI for a batting average of .625 in five games. She was intentionally walked twice for a total of 4 walks and had zero strikeouts. On the mound, she has a 3-1 record in 22 innings with 10 hits, 13 runs allowed, 5 earned runs, 9 walks and 53 strikeouts.  In the April 7 game against Wyoming, she had 3 homeruns, one of which was the grand slam and hit in 9 RBI.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana softball: Jessie Kincer, East Central – She went 3-for-3 with 2 runs scored, 3 doubles, 1 stolen base and an RBI in the 6-4 win over Connersville April 6.

Boys lacrosse: Riley Platter, Kings – The freshman had four goals and two assists in Kings’ 13-7 win over Summit.

Girls lacrosse: Sara Grove, Mason – The senior is leading the Greater Miami Conference in total saves (39) and interceptions (4), and leads the state of Ohio in Division I with a 0.672% save average. She held Sycamore to 1 goal in the second half for a 19-4 win, and held Mt Notre Dame scoreless in the first half, for a 22 - 1 victory.  She’s led Mason to a perfect 5-0 record and a No. 2 ranking in the state.

NKY boys swimmer/diver: Aiden Stigall, St. Henry – He was the Super Region Champion in diving and will advance to the state tournament.

NKY girls swimmer/diver: Lainy Kruger, Notre Dame Academy – She was named the Female Athlete of the Meet at the Region 7 swimming and diving meet, in addition to making the all-region team.

Tennis, singles: Avi Mahajan, Seven Hills – He won his first singles match against Anderson to lead Seven Hills over Anderson as a team April 10. He also won his match over Loveland in a 4-1 team win April 7.

Tennis, doubles: Kevin Dong-Arjun Rajagopala, Sycamore – The doubles team is 4-0 after beating Toledo St. John’s April 10 in a 4-1 team win.

Northern Kentucky boys track: Elliott Warner, Campbell County – The junior won three events, including the 100 and 200 in a meet against Brossart and Highlands April 9.

Northern Kentucky girls track: Lacey Klare, Scott – The freshman won the 200-meter dash at the Kenton County Championships with a time of 29.17.

Ohio boys track: Riley Payne, Edgewood – The junior hurdler led the Edgewood Cougars to the team title at the Oakwood Invitational April 6. He won the 110 High Hurdles and 300 Intermediate Hurdles and was a member of the runner-up 1,600-meter relay team.

Ohio girls track: Chloe Meyer, Edgewood – The junior sprinter broke two school records, and two meet records 100m dash (12.80) + 200m dash (26.53); set a new meet record in the 200m dash (26.53) at the Oakwood Invitational.

Water polo: Will Morstadt, St. Xavier – The senior captain led the team to a win April 6 over Mason with 4 goals, 80 percent shot percentage, 5 assists and 6 steals.

Boys volleyball: Brendon Buis, Fairfield – In three games, Buis had 56 assists, including 28 at Loveland on April 7 where he also had 13 digs.
