I assume the wobbie mechs have some sort of self-destruct built in to prevent, say, the Davion techs having a field day with that headcapped giant spider robot?

The armor fails after the stress of one battle and aside from the computer systems there's nothing particularly unusual about anything else they're carrying. A self-destruct looks very suspicious, some dead Mechwarriors and Clantech not so much.

Giant Spider Invasion 9

“Looks like they’re not content to let me take potshots at them so I can play the hero for the holovids later,” Ian smiled wryly as an enemy Gauss Rifle round glanced off the BattleMaster’s armored prow. The silvery streak vanished upwards, its pace and trajectory stalling almost immediately, but the watermelon-sized projectile had done its job, flaking away ablative sheets of the BattleMaster’s mirrored armor. If the sheer shininess of laser reflective armor wasn’t so visually compelling, Ian would’ve preferred something more impact or artillery resistant.

“Get us moving, Malcom,” he called back, but his pilot was already bringing the BattleMaster up to speed. It may have behooved him to give his bodyguards some direct orders, but they were handling themselves well enough. That an enemy had come to take his life hardly phased him: that was part of the job, after a fashion; but that didn’t mean Ian was obliged to make things easy for them. If someone wanted him dead, they’d have to commit to it, and with so many of his forces at their backs they’d be cut down wholesale as long as he managed to hold out.

“Circle around, and keep your distance.” He advised calmly. It might have been easier to withdraw, but with so many civilian eyes on him running from the battle would be far worse press than lingering. Ian hated that thought the instant it popped into his head, but his father had taught him to be mindful of political concerns. He was the First Prince of the Federated Suns first, and a Mechwarrior—perhaps not dead last, but somewhere around 80th.

“Keep us in cover,” He advised, “and don’t worry about getting me good shots. The safer we are, the more freely Conner and the others can work. We’ll assist where and if we can.”

“Aye, sir.” Malcom’s reply was calm. That was another point in his favor, even the best soldiers could crack under fire and to Ian’s knowledge Malcom had only seen battle against pirates. Dangerous as they could be, pirates were a far cry from trained and competent opponents. If Malcom had been the bloodthirsty sort an order to keep out of the fighting might have been unbearable for him. Ian smiled. Conner knew a cold-blooded, methodical thinker would be more to Ian’s liking than any of the battle maniacs he’d trained with at the Sun Zhang academy. Passion was a useful weapon in small doses, but Ian had never found the warrior’s spirit to be particularly beneficial.

Primary Objectives
- Kill Prince Ian Yorinaga Kurita-Davion (0/1)
- Die a Glorious Death (1/5)

Secondary Objectives
- Protect the Cobalt Tarantula (failed!)
- Protect Disruption Pylons (succeeded!)

Special Rules
SPA: Die Hard A unit with Die Hard is immune to guts rolls and never tests for forced withdrawal. Units with ‘Die Hard’ that withdraw or are otherwise forced off the map are captured by the enemy.

SPA: Blood Stalker A unit with Blood Stalker may chose a target at the start of a turn. Receive a -1 bonus ToHit that target, and a +1 penalty to hit all other targets until the selected target is defeated.

SPA: Demoralizer Instead of making a weapon attack, a Demoralizer may make an opposed test (Piloting vs. Guts) against one unit within 10 hexes. If the target fails the test, it enters forced withdrawal.

SPA: Cluster Hitter +1 to cluster table rolls. A unit with cluster hitter may remain stationary to make an aimed attack with cluster table weapons. If the attack is successful all shots from the cluster attack strike the same location

SPA: Hot Dog -1 bonus to avoid automatic shutdown due to heat

SPA: Dodge +1 evasion bonus vs. melee attacks

SPA: Tactical Genius Swift advice grants 1 allied unit ACE status as long as this unit is on the field and capable of communication.

SPA: Antagonizer Instead of making a weapon attack, an Antagonizer may make an opposed test (Piloting vs. Guts) against one unit within 10 hexes. If the target fails the test, it engages the Antagonizer instead of its declared target.

SPA: Sandblaster A unit with Sandblaster gains a +2 bonus to the cluster hit roll

SPA: Serene Grace A unit with Serene Grace moves so precisely it expands its firing arc by one increment. It can fire front weapons into the arm arcs, and arm weapons into the rear arcs before taking a torso-twist into account.

SPA: Melee Specialist A melee specialist receives a -1 bonus to hit in Melee

SPA: Forward Observer A forward observer may spot for indirect fire and attack a target in the same turn with no penalty

Tactical Network Computer The TacNet Computer is a targeting computer than gains abilities the more units there are attached to the network. At 1-2 functioning units, a TacNet Computer provides no benefit. At 3-4 functioning units, a TacNet Computer functions as a basic targeting computer. At 5-6 functioning units, a TacNet Computer functions as an advanced targeting computer. Additionally, networked units receive a non-stacking -1 Crossfire bonus to hit any unit another member of their network has already attacked.

Shattered Armor Undamaged sections of shattered armor resist all damage types. Damaged shattered armor functions as laser reflective armor, resisting energy damage.

Unstable Armor Undamaged sections of unstable armor resist all damage types. Damaged unstable armor functions as kinetic resistant armor, resisting kinetic damage.

Explosive Armor Undamaged sections of explosive armor resist all damage types. Damaged unstable armor functions as ablative-reactive armor, resisting explosive damage.

Molten Armor Undamaged sections of molten armor resist all damage types. Molten armor regenerates damage as the carrying ‘Mech’s heat rises. At 6 points of heat, a ‘Mech with molten armor regains 1d6 armor in a random damaged location. At 16 heat, a ‘Mech with molten armor regains 1d6 armor in all damaged locations. At 26 heat, a ‘Mech with molten armor regains 6 armor in all damaged locations. A ‘Mech with molten armor does not gain bonus heat dissipation and cannot fully restore damaged armor, but has a chance to regain 1 point of armor even if all the armor on a section is depleted.

ECM Mode: Reinforcements Disruption As long as the Cobalt Tarantula remains within 6 hexes of an undamaged Disruption Pylon, enemy reinforcements are prevented from entering the map.

I think it has more to do with the number of enemies vs players, with turn based games, the side that has the most turns tends to come out ahead because the odds of rolling high is statically in favor for that side even when handicapped; pretty sure it's called action economy. You had them out gunned and outnumbered right out of the gate, but the all the reinforcements pushed everything disproportionately to one side.

This round's machines were especially tough which gives more chances for freak accidents. Our lab grown hamburger experiment took a number of head hits and 2 falls to get that way, not just an freak explosion from what was otherwise a zombie.

Really though, the reinforcement was not a factor- they mostly haven't even fired until this turn. I think 80% of the fast fold is just dice headshots, and those tanks being giant brick shithouses of armor that we couldn't blast past with the Cobalt Tarantula's slow movent. The other portion I think is mismatched speeds on our parts- it's one thing if we're all 5/8/5 with masc heavies, but a mixed speed Lance is way more vulnerable to getting separated and being unable to concentrate fire.

(To be clear I'm not giving ptn a hard time about this, I think the scenario is awesome. I'm just sorta sad a rad as gently caress mech like the Bearcat only really got 3-4 turns of action to show off before going down pretty ignominiously.)

That is a good point. Even with the caps on how much armor they can regenerate the molten armor 'Mechs can still soak an incredible amount of damage.

Mind, I might feel differently if I didn't also feel like I haven't done a great job pulling my weight real well in this mission but c'est la guerre.

Anyways I'm in full-on "gently caress it I'mma at least get a kill on that goddamn Argus before I die so I'm taking someone to Wobbie Hell with me" mode

It doesn't bother me in this case at least because I get it that we're not our characters, and i think ptn has consciously not done a bunch of pov writing from our pilots, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't just a bit disappointed with our dice luck.

If we were playing some of the other characters that have been really well written and turned in to thread favorites I'd definitely feel differently.

I have no strong feelings about this plot inasfar as it should succeed or fail. That said, with no hard feelings, it's really refreshing to see Goonlance not just trample all over the hapless OpFor for 15 turns like it feels like the last few games have been.

Oh absolutely. The dice have not been kind, and that ain't in anyone's control. I'm just saying there's definitely a part of me thinking "quit cheering when I fail, you assholes!" Heh.

But I can take solace in the fact that Carlos Marik is still alive and still awesome and we helped make that happen so that takes out a lot of sting. :D

I always want to see the players win. Largely because I think it gives PTN an excuse to deviate even more wildly from the really bad canon timeline. I don't know enough about the actual universe to have carryover stuff like "ugh wobbies/clanners bad" or whatever, I just like Clandads doing a pickup game against the neighbors.

Basically I assume that anything PTN has presented as a mission is an option to really push stuff further from the norm and I like that.

I, for one, am rooting for GoonLevelII. I used to run the Wobbie faction on Legends when the clans weren’t available, and retain a soft spot for the mad nuke-happy bastards with the cool cyborgs and advanced interfaces. It’s okay to be the villain, both of my opportunities in the old thread were against the Clans, and I wish you every success in your objectives. We, the thread, elected this mission. If we wanted an Archon or Coordinator dead we had our chance, but we chose the First Prince. Wipe him off the face of New Avalon.

I am a mouth, and I must scream

OTOH the players have won the overwhelming majority of missions across both threads (in fact I only remember one that the opfor won outright: the second mission of the first thread. Maybe a couple more that were only partial victories where the players held the field but failed a primary objective.) Having the players at serious risk of failure adds some tension that I feel has been largely missing from the narrative. I’m not so much rooting for these players in particular to lose after waiting two years for a go (although PTN’s fantastic writing has made me quite sympathetic towards the Prince) as just wanting players (in general) to lose occasionally.

I think you mean the third here: the second was the Caballeros versus the Death Commandos, and while the Colonel’s wife didn’t get out of that one, it counted as a victory because they won the field. The third was one the one where the Clans first showed, and Steiner Rules dueling was invented (and led us on the wild ride we’ve had so far with Bondsman Caesar and Task Force Serpent in Kerenskye).

I can also think of the first time REDACTED showed up against C* on the surface of the Dropship, and that vehicle only salvage mission PTN tried at the end of the last thread, which didn’t really go anywhere as ones that Goons outright lost.

Personally, I am pro-goonlevel because I want the enormous chaos and consequences to be even more so.

Just plink the prince in the face with one of those gauss rifles and go homeget turned into hamburger to preserve C* OPSEC and interests, monarchy is overrated anyway.

We're not necessarily out of this yet, but the odds are very long, and I'm likely going down this turn or next, just from the sheer numbers of mechs that will be shooting at me. At 4/6 and with AC20's you're likely to be cut down before you get to within useful range of the battlemaster.

Especially with Narsham being Antagonised (unlucky) and knocked out (unlucky twice) now in the backline, the sunspider was our best hope of hurting the Battlemaster by firing from up close and spotting for Sheep Dodger's LRMs while I drew fire by Looking Threatening With Gauss TM.

I'll be trying to find somewhere to stand where the battlemaster can't deny line of sight, and firing with gauss again this turn.

Oh I have wholly abandoned any hope of getting any attacks off on the Battlemaster, I did that around turn 4 when it became apparent that the mission target wasn't moving and I was slow as hell with short-ranged weaponry. My plan rapidly became "gently caress around in the backfield so that maybe, just maybe, some of the reinforcements have to take a turn or two paying attention to me and give the rest of you a chance to close ground." And I've gotta say, Molten Armor has done a lot to keep me up and moving at least two turns past I expected to be mission-killed.

Luckily our victory objective also includes "die like a badass" and I have faith we're all gonna accomplish that. :D

I'll be honest and say I was rooting against the goons more than I initially wanted to admit because we've been following some of the major characters in the PTNverse for literal years at this point and I'm a bit invested in them.

TheParadigm

I think that its about having a good time and making a good showing; and PTN is more than fair about drawing a line where if someone didn't get a chance to make a difference, they get another round. (like some early eliminations we've seen)

I know its different when you're in the driver's seat, but I almost feel like the goonlance showings have been (a little, forgivably) too on-point for the last few missions.

Its just a hint refreshing to see things not going smoothly, but i also think it was innately set up like a boss rush/arena where you've got to get the objective before you get swarmed, and it was a deliberately different styling, not overtuning enemies that contributed to a bad turn.

Personally, this is one where I'm hoping the defenders win, so that comstar can eat rude stuff and throw wrenches in their plans!

Edit:
at the same time, for heroes to shine, there need to be villians to struggle against. If the prince makes it, I'm already wondering what the speech is going to be like.

I had a feeling this was going to be the Sun Spider’s last round, but I did expect to take about three times as much fire in the process of getting dropped, not two shots and another head hit followed by a double pilot hit when the ammo went off. Firing uselessly on top of that thanks to the Antagonizer was just icing on the cake.

I do look forward to the day when I’m not playing a Blakist.

In retrospect, it was when the Opforce started destroying pylons and we ignored them that things started to go wrong, although given the terrible luck associated with the Tarantula it might not have made much difference in any case.

I invite someone with more time to do the math on the number of headshots against us vs headshots we landed on the Opforce.

That way lies madness. My thread debut was coming in as a sub and eating a CERPPC to the head: Headcaps happen, there is little edifying or comforting to be found in asking why 2 per cent chances come up when there were over forty potential enemy rolls for it this turn alone. Besides, one headcap with the right weapon on the Prince and everything swings massively back towards GoonLII.
