When you glue up miters for trim or molding, what adhesive do you use?
It seems to me that if you used a putty type glue you could put just a
little extra on the 45s so that it squeezed out enough to fill any gap
that may be present. Then you could sand off the excess when it dries
and not have to worry about puttying it. Anyone do this? Or do you
all have *perfect* miters every time?

cope the joints properly and you won't have to resort to putty. putty
will only fill in gaps for a shrink/expand cycle or two anyway, before
the gaps show. putty is a lousy way to cover up mistakes. even if you
think the end result looks good, come back in 2 years and see what a POS
job you did.

Sign of the times. As I've said a couple hundred times before ... Builders
_used_ to say:

"Oh don't worry it, the trim carpenter will take care of that gap".

Now they say:

"Oh, don't worry about that gap left by the trim carpenter, the painter will
take care of it".

try as you might, if you are going to stain the pieces there is no way that
it will look good with glue or anything else on the visible corner, so
tight miter is critical...if you're going to paint it then get it close and
caulk away (I lived in the UK a few years ago and almost puked with the OOHS
and AHHS over what the real estate people thought was expert finish
carpentry...1/8 gaps everywhere but caulk fills the gaps)...

Hmmph. If they *don't* make a putty type glue like I'm referring to,
they ought to.

Well Dave once again we agree on something! See its all good. Careful
though, there was a major discussion here not too long ago about coping
versus just miter cutting inside corners and I got alot of grief when I
exclaimed that coping was the only real way to go. Glad to see most here are
on the same page with this subject though!

Perfect miters. You can have perfect miters too as soon as you build a
miter sled. They work wonders.

It might. That stuff is seriously strong. In fact, I think I'll
bring a tube over to my sisters when I miter her crown molding with a
rusty hatchet.

Jay, why finesse it? That will just slow you down. Take up Karate and
just whack the crap out of the molding after measuring by walking off
the length with long strides. Much quicker!
