This book is well worth a look for the sheer originality and compassion the author shows in her writing and in her characters.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I felt drawn in and invited into a lovely story with emotional twists, supernatural wonder and family values. I love the way the author cleverly dips the characters in and out a past life. The story really flows. I found this an unusual plot and very good, especially the ending. The Other Place is a very special place.

About the author

It was following a serious road accident in the late 1980s that I decided as I could not return to work, I would write a book.
Having always had an interest in the Supernatural - I read the tarot cards for a while - the booklet was obviously always going to be about ghosts. When I was reading the cards many people told me ghost stories, so with their permission these were included. Local papers were always helpful in publishing my appeals for stories, and there was no shortage of people willing to share their ghostly tales.
My first ghost booklet Mystical Staffordshire, appeared in the early 1990s. I really only intended writing one, but as it was so popular I wrote another, then another. Numerous ghostly booklets later I combined them into Mysterious Happenings. I have also written other books, Birmingham Girls, Choosing Your Psychic Pathway, Ghosts Angels & Hauntings.
I decided to turn my hand to writing fiction in 2007, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience of writing Dancing with Spirits and Spirits of the Lights the sequel. Followed by The Other Place, and Jen's Story,Torn Between Two Times. All of my books apart from Birmingham Girls are full of mystical happenings.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 March 2015I really enjoyed this story. I know other reviewers have mentioned the lack of correct punctuation etc but I think you tend not to notice things like that if you enjoy what you're reading, and its just something they tend to pick up on to help justify their dislike of the book. You can tell very early on the story begins in the 50's and goes right through to the late 60's early 70's. It's a nice gentle read, so give it a go
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 March 2023Unusual story, which should have been better proof read but enjoyable.
Did want to finish it so was not abandoned.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 October 2013This isn't my usual type of read, but as I am interested in the idea of reincarnation and because the book was reasonably priced, I thought I'd try it.
What a pleasant surprise.
The author draws you in slowly and effectively, making you care what happens to the three main female characters in the present time, but you are also able to relate to the secondary characters in Chrissie's past life.
I loved the way Chrissie took the negative occurrences in her life and made them work in a positive way, giving her a determination to succeed, which she does superbly.
There are some sad, touching moments in this tale, but also an ending that leaves the reader very moved.
This book is well worth a look for the sheer originality and compassion the author shows in her writing and in her characters.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 September 2013This was an interesting idea for a story (reincarnation/time travel element), but the writing is abysmal. The storyline jumps around all over the place and the characters are very inconsistent, often changing attitude or motivation from one sentence to the next. This makes it very confusing and jarring to read.
Punctuation also seems to have been inserted by randomly throwing it at the page, resulting in full stops or commas where none should be, and entire paragraphs missing any punctuation whatsoever. I don't believe this has been proofread at all and honestly wonder how on earth it got published - I've seen better writing from children.
I resent spending 64p on this given that I am currently reading a free book that is a hundred times better written. Don't do it!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 September 2013This book is, in my opinion, badly written, with a lot of repetition, for example the author makes reference to the coverings on Chrissie's 3 piece suite twice in consecutive paragraphs, despite the fact that this information has no significance to the story. At the start I didn't have a clue in what period the book was set until there was a reference to Elvis Presley. until that point the book could have been set in any period after the Edwardian era. I found the characters two-dimensional and unconvincing. In particular I found it implausible that Chrissie could end up as a counsellor when the author is at pains to emphasise her inability to mix with other people. Having read the other reviews which rated the story line highly, I was expecting a well written and plausible story. However, I was very disappointed with this book, and I am afraid I would not recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 April 2012The Other Place is described as a paranormal mystery focusing on Chrissie, who has led a troubled life. She can't explain why she keeps seeing another world in another time, and she can't come to terms with her past and the part her step-father, Alf, has played in it. Her only friend is Amy, who isn't all she seems. In desperation Chrissie seeks guidance from a hypnotherapist, Kitty, who helps her to understand why she is so troubled by her dreams and what they mean.
However, The Other Place is much more than just Chrissie's story. It is also the story of her mum Lily and her sister Babs, both of whom are suffering in their own way. Babs has met and married Alan, who leaves her because she gets pregnant and he doesn't want children. Later Babs experiences a strange sensation that she's being watched...
Meanwhile, Lily has had a hard life. Her husband left her when the girls were very young, and when he sends his girlfriend to the house to offer to take the girls off her hands, that forces her to come to a decision; they must move away so he can't find them. This turns out to be a mixed blessing. Lily marries Alf to give her daughters security, but he has no time for Chrissie and Babs. He thinks Chrissie is mad, and although Lily is fiercely protective of her daughters, she doesn't understand why Chrissie has such bad nightmares, nor does she share her enthusiasm for hypnotists and card reading. Chrissie can't forgive her for not protecting her from the awful Alf. Babs doesn't like Alf, either, and both girls can't understand why Lily goes back to him after he left her.
After tragedy strikes, Chrissie is able to make sense of her past at last. The future is one of hope, but there is a twist at the end.
Although the paranormal is something I don't understand - like Lily I'm probably a bit too down to earth to believe in past lives! - I enjoyed this story very much. It has an element of a ghost story to it. It is simply written, and for 77p the Kindle edition is a good buy.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 August 2013I enjoyed this book very much. It is very easy to read, yet still portrays the complicated and interwoven relationships of a family who have experienced poverty, hurt and psychic phenomena. I would recommend it to anyone interested in spiritual phenomena, the after life, or, as in this tale, the before life. It is not taxing to read, and is a curl up with a chocolate bar book.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 September 2014I found the start of this book a little confusing but also intriguing. Certainly it was hard to put down as I needed to find out what happened. Thought the ending came too soon. I was left with wanting more.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disjointed
I love paranormal stories and after reading the 'Book Description' for 'The Other Place' I was excited to fire up my Kindle and jump straight in. Nothing but disappointment greeted me.
This book is poorly written. The story jumps forward in time so often it's as if the author got bored with her own story, aged her characters and tried again. Very predictable story line, unlikeable characters and far too disjointed to really get engrossed in their tale.

4.0 out of 5 stars The other place by Carol arnall
Really enjoyed this easy read. I found it comforting and at times thought provoking relating to all things we might call paranormal, which for me are very natural and real. Four stars from me.
