Commodity Supplemental Food & Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Programs

The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) provides FREE nutritious food and nutrition education to low-income D.C. residents: Women who are pregnant, up to 1-year postpartum; Children ages 1 through 5 years; and Seniors 60 years or older. The 2013 senior income eligibility for a family of one is $1,245 per month and $1, 681 for a family of two.  The Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) provides checks to CSFP seniors for the redemption of fresh fruits and vegetables.  The SFMNP has begun issuing checks to CSFP seniors that may be used through the end of November.

Apply for Medicaid and SNAP at DCOA

The D.C. Department of Human Services, Economic Security Administration is onsite at the Office on Aging headquarters to process Medicaid benefits and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (SNAP) benefits for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.  Appointments are available from Wednesday - Friday, 9 am - 3 pm.  Clients interested in scheduling an appointment should call 202-724-5626. 


Metro Rider Participation Survey

Metro is seeking public input regarding how and when riders would like to receive information about service changes, as the transit agency continues to enhance its two-way dialogue with customers.

Metro is asking riders to participate in a survey, available online at wmata.com/servicechangesurvey, to help determine which types of service changes necessitate public hearings.

Understanding Dysphagia or persons who have difficulty swallowing is the topic for the next D.C. Caregivers Online Chat at Noon scheduled for Tuesday, August 20.  Access the web chat from the DCOA website at dcoa.dc.gov

Legal Clinic for the Elderly

An attorney from Legal Counsel for the Elderly will provide individual consultations on a walk in basis at CARECEN, 1460 Columbia Road, NW.  If you are age 60 or older, reside in the District of Columbia and are low-income, you can receive free legal services related to:

  • Consumer issues
  • Identity theft
  • Housing
  • Wills and inheritances
  • Public benefits
  • Social Security

Senior Fun Camp

Senior Fun Camp 2013

Reserve your spot today for Senior Fun Camp! The Department of Parks and Recreation will host the 2013 Senior Fun Camp August 26-30 at Camp Riverview in Scotland, MD.  Persons age 55 and older are invited to getaway and have fun during this annual 4-day, overnight event.  Activities will include spiritual meditation, exercise and fitness warm-ups, jewelry making, arts and crafts, fiber art, hand dancing, line dancing, bingo and much more!

The fee is $65 per person for DC residents and $75 per person for non-DC residents.  Checks or money orders should be made out to the DC Treasurer. For more  information, call Jennifer Hamilton at 202-664-7153.


Award Winning Documentary Screening

SAGE Metro DC and Mary's House for Older Adults, Inc. are hosting a free film screening at The Residences at Thomas Circle, 1330 Massachusetts Avenue, NW on Monday, August 26 at 6:30 pm. The award winning documentary Gen Silent is a film about the journeys of six Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual and Transgender (LGBT) seniors who are trying to navigate the mainstream system.  Refreshments will also be served.
