LaserJet III D paper tray problem

and, after working with them for a while, I got them to print. The
toner still seems fine, since the print quality is excellent. However,
the only way I can get it to print is if I use the manual feed part of
the tray (which only lets me print one sheet at a time). It came with
a couple of paper trays, but no matter which one I try, it won't feed
the paper through and gives me the error message " LC Tray Empty",
even though there is plenty of paper in the tray. I've tried playing
around with the tray (pushing and pulling it) but to no avail. The
strange thing is that this happens with both LaserJet III D printers,
I get the same error when I put in the tray (and I've tried a couple
of different paper trays).
I tried the trays in an old LaserJet II, so I know they work OK..so it
has to be something to do with the LaserJetIII D printer.
I talked to a local repair shop, and they said it sounds like the tray
sensors may be bad. If anyone out there has had similar problems with
their LaserJet printer and fixed it, if you could help me out, I would
really appreciate it!

More than likely, the paper pickup roller isn't working to account for
the paper only goes through when put in the manual slot... at least that
has been some of my experience.

parts. The HP II and HP III (D or no D) all use the Canon SX engine,
and that is one way to locate the assembly diagrams.
Well, it could be that the paper tray sensors are defective, but I try
to do one problem at a time. Sometimes, getting the lower paper paths
to work is hard. Have you made sure that the paper can easily slide
through the entire paper paths with no jamming?
You may need diagrams to figure out the paper paths.

You will have to take off the covers and use a vacumm or compressed air to
get out all the dust and stuff out of the sensors. There are IR
doide/sensor pairs. The top tray paper sensors are the same as an HPII or
HPIII mounted to the side of the DC power supply. The bottom tray sensors
are harder to get to. Blow out the sensor with air and if the dust is
blocking the IR that will fix the problem, using a VOM you can measure the
sensor output, Blocked with the scensor flag it will read 4-5 volts,
unblocked should read less than one half volt (.2-.3volt) all reading DC.
