The Science of Streetscapes & Wellness

The Science of Streetscapes & Wellness

Tis the season for lots of emotions and feelings surrounding holidays and a pending new year. There is no doubt that the last few years have been stressful and overwhelming for many of us. With the global pandemic, climbing prices, and a return to the hurried pre-covid pace, we find ourselves seeking refuge and better self-care habits. Outdoor activities like walking or biking have offered us a break from screens and a rapidly moving world with opportunities to explore our beautiful communities.

What we seek is indeed confirmed but a bit of science - studies have shown that access to nature, such as parks and landscaped spaces can reduce stress and depression while helping residents and visitors recover from mental fatigue. Now more than ever, urbanists and developers seek to create streetscapes that improve individual experiences and enhance cultural views of public spaces. Scientific studies have shown that our mental and physical health is linked to the connections made with our communal spaces. Some of the top ways in which streetscapes and greenspaces can improve mental health are:

Promoting a sense of belonging. Studies have shown that isolation can have a grave effect on mental health, leading to depression and loneliness. Well-crafted and thought-out streetscapes can offer residents and visitors a higher sense of togetherness by providing shared spaces for recreational activities. Streetscapes that embrace the cultural aspects of their citizens can also help to develop a sense of community and a feeling of belonging.

Reducing stress-related disorders. Greenery and flowers among streetscapes can be soothing. Walks, strolls, or biking down landscaped sidewalks and paths not only provide physical activity, but a pleasing visual environment. Overtime studies have shown that natural aesthetics among streetscapes can help increase feelings of happiness and reduce a person’s stress level. This reduction in stress can help to negate the likelihood of depression and anxiety.

Improving our driving experience. As with any Urban spaces, traffic is inevitable, but research has shown the importance of streetscapes to improve the driving experience and reduce the risk of accidents and road rage incidents. Well placed signs, aesthetically pleasing medians, and well-lit roadways can help residents and visitors reduce stress while commuting.

There are countless more mental health benefits surrounding streetscapes. Beautifully designed streetscapes that incorporate greenery, community-inspired designs, and enhance safety help provide residents and visitors with a higher mental health success environment and better options for managing life’s multitude of stressors.
