About the MTX Amplified ThunderForms

Ken Nail
Crinkled french fries, discarded receipts, old gum wrappers — you probably have everything in the hidden corners of your vehicle except great bass. ThunderForm enclosures fill the nooks and crannies of your vehicle with low tones that stand out, but their factory look blends right in.

Crinkled french fries, discarded receipts, old gum wrappers — you probably have everything in the hidden corners of your vehicle except great bass. ThunderForm enclosures fill the nooks and crannies of your vehicle with low tones that stand out, but their factory look blends right in.

MTX engineers evaluate the "sonic signatures" of top-selling vehicles so they can design ThunderForms as custom acoustic matches. Each ThunderForm fits and blends inconspicuously into your vehicle, so you get great bass without losing any space. They're made of high-density polyethylene resin to curb resonances — they deliver bass that's tight, hard-hitting, and way down low. The airtight enclosure provides the correct internal volume to yield optimum bass response.

This molded MTX ThunderForm comes loaded with a premium-quality 12" Thunder4500 subwoofer modified especially for amplified Thunderforms, with a specially-designed amp that puts out 200 watts of power. It installs in your 2005-up Ford Mustang in the passenger side of the trunk. The enclosure is seamless and airtight, with the correct internal volume to yield optimum bass response from the subwoofers. Hardware is included.

Features
Controls and Inputs

Features

Class D Amplifier: The enclosure contains a built-in 200-watt Class D (digital) amplifier that allows RCA or speaker-level input. The amplifier is highly efficient and designed specifically for use with the subwoofer in the enclosure.

Built-in Low-pass Filter: The low-pass filter frequency can be varied from 50 to 150 Hz for a seamless transition between the outputs of this unit and the other speakers in the vehicle.

Smart Engage Auto Turn-On: When the speaker level inputs are used, the amplifier's Smart Engage circuitry will automatically turn the amp on and off with the radio.

Note: The auto turn-on feature does not operate when the preamp level inputs are used. You must connect the remote turn-on lead.

External Bass Control: The External Bass Control (EBC) allows you to adjust the bass level from anywhere in the vehicle. You can mount the EBC knob under the dash to give you easy access to the bass control.

Amplifier Wiring: The ThunderForm includes a wiring harness which includes a 20' 10-gauge power wire, a 3' 10-gauge ground wire, and a 3' turn-on lead. One end of the harness has a 3-pin Molex connector, which plugs directly into the amplifier.

Thunder4500 Woofer: This enclosure comes loaded with a special 12" low impedance version of the Thunder4500. This proprietary 0.35 ohm woofer has a long excursion voice coil, and is specifically designed for the amplified ThunderForms.

Note: Because the woofer has an unusual impedance, specifically designed with the amp, it cannot be replaced with a standard MTX model.

Carbon-filled Polypropylene Cone: The woofer cone is made of carbon-filled polypropylene. Carbon adds strength and heat resistance to polypropylene; the result is reduced distortion and improved reliability. In addition, the cone is also very resistant to environmental extremes. The woofer uses a polyether foam surround.

Asymmetrical Linear Drive System (ALDS): The Asymmetrical Linear Drive System consists of a flat, progressive spider that improves suspension and an extended vented pole piece that smoothes out the cone's linear motion. The result is high output and low distortion.

Spider Plateau Venting: Heat from the voice coil is vented through metal-mesh covered vents that surround the back of the spider.

Voice Coil: The voice coil is wound on a high-temperature former to promote high power handling.

Strontium Ferrite Magnet: The strontium ferrite magnet yields a highly efficient speaker.

Molded Enclosure: The molded, high-density polyethylene resin enclosure resists flexing and dampens resonance.

Controls and Inputs

Controls:

  • Gain Control: rotary control that allows you to set the gain of the amplifier
  • Crossover Control: rotary control that allows you to adjust the crossover from 50 to 150 Hz

Inputs:

  • Input: left and right RCA jacks; these jacks allow speaker-level input when the supplied RCA high-level input wires are connected
  • EBC: 3.5mm mini-jack for use with supplied external bass control
  • Harness: 3-pin Molex jack for use with supplied wiring harness
  • Fuse: installed 20A ATC fuse
