Brothers of Fire #5

Phoenix Found

Rate this book
He wants to spread his wings...but can he trust them when he's never been allowed to fly?

Perrin Shade’s family has worked for the phoenix shifters for hundreds of years. It was always assumed he would do the same. But as his thirtieth birthday approaches, the restlessness he’s kept hidden grows. He only knows Mont de Leucoy. He’s never had a chance to explore the world. But there is a reason his family sought sanctuary in the kingdom…

He is the kind of paranormal being that many would like to forget exists. The kinds that even paranormals hunted.

A ghoul.

Oliver has spent the last ten years being told that he is a danger to others. That the Coven would hunt and kill him if they found him and that his parents abandoned him. Now, he is being told that is all a lie.

He is a phoenix shifter and his brothers have been searching for him. They claim to know him, but how can they when he doesn’t know himself?

They have their history, their duties, and their expectations. He should be embracing all of this, but instead, all he wants to do is leave before the weight of the past crushes him. The only person who treats him as if he isn’t broken is the castle handyman, Perrin.

Can a man who is really a monster help the man who is convinced he is a monster learn how to live and love?

This is the last book in the Brothers of Fire series.

Phoenix Found is the 5th and final book in the Brothers of Fire series. This series is best read in order so why not enjoy the rest of the series. This is the story of Oliver a Phoenix shifter and Perrin a ghoul. I loved watching these two so much as they work through all the issues they have. I loved their chemistry. It was great seeing the other brothers and their mates again also. I loved the action in the story. I'm looking forward to whatever TJ Nichols writes next. I would definitely recommend this book and series.

Phoenix Found is the fifth and final book in the Brothers of Fire series, which focuses on Oliver – previously known in the series as Olier. Having been missing for centuries, the Oliver they've found isn't quite the Olier they expected, and while Everest is devastated and reeling from the events of Oliver's rescue, everyone else tries to be okay with the new version of the brother they'd lost.

Oliver, meanwhile, is struggling in a world he doesn't understand. He had a good life before being rescued; lonely, but he was well cared for, and whenever he felt overwhelmed by the magic beneath his skin, a witch would come to give him some relief, in a way that means he doesn't think of his past as painful or abusive. In fact, he'd rather return to the simpler world of captivity than face what's ahead. But, he tries to do what he can to assimilate into his new life, learning French without butchering the language and easing into the life that is supposedly his.
On the flip side, Perrin is something the paranormal world have almost forgotten existed: a ghoul. As a ghoul, it's usually his job to scavenge the dead and clean up the Coven's messes, but his family work in the castle and there aren't many messes to clean up anymore. He works as a general handyman in the castle, hiding his nature and trying to avoid his family's attempts to matchmake him with another ghoul 'for the sake of their kind'. All while dealing with a homophobic family and other ghouls in general.

Individually, they're both a mess, but together Oliver and Perrin are adorable and the cutest couple. Perrin is experienced in the physical but not so much emotional connections, whereas Oliver is a blank slate about most things. When they come together, it's got a hint of teacher/student about it, as Perrin helps Oliver find who he is and what he enjoys, but it's really quite minimal. The secondary characters really step up to help Oliver learn about life and the world, and sex, so that it doesn't feel like Perrin is somehow manipulating or having power over that part of Oliver's learning, which I appreciated. It meant that they got to explore things together without it feeling preachy or like a lesson.

I loved the way that Nichols wrote ghouls. You don't often see a book with a ghoul in it, especially as a love interest. The lore behind them, the description of their physical appearance and overall nature, was really interesting and fed to us little by little throughout the book. I really liked the addition of the ghoul in the series, though it would be interesting to see more of them in one of the Familiar Mates series, since this series is now complete.

I don't normally like multi-character POV's but Nichols always does them so well, and only when they're needed. Here, we get an occasional chapter of POV from Dalmon, Kaine, Quentin and Everest, when it's deemed necessary to show us something outside the main plot.

While I'm sad to see the end of the series, it feels like the right thing for these brothers. They've tied up most of their storyline and history throughout the series and each brother has been featured. I do feel like a lot of phoenix lore has been left undiscovered – which is part of the reason it's a 4* and not a 5* rating – but with the next Familiar Mates series featuring a phoenix egg, I do feel like they'll make appearances throughout the connected series. The Shadow Board are (mostly?) dealt with, which was pretty much the overarching plot of this series, so it would feel right to end things here.

I'll also add that I thought the bonus epilogue really set up the transition from this series back to Familiar Mates pretty well. It gave an indication of what we'll see in the next book and how the two tie together.

Favourite Quote

“Oliver was a shooting star, drawing gasps of amazement, and he was the scavenger stuffing his face with carrion and drawing shrieks of fear.”

“Watching Oliver become more confident, like a butterfly emerging from a cocoon where it had slept too long, made his heart ache with joy and sadness. Because it wouldn’t be long before his beautiful phoenix took flight.”

The Phoenixes have been searching for their missing “brother” for 200 years. Phoenixes die and return to their eggs and are reborn again and again. They rule a small country tucked in close to France. Each Phoenix keeps a diary of their life that they can refer to when they are reborn. Oliver has been held captive and constantly killed and reborn to a Cabal of witches who drain his powers for their use. After being lied to for years, told that he was a dangerous fire witch who killed people when his powers overwhelmed him he is finally rescued and brought home to their castle. Oliver is lost, he does not know who or what to believe, he does not understand that he is a phoenix and does not know how to be one. He is afraid of everything and everybody. Until a late-night foray into the kitchen where he meets Perrin. Perrin, the castle maintenance man, looks pretty human but he is actually a ghoul. Perrin is just as miserable as Oliver. He is being pressured by his father to continue the ghoul traditional way of marrying at 30 and producing children to increase the ghoul population. But Perrin is very gay and has no interest in marrying a woman. Oliver has just figured out he also prefers men but has no idea how to take the next step. After a huge fight with his father who almost kills him, Perrin is encouraged to take Oliver to his estate in the country while things cool off. Oliver is not put off by Perrin’s ghoul form and thinks that Perrin is the best thing that ever happened to him. Perrin loves Oliver and will do anything to protect him. They do get their HEA and the series winds up. I have loved all five of these books. You could read this as a standalone but I would find it very confusing and disjointed if I did not have the backstory and know all the other players.

Phoenix Found is the last book in the Brothers of Fire series. It concerns phoenix Oliver and ghoul Perrin. Oliver was the missing phoenix rescued from the clutches of the Shadow Board by his brother Prince Everest in ‘Phoenix Prince’. His world has been turned upside down as everything he has been taught may be a lie and everyone he knew was using him for their own good. Now he has to find a place in the real world of humans, witches, shifters and other paranormal beings. The one person he can connect with is Perrin, a ghoul with problems of his own, who doesn’t treat him like he is about to break.

The story follows Oliver as he experiences more freedoms and choices than he had been allowed up to now by the Shadow Board but still feels like he is in a cage. It also follows Perrin as he has run-ins with his father and has to come to term with the real and imagined prejudices faced by ghouls and instilled in all ghouls. As Oliver and Perrin get closer in all senses of the word they are becoming vulnerable to attack from nearest and dearest.

This is a great finish to the series with some moments of high excitement and danger. Some of the previous characters take a front seat every now and again as they deal with the aftermath of the destruction of the Shadow Board and the pain they have caused. A lot of the story lines come to a pleasing end and another one comes to light which will be resolved in ‘The Thief’s Familiar’ when it comes out.

I had an advance reader copy and am reviewing it by choice.

The last book of the Brothers of Fire series brings the series to a satisfying closing. Oliver, the lost phoenix has been rescued from the witch cabal that has been draining, killing and watching him be reborn for two hundred years. Each reincarnation, he is told he's a dangerous fire witch and only draining his powers keeps the world safe. Finding out he's a phoenix and his brothers have searched for him each reincarnation, is mind blowing. He finds it hard to fit into life in Mont de Leucoy and it's only with his mate, Perrin, a ghoul, that he finds his home.
Their angst and sweetness, the steam they generate, have made this my favorite book of the series. Both men live in the cage that tradition has built. Ghoul culture is brutal for those that don't fit in and gay Perrin doesn't.
I had some trouble with the first Brothers' book as I'd gotten a little behind in Nichols' Fated Mates series. Which sets the backstory up for Brothers very nicely. I'd recommend that series first as it's all in the same world time. Which is a lot of reading. But totally worth it.
A good, quick read. A very satisfying conclusion.

Oliver has spent the past few years being told he is a danger to everyone. Now, he has been rescued and does not feel as if he is free. Maybe he has changed one form of captivity to another. Searching out food, he meets Perrin Shade. Perrin’s family has always worked in the castle and Perrin planned to do the same, but has been feeling restless. The two men form a friendship with maybe more. Past and present collide and neither is sure what comes next.

Oliver had so much to learn and unlearn. For many years, he only had romance novels to keep him company and he wants to explore. Now he has Perrin who can help him with his various needs. Perrin has his own issues. His father insists he marry and refusal could be fatal. It was amazing to watch these two come together. Each had some serious issues, but together, those issues were not insurmountable. Oliver was very accepting of what Perrin is while Perrin did not treat Oliver as if he was broken. Acceptance and love come next, but only if they survive.

This story was very enjoyable. There were some clues that may lead to future books. Who knows? What we do know is that more phoenixes would be welcome.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. This review is my honest opinion.

I love this series, and everything set in this world, and am collecting the paperbacks. The worldbuilding is fabulous, especially in regard to the phoenixes, and I loved the addition of ghouls in this story.

I loved how both Perrin and Oliver struggle with feeling like outsiders amongst their own, with Perrin not wanting to follow his family’s traditions and Oliver struggling to adjust to his new reality of being a phoenix shifter. Their relationship, which starts with Perrin showing Oliver where to find what he needs in the kitchen, when no one else thinks to, is sweet. I liked how, despite Oliver having no experience, Perrin always ensures what they do is at Oliver’s pace and comfort level.

I enjoyed seeing Oliver’s brothers again, and the snippets from their perspective, which I thought brought closure to their stories, although I hope to see get glimpses of them all in further Coven/Familiar Mates stories. I love their different personalities, and how they, and their mates, all fit together as family.

Perrin’s father is very tunnel-visioned, with his determination that Perrin falls into line, soon becoming dangerous. I loved how Oliver comes into his own, and also, finally, finds what he’s been seeking.

I’m going to miss this series.

Oliver is a phoenix shifter. Something he’s just learned after years of lies. He always thought he was being protected when in truth he was in chains, he just didn’t know it. Perrin is a ghoul and his family has worked for the Phoenix for a very long time. When Perrin and Oliver meet, the spark they feel is irresistible.

I thought the author did a very good job of showing how Oliver felt in the world he’d been thrust into. His trepidation and uncertainty were written with realism. I liked how Perrin’s compassion helped him but didn’t hinder his ability to begin to understand the strange new world he was exposed to. Their romance was integral to Oliver’s growth and was also spicy.

I don’t remember reading much about ghouls so I liked learning some of their lore. I always thought ghouls were creepy but Perrin wasn’t at all. His father on the other hand was all about the creep.

The other Phoenix brothers had important parts in this book. Mainly in helping Oliver acclimate to his new normal.

I enjoyed the book.

I enjoyed the phoenix lore and I found the ghoul lore downright fascinating. Poor Oliver has been freed from captivity, finds out he's a phoenix and needs to learn about the new world around him, all while realizing he likes a man and doesn't know what to do about it.  Then there's poor Perrin, a sweet ghoul whose ghoulish culture doesn't allow for being gay and deals violently with anyone unwilling to toe the line.  Oliver loves Perrin despite his ghoulish appearance, and Perrin helps Oliver adjust to his new reality without judgment and without mollycoddling him. They're great for each other and they have hot chemistry. I had a little trouble understanding the backstory, as this is the last book in the series but the first one I've read. Now I need to go back and read all the previous books, as I enjoyed the writing and the world building.

I was looking forward to this story in the series.

Oliver has been estranged and lied to for so long, now hes back with his "brothers" he should be able to be the phoenix hes supposed to. But he feels lost and unmoored. Hes not the dangerous fire witch he was told he was, and he has lots to learn about himself and the world hes been hidden away from.
Perrin feels trapped, hes a gay ghoul thats being forced into an arranged marriage, with a female ghoul, to stop the species dying out. But they havent been dying out for a long time. His family are pushing a tradition on him he doesnt want. He sees in Oliver the same feeling of overwhelment, and they become friends on first meeting. Oliver sees Perrin as a man and ghoul. Hes wants Perrin as a whole package, when Perrin thought hed have to settle for scraps in any type of relationship.

I loved seeing previous characters returning, the other Pheonixs and their mates.

This is the 5th book in the Brothers Of Fire series. All the brothers have been searching for Oliver and now is finally back home with his family. But he's confused after the capture, persecution and lies told to him by the Shadow Board. He has to discover the way back to sanity. His bodyguard Perrin is just that, but Perrin faces a dilemma of his own. Perrin is a ghoul, and he can't deny his true nature. The path these two take is a long and arduous one filled with reluctance from Oliver's brothers, the dyed-in-the-wool thinking of Perrin's ghoul family and ardent strife from the Shadow Board to recapture Oliver. This final book is a tremulous ending to an exciting series and was a pleasure for this reader to have all five books. This is my voluntary and honest opinion of this last book.

Phoenix Found: The Brothers of Fire Book Five by TJ Nichols is an exciting finale to the series. This book is about Oliver and his place in the palace and the world. The reader is introduced to a different type of paranormal, the ghoul, Perrin. I found ghouls fascinating and it added to my reading pleasure. For different reasons both Oliver and Perrin had constrained upbringings. Watching both grow significantly into autonomous beings was rewarding. It was nice to have vignettes with the other brothers woven into this tale. It is usually hard to say goodbye to a series' characters and that is certainly the case here. That is partly from my preference for dragons over wolves, and partly from the resolution of almost all the questions from each character’s story. I received a free advanced reader’s copy of the book, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

TJ Nichols ends series with love

There is not as many secrets in this fifth and final book in this TJ Nichols Phoenix series, mostly because the secrets have come to light in the other books. That is not to say that it’s not an interesting read. Oliver has been saved but now he needs to learn French and figure out what he wants to do in his life. This book may be less action packed (although there is some) than the other books, but there is more emotion as they all have mates, but need to figure out how to be brothers again. Oliver’s feelings are so well expressed in Nichols’ writing and I was surprised how much resonated with me. The back and forth between Oliver and Perrin is at times so cute and sweet and at other times so heartbreaking. A bit like most of our lives. Great ending to a great series.

Perrin and Oliver story concludes this series and is packed with danger, adrenaline, and fighting for finding a place to belong.
They both had their scars and hang-ups, as well as the feeling of inadequacy, of being left out, and of not belonging.
It was interesting the phoenix and ghoul pairing, the beliefs and traditions of both cultures, as well as how many hardships they had to get over with to be together.
I liked the little snippets into the life of the other brothers and their mates, as well as their roles in our characters happiness.
I liked their chemistry, the way they get used to each other, how beautifully they complete each other, and how they learn to accept to be happy and the better version of themselves.

What a good story to end this series on! Oliver and Perrin were both trying to find a way to be themselves comfortably. Perrin has been told to keep who he is undercover as he is a ghoul. Oliver, who turns out to be the missing Phoenix, also spent most of his life being told he was dangerous not being aware of who he is. They have both lived restrained but finding one another gives them a chance to start taking steps to come into their own with less constraint. It was so nice to see them not only find love and partnership with one another but also find more contentment as who they are. It was also nice getting to visit with Oliver's now found brothers in this story as well.

A Joyfully Jay review.

Phoenix Found is the fifth and final book in T.J. Nichols’ Brothers of Fire series. The books each feature different couples, but the storyline builds across the series and they should be read in order. This book does reveal some key things we learn along the way, so you should start with the first book, Phoenix Spy.

This is the fifth book in a series, and it’s a good idea, if you haven’t already, to start at the beginning to get the most of the overarching plot elements etc. Along with said plot elements, which deserve to be experienced on their own terms, this story focuses on Oliver (Phoenix shifter) and Perrin (ghoul). Both have plenty of obstacles to navigate and both find in each other someone who can see/appreciate them for who they are– a powerful connection to undergird some already powerful chemistry. Overall, there’s a lot to get caught up in here: well worth a read.

This was an intense story. Perrin, ghoul understands species tradition, but he's gay and doesn't want to marry a woman. Oliver, has spent the last 10 years deceived about who and what he is. He basically has to learn most of life all over again. These two men meet by accident, but feel comfortable with each other. Everyone wants something from and for them, contrary for what they want for themselves. TJ has done an amazing job bringing us through their challenges. I couldn't put this story down until I found their solutions. Fitting end to the series, but I still want more. Well done! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Oliver the phoenix and Perrin the ghoul are both on a pathway to self-discovery. Both are searching for their own truths in a world where they either do not understand what those truths are or where they disagree with them. In the process, they fall in love and must carve a path through disapproving family members and their own perceptions of what is acceptable and what isn't for them as individuals and as a couple. Perrin's patient tenderness toward Oliver and Oliver's open-hearted acceptance of the ghoul, and their mutual appreciation of each other as they are, not as others see them or want them to be make this a great story.

Finally found! In this 5th and final book of the series we finally get to see Oliver get his HEA. This wasn’t the pairing I expected to be honest but it ended up being a great one for me. Both of them were needed each others strength and love to truly heal and confidence. This probably wasn’t my favorite of the series but it ended things well and it was great to see them all together again and have that resolution of the main story. I really recommend reading this series in order to understand everything that happened over the course of the series.

Boo hoo 😩 Can't believe we are on the final book in this epic series. I have thoroughly enjoyed every book and will definitely be doing a back to back re read in a couple of months! This was another great addition as we follow Oliver and Perrin's journey. Their interactions and chemistry were just perfect. With a great relationship development between them as they overcome all the obstacles in their way. Was great to catch up with all the previous characters too!
Highly recommend

This is the fifth and final book in the Brothers of fire series and what a great conclusion it was. This is Oliver and Perrin’s story which tells us about Oliver’s struggles after his rescue and how him and Perrin connected and how Perrin helps him navigate his new reality, we also get to see all Oliver’s brothers and their partners in this story as each tries to help Oliver with his recovery. Great conclusion to the series.

I though this was a very interesting read, moving away from traditions, both as the characters move away from the traditions of their species in the book and also the moving away from the tradition beings of vampires and shifters that are usually portrayed in supernatural books. I liked that both characters moved away from just aesthetic lust, breaking free of the rules that bound them. In all it came to a very interesting plot line.

Neither Perrin nor Oliver have been told the truth about themselves and their family and they seem to be the only ones treating each other with honesty and respect. This is the story of how they search out the truth for themselves and fall in love in the process. Another great entry in this amazing series.

He wants to spread his wings but he has never been allowed to. His life will change when others arrive saying he had been hidden from them. He has only one person he feels he can trust. Life will become interesting as he may need to make huge decisions of where to go

**********Contains Spoilers**********

I really enjoyed this book and it was definitely my favourite of the series. I also thought that it was a good conclusion to the Brothers of Fires Series, which is set in the same universe of Familiar Mates Series but can be read standalone. I enjoyed Oliver and Perrin’s story. Man, Ghoul culture and tradition really needs to change. It’s so archaic. Yes, it’s okay if you’re straight or bisexual but completely wrong if you’re only attracted to the same sex and required to have at least 3 children.

The way Ghouls deal with going against tradition is even worse, so I don’t blame others for toeing the line as there’s not much of a choice. My heart hurt for Oliver and everything he endured and then not knowing what to do with himself or who he actually is after it was taken away from him when he was rescued, even though it was literally his prison it was all he knew. I thought that Oliver and Perrin were great together and I thought their chemistry was off the charts.

It would’ve been cool to see Oliver read about his past lives but I understand why he didn’t. I would happily read the Phoenix Journals of their past lives as it would be so bloody interesting but also possibly heartbreaking. I’m sad that this is the last we’ve heard from this series, but not this universe and I’ve already pre-ordered the next Familiar Mates Series book, The Thief’s Familiar and I’m looking forward reading it when it’s released in June next year. I’d recommend this books, series, universe and author to others.
