WELCOME TO JAMES SPRUNT COMMUNITY COLLEGE

We would like to thank you for choosing James Sprunt Community College (JSCC) for this next step in your academic journey. We are so happy you are here and we look forward to seeing you reach your goal. We believe we have a great campus and great people who want to help make your dream a reality.

This orientation will give you some valuable information to get you started on this next journey. We will cover various topics from logging into your accounts to services that we offer. This online orientation will not only provide you general information, but also a place you can come back to at any time should you need help. Please note that the New Student Orientation pages will be updated each semester to reflect any corrections or changes. At any point during your journey that questions arise, please do not hesitate to ask for help. We are here to assist you all the way through graduation!

The topics covered here will get you initially connected with JSCC. Do not worry if you have any trouble logging into your accounts, we are here to help you. Please go through the entire New Student Orientation, as we do not want you to miss any needed information. At the end of this orientation you will need to complete the registration sign-up form and select an option to sign up for your classes.

Staying Connected

Staying Connected!
To stay connected and be aware of happenings around campus and in the classroom make sure to log into your James Sprunt accounts often. Use Office 365 Email to communicate with your Advisor, your Instructors and James Sprunt staff throughout the semester. Use Self-Service to view your Financial Aid information, pay your tuition, and plan next semesters courses. Use Moodle for your online course material (course access will not be available until after 8:00am on the first day of classes).
You can access these accounts yourself by following the steps in the documents below. Should you need any help with account setup, contact JustAskTechSupport at 910-275-6400. The First Time Login Instructions page below lists specific login requirements for each account and provides individual step by step directions for each account. You may also view guided videos of how to setup these accounts if you prefer. The Printable Password Sheet can be used to keep track of all the login information or take a snapshot with your phone of your information.

Paying For College

Financial Aid
Starting Spring 2024 or Summer 2024, you should complete the 2023-2024 FAFSA application using your 2021 tax information. Starting Fall 2024, you should complete the 2024-2025 FAFSA application using your 2022 tax information.
Electronic filing is the fastest, easiest and most accurate way to apply. Please review the Financial Aid 101 and the Paying for College documentation below for additional information.

Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act (WIOA)
WIOA is designed to help job seekers access employment, education, training, and support services to succeed in the labor market. If you need money for school—Need to be re-trained or have been laid off from your workplace, WIOA may be an option to help bridge the gap. We encourage all students who complete a FAFSA to contact one of our WIOA Career Advisors to learn more!

Foundation Scholarships
A limited number of academic scholarships are awarded each year to students currently enrolled or planning to enroll in a curriculum program at James Sprunt Community College. Awards range from $300 to $1,200. These awards are made by the JSCC Scholarship Committee based primarily on a superior academic record. Recipients are selected each May for the following academic year. Feel free to visit the Foundation Scholarships webpage for additional information.

How To Pay Online in Self-Service Page

Use this feature to pay your tuition online using Self-Service.

Registration - Need to know

Registration
When registering for your classes you will speak with either your program Advisor, your program Dean, or a Counselor to assist in scheduling your courses. Remember it is your responsibility to make sure you are taking the correct classes for your program. Ask them to run a program evaluation to make sure all classes are counting in your program and to update your financial information for your next steps. Upon completion, you will receive a Registration Statement which shows your schedule and tuition charges. Keep up with this form as you will need it for other areas (Bookstore, Student ID).
Starting semester Summer 2024:
Should you need to make any schedule changes, the final Registration Day for Summer 2024 is Thursday, May 16th from 8 am - 6 pm. If you have registered for courses but decide not to attend JSCC please let Student Services know, before the end of Registration Day, to avoid charges on your account.
Add/Drop is May 20th-21st for schedule changes with your program Advisor, your program Dean, or a Counselor. Be aware that you may incur a 25% refund charge if you do not replace a drop course with another of equal credits.
Paying For Tuition
The payment deadline for Summer 2024 classes is May 16th, at 6:00 pm.

If paying out of pocket take the Registration Statement to the Business Office, which is located in the McGowen Building, or pay online via Self-Service.
If you have been awarded Financial Aid and your Registration Statement shows a negative balance then your tuition is taken care of. If you believe that you were awarded Financial Aid but a balance is showing, you need to immediately go to Financial Aid.
Bookstore
The JSCC bookstore is located in the Strickland Building. Once you have registered for classes you will need textbooks and supplies to be successful. Provide your JSCC Student ID number and your Registration Statement to the bookstore staff who will be glad to assist you in finding what you need.
Student ID & Parking Sticker
JSCC ID cards and parking stickers are issued in the Strickland Building SGA Office after you have registered for your classes. Students must present one form of government issued photo ID and class schedule. In order to obtain a Parking Sticker, the student must have a valid driver’s license and present vehicle information (year, make, model, color, and license plate number). Please print and complete the Photo ID and Vehicle Registration form provided below, and return it to the SGA office.
JSCC ID cards must be visible at all times while on campus, and under no circumstances should they be altered or lent to another person. The Parking Sticker must be on the back window on the driver’s side in the lower left corner at all times while parked on campus. Presentation of the ID card is required for identification or participation in various student activities or events. Persons who do not have proper identification may be asked to leave campus. Students who withdraw before the semester ends must return their ID cards and Parking Stickers in to the SGA Office.
Lost or misplaced ID cards and Parking Stickers must be replaced, and a fee of $5.00 is charged for each. Students will need to pay the fee at the Business Office and bring the receipt to the SGA Office in order to have their ID card and Parking Stickers replaced.

Throughout the semester there may be times that you need help regarding personal or academic related topics. This is where our JSCC Counselors are available to offer assistance. The Spartan's Table
A significant number of Duplin County area residents experience food insecurity. This means a portion of the JSCC student body, and their families don’t know where they will get their next meal. It is difficult to concentrate on classwork when you lack basic nutritional needs. We are here to help! The Spartan’s Table is an on-campus food and nutrition program for JSCC students. Anyone with a current JSCC ID can use The Spartan’s Table. Stop by Student Services in the Strickland building, or contact Karla Blanton at 910-275-6367 or kblanton@jamessprunt.edu for more information.

Transportation Issues?

Should there come a time during the semester you find yourself with no transportation to school, Duplin County Transportation can help. JSCC has partnered with Duplin County Transportation to provide free roundtrip transportation to JSCC. Please visit our website to find out more details and to review the JSCC Rider Policy.

The Student Government Association
The Student Government Association (SGA) is an organization that you are automatically a part of by being an enrolled student. Meetings are held monthly at designated times, and students are encouraged to be active in this organization which offers various activities throughout the year.

Phi Theta Kappa
Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society for community college students. To be eligible for this honor, a student must have completed at least 12 hours of course work, have a GPA of at least 3.5, have established a record of academic excellence, be of good moral character, and possess qualities of good citizenship. Spartan Skills Award
Extra Recognition!

Eligible students can achieve the Spartan Skills Award by completing online activities via Moodle. Completion of these activities will be the indication that these students have gone the extra mile to demonstrate their Spartan Skills. Of the students who complete these activities, faculty will then vote for the one student who best represents the ideal employee, and that student will receive the distinguished Spartan Helmet Award. Scholarly Women of Tomorrow
This organization prepares women for success by offering academic/personal, professional, and leadership development. Applications are emailed, to your (JSCC Email) at the beginning of each semester. Be aware that they do have a deadline. To find out more information please go here.

Spartan Men of Distinction
Spartan Men of Distinction is about “making a difference in society academically, professionally, and socially”. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for JSCC male students. By preparing students for responsible citizenship and success, we will help transform our educational environment and strengthen the academic, professional, social, and economic development in our communities. Our purpose is to increase student satisfaction, academic success, retention, graduation, and 4-year college transfer rates. By doing so, the program will facilitate academic achievement, personal, professional, and leadership development. This will be accomplished by ensuring that each participant establishes a close relationship with a JSCC faculty or staff member who will monitor each student’s academic and professional success.

Sexual Misconduct/Title IX

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 states: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” In accordance with Title IX, and consistent with James Sprunt’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of human respect and dignity, any form of sexual discrimination is taken seriously and will be investigated. Sexual discrimination includes, but is not limited to, gender inequity, sexual assault, and other acts of sexual violence, such as sexual harassment. Sexual harassment is any unwelcome and/or uninvited verbal or physical conduct directed towards a person because of his or her sex. Feel free to visit the Title IX webpage for additional information.
Parties who believe they have been or are being sexually discriminated against are encouraged to formally report occurrences of Sexual Misconduct to the College’s Title IX officials. Alternatively, reporting parties may make reports to other College officials (trusted faculty or staff members, campus police or safety officers, Human Resources personnel, etc.). Disclosure of information regarding an allegation of sexual discrimination to any College employee is official notice to the institution and should be submitted to the Title IX Coordinator.
