Operation Spark Middle School Robotics Application
  • The application should be completed in part by students and in part by their parents/guardians. See instructions below.

  • Timeline

    • Deadline to Apply is Tuesday, September 12.

    • Families will be notified of decisions via email on or before September 13

    • Accepted students will be asked to confirm participation by September 15

    • Student/parent orientation will be Monday, September 18 at 5 PM

  • Factors we’ll consider if we receive more applications than available spots:

    • School diversity - we seek to build a team of students from schools across the city

    • Short answer responses on the application

    • We can accommodate a total of 20 students in this program. A lottery may be used in addition to the above selection process, depending on how many families apply, and we'll utilize a waitlist during the first two weeks of the program in case spots open up.

  • What Students Will Learn and Do


    • Explore science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through participating in hands-on learning activities and real-world problem solving

    • Work with other students to develop solutions to challenges

    • Brainstorm and research problems and issues around the season’s theme: energy

    • Build and test innovative solutions for a real world problem

    • Build and code a robot to solve various missions


  • Logistics

    • Location: 514 Franklin Avenue, New Orleans, LA, 70117

    • Families must provide transportation to and from all meetings

    • Orientation:  Monday, September 18, 5PM to 6:30PM

    • Fall Weekly Meeting Sessions

      • Mondays, 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, September 25 - December 11, 2023

    • Spring Weekly Sessions TBD

    • Competition Dates: TBD, but the FIRST Lego League competition is usually held the first or second Saturday of December (this is a close to all-day event)
