OVERVIEW

This Orton-Gillingham (OG) course is designed to meet the needs of classroom teachers and instructional support staff to provide structured literacy instruction aligned with the science of reading. The primary focus of the training is to support participants to effectively deliver OG in a whole-class setting as a Tier 1 preventative approach in primary-level classrooms.Utilizing this whole-group model as a preventative measure effectively reduces the number of students identified as at-risk readers, reducing the strain on staff and schedules to provide Tier 2 and 3 interventions.

To meet the needs of older students and those students requiring Tier 2 and 3 interventions, course content on diagnostic assessments and prescriptive lessons is included. In addition, participants will learn how to use a problemsolving approach to identify specific skill deficits and customize instruction to support small-group interventions.

Participants will also have access to daily OG lesson plans for Tier 1 instruction and customization for Tier 2 and 3 interventions at no additional charge upon the successful completion of training.

This in-person training utilizes a range of formats to provide participants with essential background knowledge, handson practice, and instructor feedback to measure understanding. Participants can expect to spend one-hour outside class on homework for each day of in-class training. Homework assignments include supplemental readings, independent practice, and viewing recordings of lesson demonstrations.

PRESENTER

This opportunity will be presented by The Reading Clinic of Central Indiana (TRCCI), which provides training and consultation services in the Orton-Gillingham approach and the Science of Reading. Jamey Peavler, M.Ed. and Orton-Gillingham Academy Certified Fellow-in-Training, is the Director and Trainer for TRCCI.

STRUCTURE

Each day of in-person training is six hours, with a 30-min lunch and two short breaks throughout the day. Participants may attend Part 1: Reading Foundations (K-1) and/or Part 2: Basic OG (Grades 2 and up). In addition, participants may choose to attend Part 3: Implementing a Reading Science Framework, which covers all grade levels, regardless of whether they attend Part 1 or Part 2 of the training.

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate from The Reading Clinic of Central Indiana indicating which training was completed. In addition, participants that complete all three parts (Reading Foundations, Basic, and Implementing a Reading Science Framework) and the independent practice requirements* will receive a certificate indicating they have met the requirements as an Authorized Reading Specialist, as outlined by the Indiana Department of Education.

*To fulfill the additional independent practice requirements for Authorized Reading Specialist Certification, participants will have a full year to complete an online learning module. The 20-hour module is self-paced and includes additional readings, videos, and proficiency checks (i.e., Flipgrid video demonstrations and informal assessments). There is an additional $100 per-person fee for this online module. More information is available upon request.
