QUIRKY WORLD ... A bridge too far for dental work in McDonald’s

ENGLAND: The High Court has upheld a decision to strike off “for public protection” a dentist who tried to carry out work on a woman’s teeth in a McDonald’s.

QUIRKY WORLD ... A bridge too far for dental work in McDonald’s

Anca Claudia Macavei tried to fit a bridge in the Cannon St, London, branch of the fast-food restaurant in 2012.

Macavei argued that a General Dental Council professional conduct committee decision in July 2014 to strike her off the register of dentists for that incident and other misconduct was a “disproportionate sanction”.

But yesterday, Mrs Justice Patterson, sitting in London, dismissed her appeal.

Macavei, a Romanian dentist, was living in London and advertising for Romanian patients online when she met the woman known as Patient 1.

The court heard that she had an arrangement to use the Cannon Street Practice surgery on an “ad hoc basis”, but her relationship with the practice manager had deteriorated and in February 2012, she met Patient 1 in McDonald’s.

When the woman refused to be treated there, Macavei tried to carry out the work in the hallway outside of the dental surgery.

No puppy love

WALES: The RSPCA has launched an appeal for information after eight newborn puppies were found in a rubbish bin.

The tiny pups — some with their umbilical cords still attached — were discovered by children in Queensferry, North Wales. Bosses from the animal charity said they were stunned at how someone could throw away the animals as if they were rubbish.

RSPCA inspector Tim Jones said: “It is totally unnecessary and these puppies could have died if nobody had heard them. They could not be seen in the bin.”

The puppies — thought to be Staffordshire bull terrier cross-breeds — are being cared for the RSPCA.

Get your goat

USA: Authorities suspect a Portland, Oregon, man accused of stealing two bicycles also took a dwarf goat.

Police say the 18-year-old, Oleg Stepanovich Plyushchev, tried to sell bikes on Craigslist that had been stolen from a backyard and garage.

Investigators say that following Plyushchev’s arrest, detectives learned he was connected to the theft of a dwarf goat named Penelope that was taken from its owner’s yard.

The Oregonian reports the man had put Penelope on consignment sale in August at a farm supply store in Boring. Penelope was recovered by Clackamas County sheriff’s deputies.

Village for rent

HUNGARY: Rooms at Hungary’s village-for-rent are going fast.

More than 300 inquiries and reservations for 280 guests have been made since mayor Kristof Pajer last week began advertising the village of Megyer, available for 210,000 forints a day.

Pajer said tourists are coming from as far away as Australia, South Africa, Sweden, and the US and the village “is booked solid in August and most of April and May”.

Amenities offered by Megyer, population 18 and 190km southwest of Budapest, include seven guest houses that sleep 39 people, a bus stop, horses, chickens, and four hectares of farm land.

Lucky save

USA: A Florida dog was tied to railroad tracks and shot twice, but survived after police rescued the animal before she was hit by an oncoming train, authorities said.

The mixed-breed dog, named Cabela, was in stable condition but requires a leg amputation, according to the Tampa Police Department, which is investigating

Officers found the dog, who had been shot in the neck and shoulder, tied to the tracks with a belt.
