I looked at the Corkscrew pretty carefully a few months ago and came to the conclusion that it cannot work as designed. Something about track ramps and power and rollers and where the holes are... I wasn't 100% certain, because I have not tried to do a lot with minecarts, but it definitely seemed like it couldn't work.

Unless something has changed recently you can put the pumps in in any order and they will all connect up with that design. I've used that kind of method lots of times. I was actually a little confused reading the updates that you weren't just ordering them all built at the same time. If I were attempting to get the Corkscrew working I'd probably use impulse ramps. The problem with rollers is that you'd need a lot of them to keep the cart moving upward and that would use a lot of power. Especially as the central power assemblies can't connect diagonally so a series of axles and assemblies would be required on every level to connect up the rollers. Careful digging of the correct squares by the turns would be required to avoid derail problems if the cart sped up too much. Edit: A quick test in the latest version shows that as long as you designate a pump to be built on the level below you can designate a pump to be built above it. As far as I am aware it doesn't matter the order in which the pumps are built as long as the designations are still in place. Just completed the bottom pump and removed it before completing the pump above. The pump above is now constructed and happily floating on one square. No, you can't build the pumps out of order using the design posted, because you literally cannot place a pump unsupported. Try to build a pump over the hole and the game will show it as unbuildable. Once there's a pump beneath, it becomes supported and you can do it. The side-gears thing should work, though. The corkscrew would have to have a whole lot of ramps removed and then replaced in a different configuration. I think. It's not just where the rollers/whatever are placed, it's that you cannot create a corkscrew track given the placement of ramps/holes/etc that are there right now. I think.

20th Obsidian, 253 I sought the Chief Engineer MedievalMedic and found him at a mechanic's workshop tinkering with a pile of superiorly-carved gabbro cogs. “About the magma project,” I began. “Aye Mister Leperfish?” he asked, pulling gently on his neatly braided hair and giving my feet his full attention. “It is taking a very long time!” I exclaimed. “Oh well sir it's owin' to th' pump stack construction ye know, what with th' main power transaxle providin' support te' th' overlyin' screw cylinder containment vessel which, as ye'd be aware o' course, is a big fuckin' hunk o' stone wi' a hole drilled through it scuse me Elvish, so the lower pump hasta be in place an' well-secured afore th' next one up can be built.” “Yes, exactly” I replied although I did not understand exactly. “I have noticed it takes about two weeks for each successive pump to be designed and assembled.” MedievalMedic nodded. “Mister Leperfish sir given th' care an' precision needed te' protect against high pressure magma containment loss that'd be aboot right fer th' design phase an' construction, aye.” I waited but MedievalMedic continued to stare quietly at the floor. “It will take nearly two years to finish at this rate, Chief Engineer. Surely there must be some way we can build all of the pumps at once?” “Nurp thas' th' most efficient design fer ah pump stack 's I've evver figgered er seen sir, ain't no question.” I was disappointed but I would not contradict the dwarf more expert in a craft on his expert opinion. Until I suddenly had a strange thought. MedievalMedic had just turned to leave with his gear assembly when I blurted “Wait a moment wait a moment, what do you mean 'most efficient'?” The dwarf stopped abruptly and then turned slowly back with a small smile on his face. “Well! Assa great question innit? Y'see 'efficiency' at's a technical term referrin' te what degree o' yer inputs such as materials' n labor n' power gets used fer performin' actual work. See inna design o' any mechanical system there's allways goin' te be a certain amount o' wastage, fer example due to drive train friction or th' scraps left ovver when ye' turn blocks o' stone in ta containment vessels.” “I see,” I replied. “So what you are saying is that the pump stack design is the one that makes the most, ah, 'efficient' use of materials and energy to lift the magma to the surface?” “Aye, an' labor as well Mister Leperfish sir. Minimum amount o' assigned jobs so's you an' th' mayor don't have yer other jobs gettin' delayed on account o' this project.” “Um.” I said, and by my tone the Chief Engineer I think understood I had become annoyed. His vision was once more fixated on the floor and he began to worry and flex the braid tightly gripped in his fists. “MedievalMedic,” I began, and he visibly winced. “By any chance, is it possible, that if we used a, um, less efficient design, in terms of labor and materials, the pump stack could be finished more quickly?” I think he almost cried but he answered me honestly. “Well Mister Leperfish sir yes I suppose that's possible but sir not te be tellin' ye yer job or nuthin' but sir fer an engineer efficiency is a bit like th' ideal an' pinnacle o' the art? S' like... ah, it'd be like if ye told th' cooks not te make any roasts er stews er whatnot any more on account of jest eatin' a raw plump helmet is much faster?” “Well,” I told him, “Actually just eating a raw plump helmet is surely more efficient than eating a delicious well-prepared finely-minced turkey tallow and well-minced prepared sheep lung roast?” The Chief Engineer seemed to choke a little bit and then although he shook his head back and forth twice he said very quietly “Well I spose ye could look at it that way sir” but I took mercy on him “It's alright MedievalMedic” I said and clapped him on the back. “It's only that I would like you to perhaps if you can modify the design so that rather than making maximum efficiency of labor and materials of which I assure you we have plenty, I would like you to make maximum efficiency of our time, in terms of driving the project to completion in a minimum amount of years. He brightened up considerably at that. “Ah! Well sir why din't ye say so aye that I kin fuckin' well do.” He hurried off before I could ask exactly what he intended therefore I will have to wait to see what changes are made. 22nd Obsidian The first step appears to be the removal of stone adjacent to the channels where the pumps go. I approved a long list of mining designations. 23rd Obsidian Our new artificial lake is more than two thirds full. 24th Obsidian The dwarven caravan is finally leaving. We bid them fond farewell. I expect most of them will arrive next year as immigrants if the pattern of the past few years holds up. 28th Obsidian On an unfinished level of the pump stack someone has constructed a support mechanism. I approved a pump construction job. There is no pump below so this must be MedievalMedic's solution. If I understand the design this support mechanism will be removed and replaced with a wall later. 1st Granite 254 Another year turns and it is spring once more. Eighteen years ago today seven dwarves began The Noble Work at Bronzestabbed in The Hill of Rewarding. I mean this year to see the completion of The Noble Work. 5th Granite CommaToes has reached age of majority. She will farm 9th Granite A spring shower dampens the mood of every dwarf who must work outdoors. The water helps to fill the huge reservoir. It will be full by the end of Granite. 12th Granite Forer today constructed a new pump in the magma pump stack. It hangs suspended over the hole in the floor, its “power transaxle” dangling down into the next level below. MedeivalMedic has found a way! It is only a waste of one mechanism per pump. I suppose once the stack is completed we can even recover the support assemblies. I approved an order for another 25 supports to be built which will use all of our extra mechanisms. I also wrote requisitions for another 60 to be cut to ensure we will not run out while building the remaining pumps. 16th Granite We are finally dumping all of this useless clay so that magma-proof stone can be brought near the workshops for blocks. 19th Granite With the help of the recent showers the huge pit is finally completely full of water. We will leave the floodgates open to invite fish. No goblins will swim this pit no ogres that fall in will have to be battled below in the dirt. The fiendish murk may drift across it but with bridges raised no dwarf must be murked. 21st Granite Gabbro is the most plentiful stone that will not melt in magma we have access to but few gabbro stones remain accessible therefore I ordered gabbro quarrying a dozen levels below the main living levels. We also began production of the next 25 magma pumps. 23rd Granite It has been too long since we mined hard rock at Bronzestabbed! The miners struck garnierite while quarrying gabbro. The excitement of the discovered gemstone should not be forgotten. 24th Granite The thread spinner Wili Thimshurgusil abandoned a hauling job to rush for a workshop refusing to divulge intent. All agree it is the sign of the dwarven Mood.

You could assume they have a system of ventilation shafts running in the background, but really it needs to be dank to keep the mushrooms thriving. That's probably why their beds are just a bare wooden frame, any sort of blankets or mattress would be mildew soup in no time. Maybe that's why dwarfs are so hairy too, they are like beavers using a thick coat of greasy fur to protect them from their damp environment. How horses and cows are able to thrive underground is a mystery though.

26th Granite, 254 Wili has found a magma forge suited to his secret need. Our mining for stone proceeds with familiar efficiency. The garnierite we have found may be useful someday as well. 28th Granite Twenty five screw pumps are being designed simultaneously. The chief engineer MedievalMedic's plan is working. 2nd Slate The floor beneath the opening in the bottom of the dig where the fiendish murk zombie dwarf Lazy Trebuchet still dwells is completed. I ordered a chamber of old Ugathville breached so a wall can be built to contain magma there. A murk was spotted! It is directly above the ugathville chamber we just breached, forming from the ground of that same dig. It billowed and whirled, soon pouring down into the hole. As soon as Ark was clear I ordered the doors locked to prevent any dwarf being exposed. An arm of the murk reached out to crawl across the tepid stream. 3rd Slate It would seem this murk protected from wind could not spread far. It was already thinning in the morning and by midday was gone. 8th Slate A party of dwarves have arrived from the south to make their new homes at Bronzestabbed. There are five, all women, accompanied by a pet bunny and reindeer calf. HiKaiser Koliklist “Wheelwhispers” is an accomplished weaver of early middle age with no relatives from nowhere in particular. I informed weaving is actually a useful skill at Bronzestabbed due to our constant need for fresh clothing. She shrugged but accepted her new duties here with no apparent distress. Nonobots Igamushat “Gorgebasements” is a trader of middle age who previously visited Bronzestabbed and has returned to immigrate permanently like so many other traders of The Rare Ship in recent years. She yelled hello when we met and described herself as mostly unskilled even at trading. I informed Bronzestabbed always needs more haulers. Ouroborus Gankol “Dishwheel” is a trader of middle age who previously visited Bronzestabbed etc. She demanded work as negotiator but I informed Bronzestabbed has dozens of experienced negotiators having absorbed dozens of former traders and therefore like her traveling companion Nonobots she will haul items unless she would like to volunteer for military service. ToxicFrog Medtobartob “Blockadecombined” is a trader and charcoal maker of middle age with no family and from nowhere in particular. She informed a desire to immigrate in order to work hard and fight the goblin scum which is an excellent attitude. We have little need for burnt wood with the magma forges working but she will find good work here in some profession or another. Aeble Larkilrud “Meetingbronze” is a trader of middle age with no family and from nowhere in particular. She came to Bronzestabbed to admire our hundreds of masterwork and legendary artworks and to help the cause of The Noble Work in whatever way she is able. She will help by hauling stones from the newest quarry. 10th Slate The last few screw pumps are being designed. Walls must be built around the pumps to contain the magma, and once every pump is in place, the temporary gear supports must be removed so that the walls can be completed. 13th Slate Promontory finished the magma containment wall in old Ugathville. That passageway will now be sealed. 18th Slate We began removal of the temporary pump supports, and additional wall construction. 21st Slate Aldantefax and his wife serelon are parents to a new baby boy, Average Bear Muthkatalmosh “Mansiongleams.” Bronzestabbed prospers. We number 325 among the living now. 25th Slate After nearly a month gathering materials Wili has finally begun to craft his secret work. 28th Slate Forer has managed to seal herself inside one of the pumps' magma chambers. We added two more needed windmills after taking into account the “transmission loss” from the axles and gearboxes needed to bring the windmill power to the pump stack. 2nd Felsite Wili has revealed the most sublime – and the most valuable – crutch in the world. It is made of solid adamantine. Depicted on the crutch is the familiar parable of the vile woman groom and the dwarf. It is called Ganadlanggud, The Special Shins, to remind of the nature of the sacred metal: it is a necessary support for those who are crippled in the leg such as by combat and not for trivial purpose. Wili's prowess with blacksmithing shall live as legend forever. She will have no other duty. Every remaining construction task for the pump stack is assigned. It will be only days now. 16th Felsite H1KE gave birth in the main entrance of the Great Hall to a baby boy today whom she named WOOP WOOP Fikodnoglesh “Glazedsavage.” The boy has four older brothers. 17th Felsite The elves are back. 22nd Felsite I received report Bilal placed the final Nickel door needed to provide safe access to the pumps. MedievalMedic met me at the top of the stack. “'S done, Mister Leperfish Sir!” he reported smartly, so pleased that his gaze was directed as high as my chest. “Every pump is in place?” I asked. “Aye, forty-two magma pumps all mounted an' linked.” “And each level is secure? No leaks, no cracks?” “Th' magma containment pas't inspection, not a fuckin' pinhole anywhere s' I can tell.” “And the power situation? We have enough windmills?” “Fifteen windmills makin' five hunnert an' sixty units o' torques, an' drivetrain loss o' a hunnert' an twenny four, an' if I got it right th' pumps'll need four hunnert' an thirty, an' that makes six torques te spare, sir.” “I shall trust your calculations, Chief Engineer” I told him. We had also installed a pair of gabbro floodgates, to control the magma at the top of the stack as needed, each linked to a lever by gabbro mechanisms. “Well done,” I added. “Instead of a year and a half it has only taken a month. Very efficient.” MedievalMedic gave me a wry look then, briefly meeting my eyes, and smiling with half of his mouth. I gave the order to pull the lever that engages the power to the pumps.

23rd Felsite, 254 Vetinari100 was the dwarf that drew the task to pull the lever. There was a distant grinding noise and with astonishing speed, magma gushed out of the pump at the top of the stack! I had imagined the reservoirs on each level would slowly fill before the pump above would begin to lift the molten rock but I was incorrect. The reservoirs are necessary according to the Chief Engineer, but magma is lifted through the entire stack constantly. The earthen channel at the top was half-filled in less than a minute. A minute later it was completely full, the magma held back only by the upper floodgates. We let the stack run, to fill all the reservoirs and to allow the walls and pumps to reach temperature. This is the time of greatest risk... if any part crucial to containment may fail, it will do so during the next two or three days. Gradually each floor's pump reservoir filled, from the top floor downward. 27th Felsite The sound of the pumps changed, as the last of the reservoirs filled: there is a new deep thrumming, the entire stack at full pressure, the pumps locked against the inability of the magma to compress or flow into any new space. We have reduced the level of the magma pipe measurably. I sent dwarves to inspect. The walls are hot but no leaks were found. No fires burned. Nothing melted. It works! With great joy I ordered the floodgate at the top of the stack leading to the pit where still roams the fiendish murk zombie Lazy Trebuchet opened. Lazy Trebuchet the official broker decided to engage with the elves who are ready for business. We have a few items of clothing which have worn out since the last caravan. We also offered some trinkets and weird foreign nicknacks for trade. We asked in exchange several barrels of imported vintages, and some bins of good Elven cloth. The elves were offended somehow. It seems a pair of sandals we offered had a wooden decoration on it. I think it was an item of Elvish make, their own wood, but they refused to say, instead making a big show of how shocked they were and holding up the sandals as if they were the corpse of a murdered child. So be it. We have no need of elves or their wares. Bronzestabbed is now entirely self-sufficient. They began packing their bags. 28th Felsite Late in the day, YOTC opened the floodgate. Instantly magma shot down the tunnel, with enormous pressure behind it, ramming into an old Black Cap fungus that filled the hallway. 1st Hematite On the first day of summer in the year 254, the dwarves of Bronzestabbed released a lava flow into the Hills of Vice. The lava burned its way through three fungus trees and burst out into the open pit. Trees erupted into flame and smoke boiled into the air as bones and abandoned items charred and burned. 2nd Hematite A few dwarves stood and watched as the lava flow crept across the floor of the pit, and the plumes of smoke rose high into the air. 4th Hematite Slowly the flow crept toward the murk zombie. It hardly moved, only swaying in place, staring at the earthen walls without seeing them. 5th Hematite A tongue of glowing red rock crawled past a slight hillock, moss sizzling and burning beneath it, a yard or less from Lazy Trebuchet. She did not flinch. The rags she wore burst into flames all at once, with a flash of bright yellow and then billowing smoke obscuring the view. She uttered no sound as she burned like a tallow candle tossed into a forge. 6th Hematite She is still there, standing in a half a foot of simmering lava. Her body is blackened and charred, a barely-visible silhouette, illuminated by the glow of the fires, shrouded by the black smoke. She moves occasionally, shifting from one foot to the other, lifting the charcoal remnants of an arm. I am glad I cannot see her face. 7th Hematite She still has not fallen. She tilts her unseeing head and stares at the walls of Bronzestabbed with sockets running with fuming black gore. Boiling blood gushes forth from the still living corpse. She snaps and pops like a campfire. Bones crack and char. A curtain of smoke from the nearby moss and grass burning away keeps us from seeing too much. It is still the worst thing I have ever seen. 8th Hematite Today I did not go out to see Lazy Trebuchet. I saw her enough when I slept. The report is that the zombie is now mostly a visible black skeleton encasing blood-spewing, smoldering charred organs. She still wades idly in the molten rock swirling about her boney legs. 9th Hematite The evil curse of the murk must supply ever more blood to the zombie's body thus it never runs out while burning for days in a pool of lava. The lava has begun to fall into the pit we floored and the walled-off chamber of Old Ugathville. A hundred dwarves are idle. I think they pray for something to do that is not watching what is happening in the magma pit. 12th Hematite She still has not fallen. Perhaps when the pit fills more she will eventually melt. A ghost appeared in the clothing stockpile to haunt Internet Kraken. It is Ventnor who was killed by reptile men many years ago. I do not know why he has chosen now to rise from the dead. I ordered a memorial discreetly hoping not to disturb the ghost child former overseer Pickled Tink. The Chief Engineer reported the magma pump is limited by the flow of magma beneath the bottom-most pump which does not replenish as quickly as the pump can draw. Expanding the channels for flow into that chamber will help. With idle miners and no desire to remain outdoors I personally inspected and ordered mining operations. 16th Hematite We have cleared space and will channel to allow more magma to flow from a previous flooded dig to the west. I can still see smoke rising from the corpse in the pit. She yet burns. 18th Hematite We dig another channel to let more magma flow. I ordered Ventnor's memorial constructed. There has been an error. The hallway that we paved in stone to prevent magma flowing down into the mines has a stair which was covered with a hatch but the hatch was constructed of diorite which will soften and melt in hot magma. The stair is running with molten stone. No-one is in danger: these mines are long abandoned and sealed. But it will take a very long time for all those mines and digs to fill. The hatch on the floor above is also diorite therefore it will melt as well. After thinking some time I conceived a possible solution. I do not know if it will work but we can try it at little risk. First we will wait for the upper hatch to melt. 19th Hematite The channels are done. I ordered flooring built for safety. 20th Hematite The ghost Ventnor will trouble Internet Kraken no more. 21st Hematite The deepest stairs are filled and now the lowest malachite mine is filling. It is a shame to lose the ore but we have far more ore than we will use and there are surely more veins we can dig should we ever need it. She still burns. It can only be the curse. The flesh heals and reforms beneath the char only to burn anew. Blood fills her corpse from some Ugath-cursed source, to boil and smoke and pop in the fire. Surely she must melt when the magma rises to immerse her! We have dropped caged murk zombies into the magma pool before and they were destroyed. It is only a matter of time. One more little challenge. I must persevere, in Queen Sankis' memory. Leperflesh fucked around with this message at 07:51 on Oct 24, 2014 |

quote:She burns Holy poo poo! And caged critters aren't the same thing. It's the cage being destroyed and the contents removed as a result of that.

This is imensly creepy. Maybe that is the final fate of the murk zombies. Standing knee deep in lava and cracking up like a pyre log for ever longing only for the sweet release of death. I wonder at what point that thing dies and what the ultimate cause of death will be. Also I want to see if it could still fight. It's not even missing any body part after all.

Goddamn that is metal as gently caress. A moat filled with the charred ever-burning bones of undying super zombies that bleed forever.
