6th Limestone, 252
There is a murk in the south. Those have never threatened dwarves who prudently stay close to the walls and not establish illicit children meeting spots in the brush.

Therefore I am not heedless but I did not order confinement. We gather our fallen for respectful entombment and watch the burbling horizon to remind of Ugath.

Mortal Sword and salttotart receive treatment in the upper hospital. Mortal Sword's medical record is impressively lengthy and he is in traction to repair the broken bones of his left hand which is infected. However he is happy and may count himself lucky that he is not among our fallen.

7th Limestone
The murk which was never large faded away early today.

A mandate given by the mayor before the siege began was today fulfilled.

I permitted recovery of all objects in the courtyard and maze. Also I ordered removal of the two bridges for the purpose of reconstructing them with superior design lacking terrible security holes.

8th Limestone
Several dwarves reported midway through the maze the injured and lone surviving elf Amale Femavaali has at last despaired and was stricken by fatal melancholy despite her freedom being now unimpeded and before her eyes. Her elf steed sensed the loss of its master's sanity and became enraged bucking and flinging items out of its bag with every yard she drags it along. I am certain now Bronzestabbed is fated never to succeed in the effort to deliver all of its threadbare laundry to the elves. I cannot doubt the elves will blame us for this disastrous trade mission.

The crazed behavior of the horse scared off workers and haulers but the elf still wobbled and dragged herself and the animal out of the maze leaving behind a trail of abandoned wares.

11th Limestone
Clocks has not been rescued. Dozens of haulers are gathering discarded pants and hats and piccolos from the maze where the elves were slain but not one dwarf has been willing to assist a military hero to her bedrest.

The mayor's fetish for socks has not been tempered by combat experience as I had hoped.

12th Limestone
The butcher Jon Morulurist is missing. I do not recall a fatality report for him nor has his body been found. It is a concern.

I ordered a new bridge. We will situate a new Maze further north and decommission the old one. It will give more room for siege engineers to not be frightened and also I will ensure the walls connect correctly after the bridge is built and proved operational.

17th Limestone
Although every dwarf without another job is hauling I recalled the urgency of the mining project across the river. I issued new mining orders for the old volunteers.

Synthorange located the remains of the fallen Montalvo, who was trapped outside but was too unwary of the invaders and tried to come in and was slain as a result.

An ogre corpse is stinking the maze due to wafting miasmas exactly where the new bridge is under construction. Clocks is still down there!

There is no more sight of the despondent elf. The trail of abandoned goods leads west. We may assume she will die injured and alone in the wilderness or perhaps we may imagine she will be rescued by her kind if we have especially creative imaginations.

19th Limestone
The queen insists we replenish the stocks of ballista bolts despite the poor performance of those recently used. I begin to suspect she simply enjoys shooting them herself.

The stink from below the maze is getting worse. Numerous laborers report disgust.

The child Johnny Aztec is rescuing Clocks finally in the same area. I am not a doctor to know if the stench could worsen her condition. I thought to ask my friend Markus_cz for a briefest moment before recalling that of course Markus has been dead for years.

23rd Limestone
I ordered construction of fortifications along the southeast wall completed.

Corpse removal in the dirt diggings under the maze is finished also removing miasmas that sickened haulers.

27th Limestone
Hauling continues unabated. There are hundreds of items to be carried inside and each one accounted for. I avoided updating records by occupying myself with construction work.

1st Sandstone
The militia changes duty with the new month. I hope it will mean more haulers available.

The queen joined in the labor of building fortifications. She is thin and looks frail but can still haul a stone block and tap it into place. It is more useful than firing ballista bolts at ogres.

6th Sandstone
Twp of the volunteer miners have braved the glumpwrongs to cut a few yards of earth but much of the mining remains. The murk can still come at any time. It takes so long to get there a miner is ready for a break by the time they have only dug a small way. Perhaps a temporary bridge nearer the entrance is possible.

8th Sandstone
I am reminded we need even more storage space for bins and for bags. Remarkable. It will have to wait until there is more labor available. I want items recovered before hauling labor will be spent rearranging stockpiles.

12th Sandstone
By now we know no migrants will come this autumn. Reports of our besiegement doubtless discouraged them.

I ordered construction of new wall which will contain an inner bridge.

I paced the area of the new wall and left with old blood stains up to my knees. It is a gory place which nearly every dwarf in Bronzestabbed that hauls items has passed in the last month. The Queen's plan is subtle in this way that every dwarf living here will see and touch and smell what goblins mean to dwarvenkind. She could have made a Mandate or announcement years ago to all of The Rare Ship but Bronzestabbed makes us believe in the way an edict by a remote monarch could not.

The autumn is passing. I do not know if she will survive the winter at her advanced age. She places blocks on the wall and fires ballistae and worries over ballista ammunition but her work is done if I complete it or undone if I fail: there is nothing left for her to do now but watch and hope to survive to see it.

I thought about gone Markus and Vox Nihili and Bad Munki and Nettle Soup and I prayed the queen's grand plan will be worth their spent lives. If I fail the Queen I have also failed my friends and every other dwarf who died because they came to Bronzestabbed.

14th Sandstone, 252
To expedite the outdoor mining effort I have relieved the volunteers from all other duties.

I worked on new sections of wall while nearby Pookum constructed the new stone bridge.

The queen Sankis hauled stone blocks to lay atop mine. I believe it is an excuse to view the work being done without distressing workers uneasy with royal supervision.

16th Sandstone
The bridge was soon finished thus I ordered it hooked to a lever. Also I ordered the maze entrance to the west cut off. When it is clear of useful items we will drop it into the cavern and dwarves will not fall in during fights also siege engineers will not be frightened by too close foes.

17th Sandstone
The gem cutter Man Whore was seen struck by the mood of possession by a spirit.

It is a mood that does not improve skill but dwarves will still celebrate her artifact. She soon claimed a workshop and set about locating materials her eyes aglow with otherworldly light her lips silent.

The new wall is finished. When refuse is clear we will build a solid very secure bridge that spans across the walls tightly with no room for any creature to squeeze between.

19th Sandstone
Post Poste and Grey Hunter undertook today to cut the earth among the glumpwrongs.

Eventually Grey Hunter stood atop earth Post Poste was cutting and fell in. It is due to inexperience. No wounds were suffered.

The queen's latest mandate was fulfilled.

21st Sandstone
Our livestock are ever fecund. There will be sheeps milk and goat milk cheese.

The maze is closed. The bridge once raised secures our entrance. The woodcutter volmarias is bringing mechanisms already to connect it to a lever. When that is done Bronzestabbed cannot be invaded by creatures that do not fly.

22nd Sandstone
I visited the animal pens to view the infant goat and was startled by the noise. There are dozens of dogs and puppies! The dangerous animal room is also crowded. I will ponder a better use for them.

23rd Sandstone
Having returned to the surface Grey Hunter is implacable to improve mining skill even digging alone.

Toiwat followed that example to also dig without fear of murk.

26th Sandstone
Toiwat and Grey Hunter show dedication and made good progress. Grey Hunter again stood where another dwarf dug and fell in. Unharmed in soft fungus and dirt he will perservere.

Impy and GrimRevenant arrived too late to view Grey Hunter the Ditch-Diver's amusing falls.

They relieved Toiwat but then GrimRevenant was overcome by birth labor!

The dwarf Headhunter Joe is the first born outside under the bright sky among glumpwrongs and meeds with kangaroos leaping nearby.

GrimRevenant is nothing but dutiful. She swaddled her infant and took up her pick to complete assigned digging labor.

28th Sandstone
JimmyTheD reported for mining work today.

2nd Timber
Grey Hunter returned once more to mining duty.

4th Timber
While updating records a dwarf ran in to tell me there is a new murk! I felt dread for the miners until I knew it was in the southeast away from all laboring dwarves.

6th Timber
The digging is finished. Now I will see if this approach can work. There is a kangaroo that will not escape. I have no pity for a disruptive kangaroo but if it were made a murk zombie that would be a problem.

8th Timber
Man Whore has finally accumulated the materials her spirit desires. Dwarves whisper when near her and await the excitement of artistic perfection revealed.

Frionnel was seen screaming obscenities in the statue stockpile.

She is understandably aggrieved for her dead husband Fanzay. Also she lost her daughter SilentW and brother OrangeSoda and is in the Ramparts of Weather although has not fought. I advised others give her room.

12th Timber
Frionnel calmed down. A lamb was born. The “reformed cultist” Ruruk labored to link the support above old Ugathville to a spare lever in the lever hall.

Man Whore Sterusetur has made the most sublime milk quartz mug ever known.

Kuletmemad, “Abbeyreined” bears bone from the goblin enemy and depicts the parable of Erush Firelanterns the vile woman groom that reminds dwarves of the bravery of a dwarf to strike down evil in any form.

I would delight to quaff Longland Beer from that mug.

14th Timber
The caravan from the Mountainhomes has arrived! Once more we will attempt to burden their heavy wagons with our unwanted rags but I have long since lost all hope of success. Bronzestabbed will fall not to the murk nor to the goblins but to three hundred dwarves suffocating under heaps of worn out socks.

Nonetheless I ordered several thousand items transported to the trade depot (to join several hundred already stored there). In addition to worn items I included all oversized clothing and armor and all elven armor made of wood. There is little chance we will get it all to the depot on time but if we can off load even a quarter of it that will send a thousand pieces of junk away from our fortress forever.

16th Timber
A skulking kobold was discovered by the frightened yowls of a roving cat. I secretly pray it will steal some socks.

Only moments later a goblin snatcher was spied!

The first report raised my alarm until I heard it was trapped in one of the cage traps recently re-set out at the bridge over the stream. Hah! The creature will find no mercy here.

The kobold attempted escape southward but ran afoul of the caravan guards.

He was soon shot in the gut, but then a terrible accident occurred: propelled backwards by another bolt striking his body, the kobold slammed into a merchantdwarf who flipped backward in the air!

With a sickening crunch, the unarmored dwarf's skull shattered against a rock. He died instantly.

The caravan guards shouted in rage and closed in, soon hacking the filthy creature to pieces, but it was too late to save the life of their hapless comrade. We shall mourn with them as soon as they have come indoors.

Yet we watched, agape, from the walls as several of the merchants turned and headed east, leaving instead of coming inside! The loss of a fellow dwarf surely should not mean our fortress is passed by?

But then moments later, lookouts gave me the real reason the caravan had turned back, and my own heart fell like a heavy stone statue tossed down the refuse chute, to be immolated in magma.

The goblins have returned.

Did we ever find out the whole story behind Erush Firelanterns and Lorbam Tonguesmiths? It seems to show up so often on artifacts and engravings and things, it must be Bronzestabbed's favourite bedtime story. I dunno if there will be another LP immediately, or if it'll wait for a stable release, but either way I encourage everyone to check that out while I wind down Bronzestabbed. I am determined to see this LP through to the conclusion that I want, or at least, to a conclusion if the game doesn't cooperate (and I'm not going to cheat to make it give me the ending I want). I have to say Bronzestabbed has been the best DF LP probably since Boatmurdered. Syrupleaf went off track and got really weird, and while Headshoots was an awesome drat fortress the ending was a trainwreck.

So let's say Bronzestabbed is on track to beat Headshoots as long as it doesn't turn into flooding the fortress with harmless magma and getting beaten to death by an adamantine zombie's backpack.

I think Gemclod was my favorite besides Boatmurdered (have to give credit where it is due, Boatmurdered IS Dwarf Fortress). Syrupleaf, as you said, got really crazy with the story being pulled in all sorts of directions, but I think Gemclod hit the perfect balance of DF craziness and storytelling.

Gemclod was just a sandy pit with some walls though. Bronzestabbed has character, it even has a big copper bronze sword, although it's not quite as epic as Headshoots with the rivers of lava and beer waterfall and grim mountain of doom fortress.

Back when I was unemployed and this game was (relatively) less complicated architecture was by far the most important part of the game to me so Gemclod's blunt functionalism is a big mark against it in my book.

I remember trying to create a fortress with a totally underground gatehouse complex attached to a river, so that enemies would have to approach through a tunnel deep underground directly below large cisterns, so that the tunnel could be sealed up and flooded. It was a huge undertaking, complete with wind power to pump water out of the "flush" cisterns and an artificial cavern with an inverted tower hanging from the ceiling.

Naturally it failed catastrophically and flooded the fortress, despite what I believed were adequate fail-safe mechanisms designed to prevent exactly that scenario. But the idea was sound!

Hi, I just read through this entire thread in the last couple days and it's one of the best succession threads I've read through. Each overseer was pretty great in their own way. Pickled Tink Bronzestabbed becoming the Ghost Overseer of Fortress Bronzestabbed, being competent enough at maintaining the fort and patching holes that he's probably the only reason the fortress hasn't fallen to some horrible deadly dust/tantrum spiral at this point, and being a in-game friendly ghost years later makes him maybe my favorite Dwarf Fortress LP character ever.

If I'm reading Leperfish's intentions right, it'll be novel to see a succession LP with a good ending for once. You know, unless something bad happens. Bronzestabbed Endures!

Additionally I ordered Gnu Order and three other archery squads to assemble above the gatehouse to fire at the goblins if they approach the fortress too quickly.

Vander ran and easily outpaced the goblins whose shots were interfered by trees and brush and a quick dwarf's agility.

The merchants simply left. I regretfully canceled all trade depot hauling orders I spent many hours writing up and posting.

The ambushers ran for our entrance. The hunter Drone was struggling through the maze hauling a bin heavily laden with dozens of weapons too slowly but I ordered the bridge raised at least to give her a chance. It is the first time the mechanism to raise the maze bridge has been tested therefore I was worried for some error.

Drone dropped the bin hearing dwarves shouting warnings to get inside but it was too late. Instead she drew her crossbow and fired back at the goblins!

Although their aim was poor she was soon shot in the leg ensuring her fate. They pelted her with arrows and as she lapsed into unconsciousness we all knew she was doomed.

I felt great relief when the bridge raised. I ordered the other gate held open for outdoor dwarves to use for coming inside.

20th Timber

InwardChaos was hauling another heavy weapon bin attempting to get back to the entrance and instead found herself facing the squad of goblins. She dumped her bin and wisely retreated before they noticed her. Drone succumbed after another half-dozen arrows pierced her still form.

I ordered the ballistae dwarfed. If the goblins remain to shoot at us long enough we may shoot back with huge bolts that ogres can shrug off but goblins cannot.

Balon and Gnu Sheriff took position atop the gatehouse and opened fire on the goblins who have begun to explore the area before our fortress. Gnu immediately scored hits being a legendary crossbowdwarf but Balon was also able to shoot the enemy with some accuracy.

Within a minute or so, three of the goblins lay writhing in pain, and the other three began to retreat, cursing and abandoning their comrades with typical cowardice.

22nd Timber
I ordered the bridge lowered to allow a militia squad to go out and slay the two goblins who badly wounded have crawled beyond Gnu's range. Their comrades have escaped to tell their fellows of Bronzetabbed's new resilience.

23rd Timber
The milita was slow to respond. The injured goblins have dragged themselves across the river already. Much too late I realized I could have ordered the bridge over the stream raised. It has not been operated in so many years I forgot that it was possible! In truth I am not even sure which lever operates it.

We will recover and bury Drone and avenge her death when we can.

Another goblin snatcher was discovered! This one had entered through the east gate and surprised Crackmaster. The creature immediately fled and Crackmaster came to no harm beyond a frightening moment.

Only minutes alter a kobold thief was spotted and forced to flee over the new maze bridge. Our enemies having failed to besiege us try every avenue to sneak inside instead. They will never find the fortress's entrances unguarded while I am overseer.

As it happened I was there in the maze and ordered Rezam who was nearby to attack the kobold. Instantly he shot the evil thing in the head!

Another shot to the leg crippled the pathetic creature and soon enough it bled to death.

27th Timber
While the crisis played out on the surface the linkages were completed. It is time to know if my plan will work.

Rather Watch Em Melbillikot had the honor to pull the lever.

Almost instantly a field of grass and trees and Glumpwrongs and a kangaroo dropped into the diggings we made near the old Ugathville.

A huge cloud of dust rose into the air, and we felt the air shift as a great gust blew down the hallways leading to Ugathville.

That is alarming because the doors should have held back the earth!

Within moments the earth fell back to the ground and the dust began to settle. I saw four neat holes where the falling dirt punched through the ceilings of chambers below the diggings we made.

It was unexpected and will present a design challenge as I draw plans for the next dig.

Nonetheless it is very encouraging to see the collapse clear so much land.

Now we must wait for the next Murk. When I lay in the moss and the fungus and the queen made me understand, this was the question that now must be answered. The question of the Fiendish Murk.

1st Moonstone

On the first day of winter in the year 252 I ordered all remaining bedrooms of Ugathville cleaned and abandoned.

Once this place was a shameful place of filth where good dwarves were consigned to bad conditions by religious bigots. Later it was held and claimed by those who revere Ugath in remembrance of their segregation. But now it is time all dwarves of Bronzestabbed lived together. We will never forget those years but the digging will endanger any who remained there and we must dig.

The miners can begin. I have reinstated mining privileges to all the experienced miners.

2nd Moonstone
Because we are removing bedrooms I ordered new ones carved to ensure sufficient space for everyone.

4th Moonstone
I received a report that is astonishing. We are out of food!?

I checked reports and saw a huge number of meals remain but are somehow inaccessible.

We also should have enormous stockpiles of raw plants of which five thousand are available.

Yet we only have four plump helmets in the kitchen and almost nothing else besides tallow that can be cooked and is not booze.

I ordered a boar and horse butchered but there must be severe problems with farming to have run out.

I instructed the best farmers to have no other labors except ProfessorGroove who is the chief medical dwarf may still perform medical procedures.

Also I told the farmers to plant another field plump helmets year round although current fields do not look already fully planted to me.

Finally I ordered edible plants in the courtyards harvested.

Thereafter I undertook to audit the books. Somewhere in Bronzestabbed, hundreds of meals are hidden. I am determined I will find them.
