There's a 55mph freeway near where i live and if i do 50, everybody
passes me. But if i do 60 very few do. The deadly criminal speed loons
like to tell us that EVERYBODY DOES 20 MPH OVER THE SPEED LIMIT, but
that is not true. The speeders just say that so they don't have to
face the fact that they are abnornal and murderous freaks!!!!!!

Thousands of brave men and women are serving in Iraq.
Many of them come back maimed or dead.

Here at home, millions of self-serving blonde female drivers who yak on the
cell phone while they drive themeselves to the mall are allowed to survive.
These people will never stop, and never learn.

Why don't we send every one of these stupid people over to Iraq, and save
our generous and brave soldiers.

Try I-5 in CA. At 60 you will be passed by at least 90% of traffic. You will
stay with the flow at 75-80. At 85 you'll be at average speed. At little over
90 you're risking it, but probably perfectly OK for a short time -- and with
overcast prohibiting police airplanes.

Been there. Done that. Reality. No horns. No lane changing. Everybody
paying attention...

How many times must i explain this? There are no "accidents" only
violent crashes caused by reckless psychopathic drivers.

Maybe half. Remainder is 65. In either case, average speed is well over
posted limit. Function of unrealistic speed limits is mostly $, not safety.

No. There are lots of accidents. They're accidents because the people
involved didn't intend for them to happen.

Also, no one need be speeding in order for some of them to happen.

So, in your happy little world, absolutely no municipality anywhere
ever underposted a segement of road? Because, you know, if a road is
underposted and someone drives the correct, safe design speed of the
road, he/she then becomes a dreaded 'speeder', even if only exceeding
the (underposted, remember) speed limit by 5 mph...

Roads such as South St, in Newark (fairly new divided freeway, decent
sight lines, 25mph limit) or the new Doremus Ave. Bridge (wide 4 lane
bridge, good sight lines, 25mph), or the West Shore Expressway on
Staten Island (fairly level interstate style divided highway, excellent
sight lines, no tight curves, wide shoulders, 50mph - this applies to
the Clearview, the LIE, the Staten Island Expressway, sections of the
Belt, etc. again all 50mph), or 40mph on the divided highway section of
440 at the Bayonne/Jersey City border, or...- well, you get the idea -
you believe none of these roads are underposted, and hence the drivers
on them are all the dreaded, evil 'speeders' (that word which is so
badly misused by the media...)

No, most people are smart enough to know that speed isn't the issue;
it's the inability to control one's vehicle. Of course, most people,

That's my experience too. Nearly everyone does just 5+ mph over the
speed limit.

You really need to learn to read for comprehension.

Actually, we've never discussed that. And it's not true. As has already
been studied, people pretty much drive at the same speed *regardless* of
the posted limits. There are a small number who feel they absolutely
obey limits even when they're obviously stupid, but that doesn't mean
you can't approach the appropriate limit asymptotically:

Measure the speeds that people use on a stretch of road. If more than
15% are exceeding the posted limit, raise it 5 mph. Check it again in 60
days and repeat as necessary.

(Though your reply has _nothing_ to do with what Nate said, or the
question you originally asked for that matter...)

Sounds like your speed limits need to be raised at *least* 5 MPH then,
doesn't it?

Boiling? You're projecting.

I know that being a speeder is the same as being a child abuser? How
would I know that? First, I know thwe difference. Second, that *you*
project this way tells me that *you* think they are the same. You
really do need help.
And, no, I don't think speeding is nearly as dangerous as you say it
is, while, according to your own words, *you* speed yourself.
You are seriously disturbed, and tell us so more each time you post.

Most people are speeders. Some aren't, but they are a minority. Of course,
of the 90% of us who do exceed the speed limit, most exceed it by
relatively small amounts. In the UK I mostly drove 5-10mph over the limit,
and here in the states it is more like 15-20, but that's because the speed
limits are lower, not because I drive faster. Again the type of road makes
a difference.

There seem to be a disproportionate number of non-speeders on Usenet, but
how do we know if they are truthful? After all, "nobody knows you're a dog
on the Internet"! Maybe they don't speed because the're not old enough to
drive?
