Embracing a Legacy of Strength

Embracing a Legacy of Strength

When I get a break from work for holidays, I love to travel, but in that joy, my interests lie in resting, taking off my shoes to get a good massage, and walking by the beach or any bay area. The scenic view and calmness of the water are beautiful and soothing to the soul, and you are likely to get some good seafood (one of my favorites).

On the other hand, my husband is very enthusiastic, adventurous, and a great historian who is always ready for outdoor activities, so we have grown to appreciate and balance our unique nature. We agreed to the first few days for me while for the subsequent ones, I get to join in exploring history. This arrangement turned out great as I now look forward to museums or historic sites and stories about where we visit.

I realized that the history subjects we may have been taught in school are never enough. I have become more empathetic and learned about cultures, perceptions, individuality, unique occurrences and stories, and how they have developed and transformed over the years.

The month of February is dedicated to celebrating the achievements, impacts, contributions, and history of Black individuals and communities. We recognize the central role that Black people have played in shaping the world, acknowledge their accomplishments, and reflect on the challenges they have faced throughout history.

"The relevance of February goes back to 1926, when ASALH’s founder Dr. Carter G. Woodson first established “Negro History Week” during the second week of February. And why that week? Because it encompasses the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass—both men being great American symbols of freedom. However, Woodson never confined Negro History to a week.  His life’s work and the mission of ASALH since its founding in 1915 represent a living testimony to the year-round and year-after-year study of African American historyWhat Carter G. Woodson would say about the continued celebrations is unknown, but he would smile at all honest efforts to make black history a field of serious study and provide the public with thoughtful celebrations"- The Association for the Study of African American Life and History
