JOHOR BARU: Johor police want the public to stop speculating on the attack involving Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) midfielder Safiq Rahim so they can investigate the matter in-depth.

State police chief Comm M. Kumar said the attack was an isolated incident unrelated to cases involving football players in other states.

“The victim came forward to lodge a police report after his vehicle was attacked on Jalan Thompson on Tuesday (May 7) night.

“He was heading home when he noticed two men on a motorcycle (approaching). One suspect then hit the right side of the rear windscreen with a hammer.

“The victim could not identify the suspects, who managed to flee, (nor did he take note of) the motorcycle's plate number.

“I would like to stress that this incident is an isolated case and is not related to any other incident.

"We will conduct a thorough investigation and see where it leads,” he told reporters after the state police contingent Hari Raya Open House here on Wednesday (May 8).

Comm Kumar added that they were looking for any CCTVs in the area that might have captured footage of the incident.

He added that police will also take extra precautions for the Charity Shield match between Selangor and JDT at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on Friday (May 10).

“More than 1,500 officers and policemen will be deployed during the game to ensure safety and traffic flow.

"I give an assurance of safety to the public and the players,” he said.

Asked if the football players would be escorted, Comm Kumar said it was procedure to accompany all teams travelling between their hotel and the stadium.

He added that Safiq's case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for causing mischief.

Former national captain Safiq escaped unhurt after two men hit his rear windscreen in Johor Baru on Tuesday night.

The 36-year-old revealed the incident on his social media account by posting a copy of the police report and a photo of his damaged car.

The incident came days after national winger Faisal Halim, who is also known as Mickey, suffered an acid attack in Kota Damansara on Sunday (May 5).

On May 2, national winger and Terengganu player Akhyar Rashid was assaulted and robbed near his residence in Kuala Terengganu.
