In his call for an additional wild-card team in the Major League Baseball playoffs, Sam Smith’s reasoning is flawed and in most seasons would result in situations that would be contrary to his logic (Tribune, Sept.22).
Indeed, in a number of seasons, including this year’s American League race, the wild-card team may have the second-best record in the league, whereas the division winner may be in a tight race decided on the last day.
