When Andrew Wilder first saw Swedish Modern furniture, he felt as if he had “discovered buried treasure.”

We had the same feeling when we visited his new Svenska Mobler store at 516 N. Wells. St.

It didn’t fit what we thought Swedish Modern design would be like. So we wanted to know more about Svenska Mobler (Swedish furniture from 1840 to 1950).

This is Wilder’s second store in the United States. His first opened four years ago in Los Angeles.

Svenska Mobler offers Swedish furniture designs with a focus on early 20th Century Modernism.

One reason why these furniture styles will be new to many Americans is because they were made for the Swedish market, not for export.

While living and working in Stockholm in the mid-1980s, Wilder discovered these designs and became smitten.

He chose his River North location because of its proximity to The Merchandise Mart. He also liked “the boutique feeling of an independent business district.”

Wilder’s new showroom has an inviting, open and spacious L-shaped layout. The 1,700-square-foot corner space has two sides of windows that show several vignettes of cabinetry with upholstered designs.

Prices range from $500 for a 1969 mercury glass Helena lamp to $12,000 for a pair of Swedish Art Deco-era paneled chairs in bleached mahogany and Ultrasuede.

Aeta furniture is leaving its River North location for Tinley Park, Ill.

This is sad news for loyal customers, but good news if you’re looking for great finds at a good price.

From now until March 31, Aeta is offering a 50 to 70 percent sale on everything at its 507 N. LaSalle St. store.
