District 15 Elementary School officials said Tuesday that a student from Hilltop School has come forward and said he may have brought the knife found on the floor of a school bus last week.

The boy on Monday admitted the 10-inch knife “may have been his,” Hilltop Principal Denise Welter said Tuesday. The alleged admission followed a talk by Welter with all students who ride the route on which the knife was found.

McHenry police were called with the new information. The child remained home from school Tuesday, pending completion of the police investigation, Welter said. Police confirm they talked to a 10-year-old boy Monday about the incident.

“We’re still trying to figure out what his intention was,” said Police Lt. Raymond Donahue.

The stainless-steel knife, with a wooden handle, was found on the floor of a District 15 school bus Friday while it was transporting children home from school.
