A man who stole a $1,500 puppy from a Naperville pet store will find it’s not worth much without its paperwork, police said Sunday.

The 2-month-old Pomeranian was taken Friday morning by a man age 18 to 22 and about 5 foot 8, Sgt. Ken Keating said. The puppy has a microchip embedded beneath its skin that will help police and its owner, Petland, identify it if it is recovered.

“It’s considered retail theft,” Keating said. “A shoplifting. Purebred dogs are expensive.

“The downside for this guy is that he doesn’t have the paperwork.”

Keating speculated that the dognapper took the puppy for himself, a friend or family member, rather than to sell.
