New York Rangers captain Mark Messier was added to the NHL’s Eastern Conference All-Star team Thursday, four days after his 43rd birthday.

On the other side of the ice he’ll see Columbus’ Rich Nash, making his All-Star debut at 19.

Messier will become the third oldest All-Star when he suits up Feb. 8 in St. Paul. Nash, the NHL’s goal leader, will be the first teenage All-Star since Jaromir Jagr and Owen Nolan in 1992.

Nash will be 19 years, 237 days on game day, making him the youngest All-Star since Wendel Clark in 1986.

Devils push for Newark

The chief executive of the New Jersey Devils wants the state to help build an arena in Newark to keep the Stanley Cup champions in the Garden State after their Meadowlands lease expires in 2007.

The request Thursday by Lou Lamoriello came less than 24 hours after the owners of the New Jersey Nets announced they had reached agreement to sell the NBA team, which will move to Brooklyn.

Thornton has surgery

Bruins captain Joe Thornton had surgery on his broken right cheekbone Thursday and is expected to miss at least two more games. Thornton, also the team’s leading scorer, was injured Monday in a fight with Eric Lindros of the Rangers.

Flyers’ Keith Primeau had 2 assists just hours after being named an All-Star. Mark Recchi, John LeClair had power-play goals for Flyers, who entered 3-for-35 with man advantage.

Roman Turek stopped 24 shots to earn shutout and Shean Donovan and Matthew Lombardi each scored 2 goals. Flames 6-1-3-1 vs. Predators at Saddledome.

Tampa Bay 3 at Edmonton 2

Vincent Lecavalier scored a goal and added an assist for Tampa Bay, which took a 3-1 lead with a 2-goal second period. Oilers play 6 of next 7 at home.

Wings’ Brett Hull ended longest scoring drought of career with first goal in 21 games, and defenseman Mathieu Schneider had 2 goals against his former team. Curtis Joseph made 25 saves.

Phoenix 2 at San Jose 1

Ladislav Nagy scored go-ahead goal and Coyotes snapped 5-game winless streak and Sharks’ 4-game win streak. Brian Boucher (34 saves) got first win since 5-game shutout spree.
