History took place Monday at the Olympics when 13-year-old skateboarder Momiji Nishiya won a gold medal for Team Japan.
The win made Nishiya the youngest athlete to medal for Japan, and one of the youngest Olympic gold medalists ever, CBS News reported.
Monday’s women’s street competition in Tokyo marked the first time the event has been held at the Olympics.
“I welled up in tears because I was beyond happy,” Nishiya said Monday after her victory, according to Reuters.
Fellow 13-year-old Rayssa Leal of Brazil won the silver medal on Monday. Leal is the youngest Brazilian to medal at the Olympics.
Sixteen-year-old Funa Nakayama of Japan won the bronze medal.
Japan also won the men’s street skateboarding event, with Yuto Horigome taking home the gold for the country on Sunday. Brazil won the silver in that event, too, with Kelvin Hoefler finishing second Sunday.
The youngest gold medalist in Olympics history is United States diver Marjorie Gestring. She achieved the feat in 1936, when she was 13, and just a little bit younger than Nishiya.
