Police late Tuesday arrested a mother and son who left two cats, four kittens and a dog without food or water for seven days in a rented Barrington home, according to reports.

Linda Truckenbrod, 47, and her son, Robert, 19, were charged with seven counts of cruelty to animals, police said. They were arrested at their new home in the 200 block of Sioux Avenue, Carpentersville.

Barrington police rescued the animals Tuesday from the home the Truckenbrods had rented in the 500 block of Concord Lane. The cats were confined to a utility room, and the dog, a sheltie, had the run of the house, police Cpl. Kevin Croke said.

Police were called after a neighbor complained of terrible smells, which turned out to be feces, coming from the house, Croke said.

The Barrington Animal Hospital, where the animals are being kept, said they were extremely underfed and dirty but otherwise healthy.

The Truckenbrods are to appear Dec. 7 in the Rolling Meadows branch of Cook County Circuit Court.
