Carlos Baerga drove in the only run in the first game and hit one of Cleveland’s three home runs in the nightcap as the Indians swept the double-header.

The Indians, winners of 12 their last 16 games, improved the best start in franchise history to 48-21. Oakland has lost nine of 12 overall and eight straight against Cleveland.

Jose Mesa finished off both games, giving him 23 saves in 23 chances.

In the first game, four Cleveland pitchers combined on a five-hitter for the Indians’ major league-leading eighth shutout. Two of the pitchers were recently recalled from the minors, including Alan Embree, who got his first career win by retiring the only batter he faced.

Manny Ramirez and Jim Thome also homered for the Indians in the second game, helping Charles Nagy to his fourth consecutive win.
