Diana Ross hasn’t had a hit single since 1984’s “Missing You.” That’s hardly showing supreme love for pop’s original “Dreamgirl” diva. Unfortunately, Miss Ross’ first studio album of the millennium will keep her hit days far behind her. This schmaltzy, unimaginative collection of love song remakes finds Ross’ voice in good shape, but she feels as removed from the material as that CD cover photo is removed from reality. “As if” that airbrushed shot was taken post-1980. If only Ross showed she cared as much about the music as getting the photo just-so. Given all the attention “Dreamgirls” has thrown on the Supremes and Ross’ career, the time would have be so right for the singer to score with an event record. This isn’t it.
