The leader of India’s Hindu-nationalist opposition Tuesday voiced concern over the growth rate among minority Muslims and Christians, urging more family planning.

Federal officials Monday released the results of the first-ever census based on religion; it showed that the Muslim and Christian populations grew faster than Hindus in India between 1991 and 2001.

The data are a “cause of grave concern for all those who think of India’s unity and integrity,” M. Venkaiah Naidu, president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP, said in the southern city of Bangalore.
