Maybe we should call these the Cub Days of Summer. On Thursday I watched Richie Sexson of the Brewers score from first base on a single that didn’t even draw a throw.

Anyone thinking the Cubs were anything more than pretenders was fooled again. It’s just unfortunate that we fans keep believing longer than the team makes a decent effort. A team in a pennant race that comes to the park unprepared to play (as the Cubs did Thursday) does not deserve the loyalty it receives from the foolhardy fans who continually fill the park.

Even if Sammy Sosa brings them back from the dead once again, the players and coaching staff can reflect on days like Thursday when they are watching the playoffs on TV in October.
