NEWARK -- A manhunt is under way in Weequahic Park for two suspects believed to have been involved in a fatal vehicle accident this morning, authorities said.

Investigators are still gathering details of the incidents leading up to the collision, Loriquet said.

Elizabeth police started to pursue three suspects after seeing them break into cars earlier this morning, Newark Det. Todd McClendon said. One suspect was apprehended in Elizabeth after a foot chase.

The other two suspects fled in a Mercury Mountaineer sport utility vehicle, Loriquet said. After they collided with the Dodge Neon in Newark, the two suspects are believed to have fled into the park on foot.

They were last seen in the area of Elizabeth and Custer Avenues, McClendon said.

Loriquet added that authorities have been receiving phone calls from early morning joggers reporting sightings of the suspects.

Authorities have not released a description of the suspects.
