This year NASK includes an online preparatory course, and a residential course with two levels of instruction.

Online Course

Monday, April 15 - Monday, June 3, 2024.

Every Monday, 8:30-9:30 PM USA Eastern Time.

Cost: $90

Instructor: Vince Allison

Language Level: “Post-basic”.  Learners should have already studied a basic course, such as on Duolingo or Lernu.net.  The course will help polish grammatical understanding and provide a chance to read, hear, and speak the language with others, guided by a fluent speaker.

If you sign up for both the online and residential courses at the same time, there is no cost for the online course.

Residential Course

Sunday, June 30 - Saturday, July 6, 2024

William Peace University, Raleigh, North Carolina

Students arrive Sunday. Classes are Monday-Friday, morning and afternoon. Students depart Saturday morning.

Fees include instruction, lodging, and three daily meals, beginning with dinner on Sunday and ending with breakfast on Saturday.

Single-Occupancy Cost: $900. Includes lodging in single-occupancy dorm room with shared suite bathroom

Double-Occupancy Cost: $650. Includes loding in double-occupancy dorm room with shared suite bathroom

Online Preparatory Course - Vince Allison

About the course:

Are you learning Esperanto with an application like Duolingo and would like to try something more active and interactive? Maybe you want to consolidate what you're learning or use the language with other people. If so, this course is for you. Join us, and we will continue our Esperanto journey and start using the language in more useful ways than "I'm fine because I have a duck". We will expand and re-examine our vocabulary with annoying word pairs and fake friends. Homework and discussions will relate to real, modern cultural items in Esperanto, such as articles, podcasts, and even YouTube videos.

About Vince: Vince is an active Esperantist who has participated in multiple in-person events such as NASK, the US Landa Kongreso, and the Universala Kongreso. He is on multiple committees for Esperanto-USA and has created prize winning films for their Usona Bona Film-Festivalo. He has also taught beginner level courses for the London Esperanto club.

Intermediate Level  - Rafa Nogueras

About the course:

During this course Rafa will help you expand your knowledge of Esperanto and its culture by teaching proverbs, common expressions and useful grammar. We will read, write, hold discussions in small groups, and do fun activities to use the language together. The course is mainly aimed at people who are already able to understand the language well enough, but want more opportunities to use it.

About Rafa:

Rafa enjoys reading (and occasionally even writing) in Esperanto.  His writings have won awards in the annual Literary Competitions Beletraj Konkursoj of UEA, in the International Short Story Contest (INK) of the Literatura Akademio de Esperanto, and in the literary contest of the Bialystok Esperanto Society.

He is an “uncle” in the Ekparolu! program, teaches Esperanto for the North London Esperanto Club, and was a part of the team that managed the Esperanto course in Duolingo (where he mainly provided the voice reading the various phrases). He is also co-editor of the Mikronovelo column of Usona Esperantisto, and he himself has authored many of the stories there. 

Upper Level - Birke Dockhorn

About the course:

In the high-level course you can expand your general and specialized vocabularies. And you can improve your capacity to talk about interesting topics suitable for the C1 level in the CEFR framework (high-level; working fluency): lifelong learning, health, family life, and technical progress. I hope that we will energetically exchange information and that I'll support your self-expression.

Through exercises that activate your language skills, I'll introduce you to words and concepts that relate to the theme, accompany you on your journey throughout the terrain of this new vocabulary, and will help you define things and also describe them in appropriate detail. When it's necessary, I'll discuss grammatical topics. I'll especially focus on your capacity to speak, but naturally we'll also touch on the other necessary skills of language: listening, reading, and writing. Be welcome!

About Birke:

Birke has spoken Esperanto for more than 30 years. She received a master's degree in Korean language and culture in Berlin. She also studied the pedagogy of the German language for second-language learners, which has been her primary work since receiving the degree. She taught German in many institutions, both at home and abroad: from 2004-2009 at Hankuk University in Seoul, South Korea. From 2016 to the present she's focused on teaching German to nurses, doctors, and other medical professionals. Currently she works in a large medical center and assists non-native professionals in their attempts to integrate their medical knowledge and the german language. She has also worked on the project deutsch.info, an international project funded by the European Union for learners of German.

After coming home to Germany, Birke has lived with her Swedish husband Bertilo in her native region of rural northern Germany. In their (primarily Esperanto-speaking) daily life at home, the two children and many hobbies (not to mention work) have reduced her recent activity in the Esperanto movement. However, she has continued to contribute to some projects: the handbook for teaching Esperanto, writing exercises to accompany the book La teorio Nakamura in Lernu.net, teaching at SES, and teaching at NASK in 2005, 20087, 2011, 2012, and 2019.

If time permits (or concerts require it), Birke is a skilled flutist and plays alongside her husband in the Esperanto-speaking duo Duo Bemolo and with international friends in groups that play the folk music of many nations. If there's additional time for hobbies, she likes all sorts of crafts, especially origami, knitting, crocheting, and baking. For health's sake, she tries to regularly practice Qi Gong, swim, and hike with her dogs throughout the countryside.

Studentoj alvenos dimanĉon. Lecionoj okazos de lundo ĝis vendredo, matene kaj posttagmeze. Studentoj foriros sabaton matene.

Kotizoj inkluzivas instruadon, loĝadon, kaj tri manĝojn tage - la unua manĝo estos vespermanĝo en dimanĉo, kaj la lasta estos matenmanĝo en sabato.

Pri la kurso:

Ĉu vi lernas Esperanton per aplikaĵo kiel Duolingo kaj ŝatus provi ion pli aktivan kaj interagan? Eble vi volas plifirmigi tion, kion vi lernas, aŭ uzi la lingvon kun aliaj homoj. Se jes, ĉi tiu kurso estas por vi. Aliĝu, kaj ni daŭrigos nian Esperanto-vojaĝon kaj komencos uzi la lingvon en manieroj pli utilaj ol “Mi fartas bone ĉar mi havas anason”. Ni vastigos kaj reekzamenos nian vortprovizon per ĝenaj vortparoj kaj falsaj amikoj. Hejmtaskoj kaj diskutoj rilatos al veraj, modernaj kulturaĵoj en Esperanto, kiel artikoloj, podkastoj, kaj eĉ jutubaj filmetoj.

Pri Vinĉjo:

Vinĉjo estas aktiva esperantisto, kiu partoprenis en multaj eventoj kiel NASK, la Landa Kongreso de Esperanto-USA, kaj la Universala Kongreso. Li estas en pluraj komitatoj por Esperanto-USA kaj kreis filmojn por la Usona Bona Film-Festivalo. Cetere, li instruis porkomencantajn kursojn por la Londona Esperanto-klubo.

Pri la kurso:

“Ni lernu pli pri Esperanto... kaj ni amuziĝu!”

Dum ĉi tiu kurso mi helpos vin pligrandigi viajn sciojn pri Esperanto kaj ties kulturo per instruado de proverboj, oftaj esprimoj kaj utilaj gramatikaĵoj. Ni legos, verkos, okazigos diskutojn en etaj grupoj, kaj faros amuzajn aktivaĵojn por kune uzi la lingvon. La kurso ĉefe celas homojn kiuj jam kapablas sufiĉe bone kompreni la lingvon, sed volas pli da okazoj por uzi ĝin.

Pri Rafa:

Rafa ŝatas legi (kaj foje eĉ verki!) en Esperanto.  Liaj verkoj estis premiitaj en la Belartaj Konkursoj de UEA, en la Internacia Novelo-Konkurso (INK) de la Literatura Akademio de Esperanto, kaj en la literatura konkurso de la Bjalistoka Esperanto-Societo.

Li estas “onklo” en la programo Ekparolu!, instruas la lingvon kadre de la Nord-Londona Esperanto-klubo, kaj estss parto de la teamo kiu prizorgss la Esperanto-kurson en Duolingo (kie li ĉefe voĉlegis la frazojn). Cetere li kunredaktas la rubrikon Mikronovelo de Usona Esperantisto, kaj li mem verkis multajn el la rakontoj tie.

Pri Birke:

Birke, esperantistino de pli ol 30-jaroj, siatempe magistriĝis pri koreologio en Berlino. Unu el ŝiaj kromaj studfakoj estis la instruado de la germana lingvo al eksterlandanoj, kaj pri tiu ŝi ĉefe okupiĝas ĝis nun. Ŝi instruis la germanan en multaj diversaj institucioj, inter alie eksterlande: de 2004 – 2009 ĉe Hankuk-Universitato en en Seulo, Sud-Koreujo. Ekde 2016 ŝi plejparte koncentriĝis pri la germana por flegistoj kaj kuracistoj kaj laboras nun en granda kliniko, por helpi al eksterlandaj kunlaborantoj lingve integriĝi. Ŝi kunlaboris ankaŭ en la internacia EU-projekto deutsch.info, kiu kreis retpaĝon kun informoj kaj lingvokurso por lernantoj de la germana.

Reveninte hejmen el Sud-Koreujo ŝi ekloĝis kun sia sveda edzo Bertilo en sia hejma kampara regiono en norda Germanujo. En la (ĉefe esperantlingva) ĉiutaga hejma vivo kun du infanoj kaj multaj ŝatokupoj apud la laboro, la agado en Esperantujo malpliiĝis. Sed jen ankaŭ ekzemploj de instruado kaj kelkaj projektoj por Esperanto: kunlaboro en la "Manlibro por instruado de Esperanto", verkado de la ekzercoj por la kurso "la teorio Nakamura" en lernu.net, instruado en SES dum kelkaj jaroj kaj instruado en NASK en 2005, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2019.

Se la tempo permesas (aŭ koncertaj planoj postulas), ŝi muzikas per sia fluto kun Bertilo en la Esperanta duopo Duo Bemolo kaj kun regionaj amikoj en  rondoj de internacia popolmuziko. Se restos eĉ pli da tempo, ŝi ŝatas manlabori kaj krei aferojn pere de origamio, trikado, kroĉetado kaj bakado. Por la sano ŝi provas regule fari ĉigongon, naĝi kaj promenadi kun siaj hundoj tra la kamparo.
