MLWGS Research Program MENTOR Interest Form
Thank you for your interest in the MLWGS scientific research program! This year, our program aims to support students in finding mentors to do independent research, writing papers and preparing presentations, and applying to state and international competitions.

Last year, we had 7 or 8 students find mentorships by themselves and do projects on topics including stroke imaging, machine learning, and neurological diseases. The process of doing research, writing papers, and applying to science fairs is extremely rigorous and difficult to do without a support system, so it is crucial that we are able to reach PARENTS OR ALUMNI WITH EXPERIENCE IN STEM who would be willing to donate some of their time and expertise.

There are two different options for the level of involvement you can have with this program as a mentor:
1) Process Guide — this involves less commitment. Process guides will help edit students' final papers, give them background information/knowledge on topics, and help review their presentations before they attend science fairs.
2) Project Mentor — this involves direct, one-on-one mentorship in a research project with a student. If you choose this option, you will likely be paired with a student interested in your field of work and help them to design a project, conduct the research, and guide them in processing the results/conclusions. This would be the best option for you if you work in a STEM field and are currently conducting research that you believe would benefit from having a student intern or researcher who will then write their own paper and present the conclusions.

This form is NOT binding. After you fill out this form, we will reach out to you via email within a week and provide more comprehensive information, as well as ask if you would like to continue with the process.

Thank you so much! We couldn't do this without you. Feel free to contact Annabel Tang at 23atang@gsgis.k12.va.us with any questions or concerns. If your child is interested in participating in this program, please have them fill out the student form at tinyurl.com/mwresearch

Note: We ask that all respondents complete this form by Friday, October 8. If you are still interested in being a mentor after that deadline, please email Annabel Tang.
