Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, May 12

In a vote that ended May 12, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week from high school sports action through May 7.

Winter and spring winners through April 7 should have received certificates through the athletic departments at this point.

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports. Here are this week's winners.

Ohio baseball team of the week: Miami Valley Christian Academy – Miami Valley Christian beat Seven Hills 10-3 and 10-0 in a pair of games before a 22-1 blowout at Finneytown.

Northern Kentucky baseball team of the week: Bellevue – After entering last week with four wins, Bellevue added three more to its total, topping Dayton, Calvary Christian and Holmes.

Ohio softball team of the week: Mason – The Comets finished their regular season on a seven-game winnings streak, including last week’s wins over Lakota East, Hamilton, Colerain, Middletown and Kings.

Northern Kentucky softball team of the week: Dayton – The Lady Devils improved to over .500 by beating Ludlow 20-4 and Villa Madonna 5-1.

Boys spring team of the week: La Salle volleyball – The Lancers wrapped up the regular season with a five-set win over Loveland, finishing as winners in four-straight matches and seven of eight.

Girls spring team of the week: Walnut Hills lacrosse – The Eagles beat Kings 15-8 on May 4, finishing the ECC season undefeated to win the conference for the first time in program history.

Ohio big-school baseball player of the week: Brandon Stidham, Oak Hills – The junior went 3-for-5 with a double, five RBIs and scored twice in Oak Hills’ 13-8 win over Lakota East May 4.

Ohio small-school baseball player of the week: R.J. Hudson, St. Bernard – The junior tossed seven innings of three-hit, one-run ball with 11 strikeouts in St. Bernard’s 12-1 win over Hughes May 1. At the plate, Hudson went 2-for-3 with a double, two walks, an RBI and scored four times.

Northern Kentucky baseball player of the week: Cory Henson, Conner – In five games, he went 8-for-18 with 11 RBIs, five runs scored and two home runs.

Ohio big-school softball player of the week: Audrey Gildea, Mount Notre Dame – The sophomore, who leads the Girls Greater Catholic League in earned run average and runs batted in, got the win Monday over St. Ursula 12-2. In that game, she went 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Ohio small-school softball player of the week: Julia Tamai, Seven Hills – The senior shortstop helped the Stingers to a 3-0 record for the week. She scored 10 runs and had 9 RBIs in the three games, including going 4-for-4 at the plate and hitting two home runs (one a grand slam and one a solo homer) against St. Bernard-Elmwood Place.

Northern Kentucky softball player of the week: Jayci Kremer, Campbell County – She went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored in a win over Mason County.

Ohio boys big-school lacrosse player of the week: Garrett Kessling, Oak Hills – The junior had a hat trick in the 16-4 loss to Lakota West May 3 and had two goals and two assists in the 6-5 win over Seven Hills May 6.

Ohio boys small-school lacrosse player of the week: Coleman Jeffers, Wyoming – The senior had four goals, three assists, four ground balls and two caused turnovers in the 16-3 win over Clinton-Massie.

Ohio girls big-school lacrosse player of the week: Sydney Huseman, Mercy McAuley – The senior had two goals, six assists, three ground balls, five draw controls, three caused turnovers and one interception to help the Wolves beat Edgewood 16-6 May 4.

Ohio girls small-school lacrosse player of the week: Lily Middendorf, Roger Bacon – She had 31 saves in goal in two wins - 12-6 over Princeton May 4 and 9-7 over Cooper (Kentucky).

Northern Kentucky boys lacrosse player of the week: Eric Wong, Cooper – The sophomore had four goals, two assists and six ground balls in the 11-6 win over Villa Madonna.

Northern Kentucky girls lacrosse player of the week: Alexa Luckhardt, Cooper – The senior had three goals and two assists in the13-8 win over Dixie Heights May 1.

Ohio boys singles tennis player of the week: Jacob Eddingfield, Elder – The first singles competitor overcame a loss in his first set to take a match against Anderson.

Ohio boys doubles tennis team of the week: Luke Meade/Sam Meade, Elder – The Meades won 6-4, 6-3 in a first doubles match as Elder topped Anderson 5-0.

Northern Kentucky boys tennis player of the week: Griffin Derry, Dixie Heights – He defeated his opponent from St. Henry to help Dixie Heights win the match 3-2.

Northern Kentucky girls tennis player of the week: Bethany Arnett, Conner – She defeated her opponent from Ryle 6-0, 6-1, and her opponent from Scott 6-2, 6-1.

Ohio boys track and field athlete of the week: Jonathan Chaney, Clark Montessori – He won the discus at Winton Woods with a throw of 124 feet.

Ohio girls track and field athlete of the week: Halle Hehemann, Bethel-Tate – She won the discus at Milford with a school-record throw of 119 feet, nine inches.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys track and field athlete of the week: Luke Erdman, Beechwood – He broke his own 100-meter school record with a sprint of 11.30 seconds. He also broke the 200-meter school record with a time of 23.14 seconds.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls track and field athlete of the week: Kaitlyn Strange, Campbell County – She won the 800 meters at Scott in 2:29.18, and the 1,600 meters in 5:22.30.

Boys volleyball player of the week: Jacob Goldberg, Lakota West – Goldberg 13 kills combined in a pair of 3-0 wins over Middletown Christian and Milford while also combining for 10 service aces.
