This posting is for an Engineering Technician I position located in the Winston-Salem Construction 1 Unit.  This position assists engineers and higher-level technicians in the implementation and administration of roadway and structure construction projects awarded to private contractors. Position is responsible for assistance on several projects categorized from minor to complex. Provides inspection of every phase of a construction project to ensure it is built according to plans and specifications in a timely and cost-effective manner. Ability to conduct routine inspections for compliance with contract agreements, standard/codes, permit, and specifications. Daily duties will include calculations, computation, and computer/iPad data entry.  POS # 60021020

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction, construction inspection, and/or construction surveying. 
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of computer equipment, iPad and software.

  • Knowledge of standards and specifications and plan reading experience. 

Additional Expectations:
Ability to establish and maintain positive lines of communication between other technicians, engineers, contractors, and the public. Should be able to effectively communicate in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner. Ability to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards on construction sites including heights, highway traffic, and traversing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction. Must be able to perform moderate physical activity including but not limited to walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be able to work nights and weekends as required, to any assigned project within the Division. Must apply safety philosophy and program to all operations. Safety toe shoes required. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle.  
 
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate’s degree in civil engineering technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
 
If there are no qualified candidates remaining in the applicant pool who meet the minimum Education and Experience or Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for the position, the agency may consider for this position, a trainee who does not meet the minimum requirements. Salary for a trainee may be set at a lower level than the classification salary range and recruitment range that is listed in the posting with the salary being adjusted up accordingly when the trainee has obtained the necessary additional education and experience to fully meet the minimum qualifications as outlined in the classification specification.
