Giving Tuesday is the global day of action for doing good on the first Tuesday after Black Friday and Cyber Monday. A time for charities and social organisations to bring their work and goals to the attention of as many people as possible. #GivingTuesday marks the beginning of a traditional period of giving. The scholarship was founded in memory of Maria Peters, one of the first supporters of Java Village, who sadly passed away in 2016. In honour of her, her family took the initiative, together with Java Village, to establish this special grant for excellent students. Covid-19 restrictions are still in place in the village. This means that schools are open but under restrictions. Pupils attend the school twice a week in two sessions of two hours each with a maximum of fifteen students per lesson. On the other days lessons are given on-line. The vaccination programme is on track for everyone above 12 years of age. All the teachers at the SMP (Sekolah Menengah Pertama, junior high school) have been vaccinated.

It is nice to see that through the Learning Centre in the village, students who have graduated help the younger ones at school with their on-line lessons. The Learning Centre (Rumah Belajar Cisago) was founded by former SaS students in 2017 specifically to help the youngsters of the village with among other things, their computer and social skills and their command of English. Java Village has been able to donate several laptops to the centre over the years.

Please do not forget our Sponsor a Student project. This ongoing project supports young pupils so that they can continue their education after primary school. The village doesn't have a secondary school and many families cannot afford the cost of going to a school outside the village. The Sponsor a Student project helps these families. Since the beginning of the project in 2008 Java Village has already helped 120 pupils to go to a junior high school. You can support a student by donating €12,50 per month or €150 per year.
