The Geotechnical Engineering Unit provides the geologic, geotechnical, and geoenvironmental engineering aspects of planning, design, construction, and maintenance of North Carolina highways. The Unit collects and analyzes subsurface information and provides geotechnical engineering designs and recommendations for roadway slopes, embankments, and subgrades, and foundations of roadways and structures to ensure stability and cost-effective construction. The Unit assists in the construction and maintenance of roadways and structures and investigates and develops a remediation plan for geotechnical or geoenvironmental problems. The Unit investigates known and potentially contaminated properties to identify the presence and provide removal instructions for hazardous material and underground storage tanks. The Unit also develops and evaluates new products and is responsible for the review of geotechnical designs and construction submittals from contractors and private engineering firms.

The Geotechnical Engineering Unit is looking for a Driller Assistant.

In this position you will:

  • be part of a two-man team to perform and support the drilling operations to gather geotechnical data to enable the Geologist or Engineer to make recommendations for design, construction and/or maintenance on future and existing roadways and structures. 
  • perform a wide variety of in situ tests utilizing various standard to complex drilling procedures. Standard in situ tests include Standard Penetration Tests, Vane Shear tests and Dynamic Penetration tests.
  • perform normal drilling procedures including auger drilling, mud drilling, rock coring, wash boring, hand augering, rod sounding and probing. 
  • be responsible for identifying the best method for penetrating subsurface materials to accomplish the needs of the supervising Geologist or Engineer and  for identifying changes in the subsurface conditions based on reactions of the drill equipment and test apparatus between test elevations. be responsible for mobilization of the complex drilling, testing and sampling equipment  
  • operate heavy equipment including trucks and trailers and transport equipment to various job sites. The drilling equipment consists of truck-mounted drills, ATV mounted drills, skid-mounted rigs and barge drills. 
  • equip the drill with the applicable drilling tools and accessories which may include pumps, pressure hoses, water tanks, drilling bits, drilling rods, drilling casing, coring apparatus, bentonite mud, mud tub, standard penetration test apparatus, solid augers, hollow stem augers, Shelby tubes, adapters, and hand tools. maintain complex drilling and testing equipment which requires frequent inspections and numerous repairs to all drill machines, testing and sampling equipment. 
  • maintain readiness of tools and equipment.
  • receive instruction from higher level technicians in the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the power drill machines, drill accessories, survey instruments and office procedures. 
  • contact property owners to notify them of the project activities on their property and obtain water well information. Also contact utility companies to have them determine the location of underground utilities on drilling projects.
Frequent overnight travel may be required of this position. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Additional Expectations:

Demonstrated ability to do very heavy work such as exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects

 

 

 

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
