In 2020, over 33 Latin American planetary health researchers and practitioners came together to co-create a planetary health online course in Portuguese hosted by TelessaúdeRS, a distance-learning education platform that has been hosting rights-based education resources for 15 years. The course received support from various stakeholders, including WONCA Working Party on the Environment, Confederación Iberoamericana de Medicina Familiar (CIMF), SBMFC, IEA-USP and their Saúde Planetária working groups, Rural Seeds, PHA and the Global Climate and Health Alliance (GCHA).
The Portuguese pilot concluded in July 2020 with nearly 3,000 course registrants, demonstrating a vast appetite for online planetary health curriculum. Initially targeted towards health professionals, a diversity of educators, designers, computer scientists, and other non-health professionals also enrolled in the course. Of those who completed the pilot, 97.3% said that they were satisfied or very satisfied with the course.
In order to expand the accessibility and impact of the pilot, PHA staff have been working with a group of volunteer translators and TelessaúdeRS to translate the course into English, and to broaden the intended audience from clinicians to anyone interested in deepening their knowledge of planetary heath. We are deeply grateful for all of the participation that made this effort possible.
Today, we are thrilled to announce that the planetary health online course has been completely translated into English - registration and the introductory module are now open! The course includes undergraduate-level modules, quizzes, activities, discussion forums, and supplementary resources on the following topics:
- Planetary health and climate change
- Heat waves and heat stress
- Air pollution and health
- Infectious diseases sensitive to climate change
- Pathways for planetary health: from social participation to management
- Mental and relational health
- Food and planetary health
- Water and planetary health
This course can be completed in a minimum of ten-weeks (approx. 100 hours) and is open to anyone interested in deepening their knowledge of planetary health. New modules will open each Thursday in the ten weeks following the course launch (between January 28th and March 25th, 2021), but participants can join and complete the course at any time until December 31, 2021. Participants who complete the course will receive a certificate of completion from TelessaúdeRS and the Planetary Health Alliance.
