POSITION TITLE:             Parks & Recreation Intern           

DEPARTMENT:                Parks & Recreation 

REPORTS TO:                   Parks & Recreation Director 

CLASSIFICATION:            Hourly; Temporary; Hours Variable 
 

JOB SUMMARY:

The Parks & Recreation Department Intern reports to the Parks & Recreation Director, but may receive direction and guidance from Recreation Program Supervisor and other department staff.  Will be responsible to participate in various activities and assist at multiple facilities.   The Parks & Recreation Department Intern is expected to be motivated and willing to learn about the many varied aspects of the Monroe Parks and Recreation Department. The Parks and Recreation Intern is expected to act in a professional manner at all times and be flexible in his/her hours of service. 

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists Parks and Recreation Director and Recreation Supervisor in the planning details of special events and Program needs. 
  • Participants at various special events, including, but not limited to:  races, concerts, movie nights, character nights and provides operational support, crowd control, public relations and working with other employees to provide set-up, operation, clean up and safety for all events.
  • Assists Parks and Recreation Director and Recreation Program Supervisor in filling gaps in staff for the pool, lake, admissions, day camp and office needs. 
  • Assists Parks and Recreation Director and Recreation Program Supervisor in the operation of youth and adult sports leagues and programs including, but not limited to assisting league operations, player evaluations, coaches’ background checks, registration records, meeting agendas, press releases, contacting participants and conducting surveys. 
  • Performs record keeping duties; game results, standings, rainout rescheduling, umpire scheduling, and all participant/roster data.
  • Inventory, prepare, and transport the variety of recreation related supplies, materials, and equipment for various sports and other recreation activities.   
  • Administers emergency response and first aid if needed. Properly documents all accidents and notifies supervisor.

 

 

EDUCATION/SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Currently majoring in Parks and Recreation or a related field.  
  • Must have completed 2 full years of college by the time the internship commences.  
  • Must have or be willing to obtain First Aid and CPR/AED certification. 
  • Excellent communications skills.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee regularly is required to stand, walk, sit, bend, occasionally drive a vehicle, use hand to finger coordination, handle or feel objects, and reach with hands and arms.  Ability to move about facilities and walk on unpaved, sloped, and uneven terrain. Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines and changing priorities and conditions. The employee may need to lift and/or moves up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus and read various documents.

POSITION TITLE:               Assistant Animal Control Officer              

DEPARTMENT:                  Police Department 

REPORTS TO:                     Chief of Police 

CLASSIFICATION:              Hourly; Unaffiliated; Per Diem 

SALARY RANGE:                $16.00 - $21.00 per hour
 

JOB SUMMARY:

Enforces all Connecticut State laws and regulations and ordinances pertaining to animals.  Manages the animal care facility.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBLILITIES:

  • Receives direction from the Animal Control Officer.
  • Receives and responds to complaints regarding domestic animals and wildlife from general public.
  • Enforces all relevant State and Town laws, ordinances and polices.
  • Investigates complaints of vicious, diseased, injured, mistreated or stray animals.
  • Patrols the Town of Monroe for violations concerning animals; captures and removes stray or vicious dogs to the impound facility.
  • Issues summons, tickets, or warnings to violators.
  • Removes injured or dead animals from town roads, in cooperation with the Public Works department.
  • Prepares and follows up on all Incident Reports, written statements and complaints to animals.
  • Assists the preparation of and makes court appearances as necessary in criminal & civil court cases.
  • Maintains permits with appropriate state agencies for handling, transport and care of animals.
  • Maintains records of complaints and related files.
  • Assists police, other town agencies and the public as needed.
  • Performs related tasks as needed.

 

EDUCATION/SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:

  • Must have current Connecticut Animal Control Officer Certification or be willing to obtain certification within one year.
  • Excellent communication, administrative and organizational skills.
  • Experience with care and handling of animals preferred.
  • Must Maintain a Valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.

POSITION TITLE:               Administrative Assistant to Senior Center Director (Support Svcs Asst. – contract title)  

DEPARTMENT:                  Social Services/Senior Center 

REPORTS TO:                     Senior Center Director 

CLASSIFICATION:              Hourly; Clerical Union; 35 hours per week 

Salary Range:                     $24.74 - $27.83 per hour           

 JOB SUMMARY:                

Assists Director in preparing the Senior Center for all programs and activities. Maintain coverage of the Center during Director’s absence.  Responsible for all Senior Center Administrative tasks.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist Director in collecting data for Quarterly Vehicle Operating Reports
  • Assist Director in all phases of monthly Newsletters
  • Assist with coordination of the Senior Center transportation program.
  • Calculate weekly attendance records.
  • Maintain Master mailing and membership lists
  • Open and close Senior Center (in absence of Director)
  • Assist Director in trip planning
  • Type weekly publicity correspondence to the Monroe Courier, Connecticut Post and channel 17 broadcasts.
  • Maintain all office and senior center supplies
  • Maintain all office equipment and schedule service as needed
  • Prepare requisitions for building maintenance as well as direct the staff
  • Programs – Prepare sign-in sheets, schedule program appointments, type and post daily scheduled, food and coffee preparations, kitchen and program room clean-up 
  • Bookkeeping – Complete payment requisitions forms for all Senior Center invoices and program instructor’s fees, deposit program, luncheon, registration and vehicle transportation fees.   Review and post accounts from Finance Department’s monthly run.
  • Maintain Sunshine Club database, and coordinate necessary mailings.
  • Assist Volunteer Coordinator with recruiting, scheduling, training, organizing and reviewing volunteers.
  • Oversee and coordinate Luncheon Volunteers keeping aware of health code requirements that pertain to food service.
  • Schedule and oversee Volunteer Newsletter publication.
  • Contact Outreach Worker regarding senior issues

 EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

High School Education minimum, Associates Degree or 3 years related experience.  Ability to work independently.

SALARY RANGE:        $15.69 -$20.50 per hour


JOB SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Adult/Teen Services Librarian or the Children’s Services Librarian, performs responsible and varied technical and clerical work for the Circulation Department.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

•    Understands and is able to perform all jobs related to lending library materials, registering patrons, receiving and processing reserves and system-level hold requests, collecting and recording fines and fees.

•    Provides reference assistance and readers advisory.

•    Provides basic technology assistance on use of public computers.

•    Assists with Children’s programming, marketing, and display creation as required.

•    Shelves materials and shelf reads collection.

•    Empties outdoor bookdrop.

•    Moves/shifts books and materials collections. 

•    Retrieves materials for patrons from storage.

•    Straightens magazines, displays, furniture, and collections as needed.

•    Operates fax machine, copier, and other technical equipment.

•    Performs other related duties in the Library as assigned.


EDUCATION/SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:

•    High School Diploma required.

•    Library Technical Assistant degree, other related education or previous experience preferred.

•    Knowledge of public library services and programs preferred.

•    Strong oral and written communications skills.

•    Ability to respond in an effective manner to the concerns of library patrons.

•    Ability to understand and interpret library policies, procedures, and rules.

•    Ability to keep accurate records.

•    Basic computer skills required.

•    Self-motivated team player who enjoys working with public.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

•    Ability to move and/or lift up to 25 pounds and push a loaded book truck weighing up to 300 pounds.

•    Regularly required to stand, sit, walk, bend, kneel, crawl, reach, climb steps and balance.

POSITION TITLE:             Seasonal Highway Maintainer    

DEPARTMENT:                 Public Works 

REPORTS TO:                 Director of Public Works or designee 

CLASSIFICATION:           Hourly; Temporary; Unaffiliated; Flexible Hours 


JOB SUMMARY:

Manual work supporting the maintenance of various aspects of the Town’s infrastructure, public facilities and grounds; all other related work, as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBLILITIES:

•    Assists in maintenance repair of roadway system including but not limited to road surface, shoulder maintenance, drainage maintenance, street sign replacement or repair, trimming/mowing, litter removal and vegetation control.

•    Assists in maintenance on Town facilities including landscaping.

•    Performs preventive and general equipment repair and other general maintenance tasks.

•    Performs other related duties in the Department of Public Works as assigned.

•    Complies with all safety regulations and procedures. 


EDUCATION/SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:

•    Minimum of 18 years of age.

•    Some mechanical knowledge preferred.

•    Highly self-motivated and goal oriented.

•    Ability to function as part of a team to accomplish goals. 

•    Ability to follow written and oral instructions.

•    Must possess a Valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
