Oaklore Changemakers Podcast

At Latitude High, students tackle meaningful, creative projects that they take pride in for years to come. Twenty years from now, Latitude graduates will look back on their time in high school and remember publishing a book, recording their own podcast, designing a house, building a self-driving car, and so much more.

Oaklore, the signature ninth grade podcasting project, is one of students’ favorites. Students work in teams to interview inspirational changemakers who are working to impact an important local issue. Through this project, students dig into local history and build skills in research, scriptwriting, interviewing, and sound editing using Adobe Audition. Check out their work at 378media.com.

Projects that are Hands-On and Minds-On

Learning at Latitude is creative: both hands-on and minds-on.

In Biology, our juniors designed their own arcade to teach audience members about human body systems. In Design-Engineering, our sophomores built their own underwater ROVs (remotely operated vehicles), with GoPros and trawls attached, to gather underwater video footage and data for Oakland's Harbormaster. Last semester, they designed and coded math video games for 4th and 5th graders at our sister elementary school.

In Physics & Design, our ninth graders are currently designing and building two Tiny Houses that will be donated to the first Tiny House village for homeless youth in the Bay Area. Last year, they also crafted their own wooden and fiberglass boats that they successfully floated in the San Francisco Bay!

Extended Learning Opportunities

Latitude’s tagline is “The City is Our School” because the staff at Latitude is committed to exposing students to the full range of opportunities that exist in the Bay Area. From the time students are in ninth grade, they travel to different companies and non-profit organizations across the Bay Area to connect with creative adults from many walks of life. Latitude students have interviewed music producers at Pandora, architects at Gyroscope Inc., journalists at ABC News, video game designers at Phoenix Labs, art curators at the Joyce Gordon Gallery, engineers at Youtube and Google, pediatric surgeons at Children’s Hospital, and more.

Come meet our team!

At Latitude, collaboration is our lifeblood. PD is dynamic and creative, as we mutually inspire and support each other. Latitude teachers have two hours of prep a day, which makes a significant impact on teaching sustainability and the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues.

We can't wait to meet you, learn about your passions and dreams as an educator, and work together to make those hopes a reality!
