My good friend Dick recommended this to me ages ago, but I was so disappointed with King’s recent Fairy Tale that I lost interest in his books for a time.
This is a moving story, well written, and it expresses as King can do so well the beauty, honor, love, and bravery that humans are capable of.
It feels a bit churlish to even bring it up, but only minor portions of the novel have to do with Lee Harvey Oswald, who is barely mentioned in the first three hundred pages. As good as the material is, he clearly had lots of it already on hand and worked it into a larger tale, for example, the bits that connect back to Derry and It.
It’s awfully long – no one believes they are allowed to edit King down when he needs it – but it’s so nicely written that I still recommend it as a good read.

Hi Ron, I agree, Fairy Tale was 2/3 parts awful. But that's King for you: a few highlights and a lot of mediocre books. His early work is the best, if you haven't read Misery or The Shining I highly suggest you follow this one up with those.
