Happy Halloweekend, Team Moosalamoo Families!

We hope you are doing well. Student-led conferences will be taking place over the next few weeks. Students will complete a slideshow portfolio in school next week to showcase the work they have been doing in each of their classes. Please look for an email from your student’s Advisor to sign up for a date and time to meet, either in-person or digitally.

Thank you again, to families who have been sending students in with plenty of snacks. This is very helpful, as they are all hungry by their last couple of classes & it is difficult for teachers to supply snacks for many students. As it gets colder, please remind your student to wear warm layers since we will continue to go outside for recess and for PE.

We love celebrating our “Students of the Week” every Wednesday! Congratulations to the following students for putting in amazing effort and showing up each day with a positive attitude. We notice and appreciate you!

Hello, Team Moosalamoo Families!

We hope that you have had a great week and are looking forward to a nice weekend. Some updates as the year gets rolling… We understand that students might miss more school this year, due to extra COVID precautions and want to support each student to the best of our ability. Each teacher is in the process of setting up a Schoology classroom, which materials will be posted to. When students miss school, our hope is for them to check their Schoology account or email teachers to complete classwork from home. Of course, if your child is missing school due to illness or an extreme circumstance, please let us know and we will work on an alternative plan.

All Middle School (grades 5-8) students who are interested in joining Chorus are invited to an informational meeting next Tuesday, 9/21, from 7-7:25 am. The meeting will be held in the music room (room 122) with Mr. Rosacker.

Finally, students enjoy and oftentimes need a snack after our 10:30 and 11:25 lunch times. If families could help by packing students a healthy morning and afternoon snack, it would be greatly appreciated!

Upcoming Dates:

  • Friday, September 24: Picture Day

  • October 11: Fundraiser deadline- Students have been invited to partake in a PTA fundraiser and should have brought home a packet with further information.

Curriculum Updates:

  • ELA: We are working on prefixes and root words to improve our reading comprehension.

  • Science: 5th graders copper plated a nail to learn about the nature of matter! And 6th graders used sundials to help learn about the daily motion of the earth and sun!

  • Math: 5th Grade- Graphing points on a coordinate grid 6th Grade- Working on creating equivalent ratios

  • Social Studies: 5th and 6th grade students completed their first Schoology assignment about indigenous peoples. Both grades are launching into our new units by practicing vocab through a variety of games.

  • World Languages: Please check out what students have been working on in Spanish and French here!

*Acceleration is a thirty minute block each day from 12:20-12:50 designed to bolster students’ affinity for reading. All students should have personal reading material at this point and are welcome to bring books in from home.

Happy Friday, Moosalamoo!

We hope that everyone is doing well this week. We are finding that students are enjoying being back in school five days a week. They are learning to switch from class to class smoothly and are excited to start using their lockers! Moosalamoo students are expected to bring academic materials, including Chromebooks, to class in their backpacks. Lockers will be used for PE, recess, and extracurricular gear.

Upcoming Dates:

  • Friday, September 24: Picture Day

Curriculum Updates:

  • Research Skills: Students are doing research about banned books!

  • STEAM: We had an awesome time creating wire sculptures this week and some students even made hanging mobiles.

  • ELA: We have been practicing “team-juggling” and beginning to work on protocols for reading and writing workshop.

  • Science: In fifth grade science, we’ve been getting rid of the dullness on pennies to learn about materials changing over time. In sixth grade science, we have simulated the rotation of the Earth to understand why pictures of stars are blurred.

  • Math: 5th Grade- Coordinate Graphing in the first quadrant 6th Grade- We are starting to explore ratios.

  • Social Studies: This week we began a lesson about different indigenous peoples to kick off both our colonization unit (6th grade) and our indigenous peoples unit (5th grade).

    • On Friday we discussed the 20th anniversary of September 11th. We talked about different ways that we can honor people who lost their lives as well as the heroes who fought for others. Students may ask for more information about the attacks, as we talked about them but did not watch the footage in class.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to your student’s teachers and/or advisor with any questions or concerns.

Thank You,

Hello, Team Moosalamoo!

Our first full week of school flew by! We were able to get outside and enjoy the gorgeous weather and play some fun full-team games. As there is no school this coming Monday (blue week), next Wednesday will be a full school day with a 2:30 dismissal time. Students were given school picture forms today for photos on September 24th.

Chromebooks and chargers have been distributed to all Moosalamoo students at this point. Please remind your child to plug computers in each evening so they are fully charged the next day. These first couple weeks have been largely focused on getting to know each other, individually and as a group. As we start assigning digital work, we will use Schoology to post and grade student work and materials.

Next week, as the weather is changing, we are going to assign lockers to Moosalamoo students. We are asking students to store their bulky layers and sports gear in their lockers. Chromebooks and backpacks will travel with students as they go from class to class.

Right now masks are optional while outside and we are strongly expecting students to keep a distance from each other and refrain from touching each other. To help with this effort, a conversation at home reinforcing the importance of social distancing would be greatly appreciated. We want to make sure that our students and staff stay healthy as it gets colder.

Thank you for your support and communication. We hope that you have a wonderful long Labor Day weekend!

Best,

First Day Of School Email:

August 23, 2021

Greetings, Team Moosalamoo Families!

We are so excited to see everyone for our first day of school on Wednesday. We enjoyed getting to meet some of you during the school BBQ last week. Thank you to all who were able to stop by and say hello!

Ms. Tracy (room 237), Mr. Herrick (room 235), Ms. Brewer’s (room 234), and Mrs. Duffy’s (room 233) classrooms are upstairs in the yellow/cranberry-colored hallway. Your student will begin his/her day from 7:00-7:30 in Room # __(see email)__. This is the group that your child will have all Core classes (Social Studies, ELA, Math, and Science) with. Please see the attached schedule, which is specific for your student’s core group. We will also hand out hard copies of the schedules tomorrow.

From 7:30-8:00 am, students will split into six mixed-grade advisory groups, which will be announced tomorrow morning. Advisory is a thirty minute block of time designed to connect students through community-building activities. You will each hear from your student’s Advisor in the near future!

The Milton Middle School will alternate between “Blue” and “Gold” schedules each week, starting with a Blue Week this week. This will allow students to have equitable access to course offerings. Both Blue and Gold schedules are linked below.

Thank you for your patience and support! We are so excited to get to know each of your students and families this year!

Best,

Your Core 1 Teacher

June Welcome Letter

Monday, June 14th, 2021

Hi Families,

We would like to welcome you to our new 5th/6th grade team! On Thursday, June 10th, students had the opportunity to vote for our new team name based on a list of selected VT mountains! Mt. Mooosalamoo was the winning mountain name! We would like to officially welcome you to Team Moosalamoo. Moosalamoo is pronounced “Mooose-ah-la-moo”. It is derived from the Abenaki word “Mozalômo” meaning “moose call, song or sound”.

Next year, students will have four core classes: math, science, english language arts and social studies. Miss Tracy will be teaching math. Mr. Herrick will be teaching science. Ms. Duffy will be teaching english language arts. Ms. Brewer will be teaching social studies. Attached you will find some more information about all of us.

We are excited for a year of learning, growth and fun. We will be sending more information out later this summer!

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us!

We hope you have a fantastic summer!
