When I was sailing on ships, I was fortunate to visit ports all over the world From exotic ports in South America to modern ports in Europe & Asia There was a time when ships would stay 15-20 days in ports for loading/off-loading cargo! But as port operations became more efficient, port stays became less and very hectic That’s why I loved sailing in the ocean, more than staying in port When the ship was in the middle of the ocean, literally in the middle of nowhere…. I was more at peace A good day at sea meant clear blue skies, rippled mirror waters The ship cruising silently in deep oceans No one to disturb or bother Just me, my ship, my crew and the elements of nature…. It was a transformative experience It was in those parts of the ocean where I found real peace and a sense of control Remember: The deeper the water you explore, the more you discover the unknown The more you discover the unknown, the more you know about yourself #leadership

My first job on my first ship was to clean the decks   In 1994, I joined my first ship as a cadet. I was very excited. I was travelling abroad for the first time   The day I landed on the ship, I was given a mop to clean floors   I felt horrible and confused. I had trained so hard and joined one of best shipping companies to do what - mop floors?   What will my family think? What will I tell them when they ask what I do?   But I had no choice. I couldn’t go back home, so I reluctantly started working   But that became a daily routine - cleaning decks, painting, repair jobs All physically exhausting work. The worst was cleaning engine room bilges, filled with dirty oil, grease etc   I remained confused   Then one fine day, my Captain explained me the concept of “Dignity of Labor” which essentially meant: 1. No job is big or small 2. When you do a job yourself, you realize how tough it is. You then have respect for people who do it   It was an important lesson which changed my outlook towards work and life   So, no matter where you are, how successful you are:   ✅Always remain grounded ✅Don’t be afraid to roll-up your sleeves and get your hands dirty if needed ✅Lead your crew with respect and empathy   Happy Labor Day! #mayday #laborday

Suppose you decide to build 6-pack abs You join a gym with the best trainers and the best equipment But does joining the gym alone guarantee you the results? Ofcourse not!! You need to show up regularly at the gym, perform the workouts, follow the diet and the lifestyle as prescribed The gym or your trainer does not control the results you get. They provide you the tools, training and resources you need Your trainer can challenge you, motivate you. But ultimately, YOU are responsible for putting in the work YOU control the actions and the results This is applicable in coaching as well Sometimes, leaders get too fixated about ROI of coaching. They want guarantees of results from the coach What they fail to realize is that a coach DOES NOT control the results A coach has to challenge, push, motivate, question and listen. But taking action is in the hands of the coachee, NOT the coach While it’s important to measure the success of coaching, don’t get too hung up on justifying the ROI or look for guarantees Instead, focus more on your readiness to be coached and finding the right coach for yourself Because when both give their 100%, that is when transformation happens Understanding this two-way nature of a coaching relationship is key What about you? When I left shipping in 2009, I had the choice to keep my Captain’s license valid A Captain’s license has to be renewed regularly to ensure that one remains fit and eligible to serve on ships That would have been a good back-up plan for me, just in case my new career did not work out – I could have gone back to sailing But I let my Captain’s license expire when I left sailing You know why? Because I don’t believe in having backup plans, when it comes to achieving my goals I knew that at the very first moment of struggle in my new career, I would have had the temptation to go back to sea. I knew that with an option available, I might not give my new career enough time to prove and become successful Let's be honest.... Most of us want to play safe and secure. We have plan A, plan B and even plan C. But this approach sabotages success at every level because: When you have a back-up plan, you’re already thinking of failure as an option. You never give your 100% as you know you have a fallback option But when you DON’T have a back-up plan, you give 110% in whatever you do. You challenge and push yourself harder. You have no other option than to succeed Infact, that’s how I coach my clients - I challenge and encourage them to go all-in to pursue their goals. No back-up plans Now this approach of not having any back-up plans might seem to be risky and counterintuitive, right? But the truth is that the very need to be safe and secure is exactly what is holding you back That very need to have multiple options is preventing you from creating a strong and singular focus to achieve your goals. It prevents you from taking risks Bottomline: Stop playing safe and secure Go all-in!

Imagine you are sitting in a room with tiled ceiling You look up. The ceiling has beautiful tiles Then suddenly, you notice that one tile is missing. Just one tile But now, all your focus goes towards it The ceiling does not appear beautiful anymore, because of the missing tile The same thing happens in our lives. We all have something missing - our missing tiles Your missing tile could be anything - money, perfect job, great looks, perfect partner.... Most of your time, energy and focus goes towards that missing piece - what you don't have, rather than enjoying what you have It almost seems that life is not beautiful, it's not complete without that missing tile You forget or ignore what you already have - you almost take it for granted This is called the “The Missing Tile Syndrome”, a term coined by Dennis Prager The missing tile in the ceiling could be replaced, but it might not work that way in our lives Life is not that simple. Life is not perfect Yet, you try very hard to repair, replace or even get new tiles in our lives, rather than be grateful for what you already have Hence, most of us remain unhappy and dissatisfied. We all suffer from this "Missing Tile" syndrome It's worse when you think that your missing tile is with someone else - someone has a better job, great looks, better partner, more money.... You become more unhappy, frustrated, ungrateful Time to make the shift: Don’t focus on your missing tile Enjoy the tiles you have in life #happiness
