The Walking Dead - Season 2 - Sundays on AMC

The Walking Dead, based on the comic created by Robert Kirkman, is back on Sunday, October 16th at 9pm on AMC. The premiere is a 90 minute episode. AMC will air six one-hour episodes each week before putting the show on hiatus. It'll return Sun., Feb. 12 in its regular 9PM timeslot. Also, just a quick heads up that Netflix put S1 up for streaming this morning.

Though TWD is an undeniable ratings hit for AMC, it has been a tumultuous off season for the show. Frank Darabont is gone as show runner with Glenn Mazzara taking the reins, and AMC's budgetary decisions have been a constant distraction. It's tough to say how the show will be in S2 after an uneven first season, but I'm curious enough to check it out and see what happens.

Just a reminder to avoid or spoiler tag comic book spoilers in this thread. If you want to talk about the comics past where we are in the series, please use the thread for the comics: The Walking Dead (comics). For simple questions such as "When is this character going to appear on the show?", use spoiler tags and label your spoilers appropriately to give people an idea how far into the comics you're referencing. At times this is a little bit of a hassle, but keep in mind that this is a thread for the television show, not for the comics. Thank you. EDIT: Also, please read the highlighted text at the bottom of the OP.

Lauren Cohan is joining the zombie resistance.

The alum of Supernatural, Vampire Diaries and Chuck has landed a pivotal role on AMC’s The Walking Dead.

Cohan will recur as
Maggie Greene, the sharp, self-reliant daughter of farm owner Hershel Greene and a love interest for Glenn (Steven Yuen), reports TV Guide Magazine.

The role of
Hershel,
meanwhile, will be played by acting vet Scott Wilson, who’s probably best known to TV audiences as Catherine’s biological father on CSI.

- AMC Confirms Pruitt Taylor Vince Cast in The Walking Dead Season 2
Today AMC confirmed that actor Pruitt Taylor Vince has been cast to star in Season 2 of The Walking Dead. Vince, the star of such films as Monster, Identity and L.A. Confidential, is set to play
Otis, the foreman at Hershel's farm. Otis is described as a good-natured and polite individual, who first meets Rick and the other survivors under harrowing life-and-death circumstances.

- 'Walking Dead' scoop: 'Rescue Me' star joins season 2 cast
Michael Zegen has signed on for the recurring role of
Randall (nope, he’s not in the comic books, he’s a new addition to the storyline). Randall is described as a skinny Southern kid who finds himself in a rather unique set of post-apocalypse circumstances.
Beyond that, producers are staying mum on the role.

Season 1 is now up on Netflix:

- AMC Networks Strikes Deal With Netflix For ‘The Walking Dead’ And Other Programming
Deadline.com said:
Beverly Hills, Calif. and New York, NY, October 7, 2011–Netflix Inc. and AMC Networks Inc. have reached a multi-year licensing agreement that will make prior seasons of AMC’s critically-acclaimed original series, The Walking Dead, available exclusively to Netflix members in the U.S. and Canada. Season 1 of The Walking Dead will be available today. Additional seasons of The Walking Dead, as well as certain future AMC and Sundance Channel programming, will be streaming instantly to Netflix members just prior to the premiere of subsequent seasons.

Early buzz from critics that have seen the S2 premiere:
Walking Dead's Season 2 premiere won't let any fans down. It may, however, make a few of them puke. Can't wait to see more.
Wasn't in mood for lunch anyway. But after getting peek at intense, graphic, excellent Walking Dead S2 opener, I only have appetite for ep 2.
Just gorged on the Walking Dead season 2 premiere. Get ready for the show's most grosstastic scene yet. And that's saying something.

As uneven as the show was beyond the pilot I am very excited for it to return. Reviews sound like they got their shit together this year.

This poster pulses with an appeal so broad the typical restraints of our societies fall by the wayside.
Like many, I thought S1 got worse with each episode after the excellent premiere, but I'll be giving this a shot — six episodes aren't really enough to make or break a series for me, especially considering it shows some promise. Glad to hear the the premiere is a good one. I just hope Dale dies soon.

I loved, loved, loved the pilot. Must have watched it at least 10 times. Didn't care for the rest of the first season. Good thing there are new writers and stuff, hopefully this season will be better!

The best thing about season 1 was the achievement unlocked sound when the sheriff killed his first zombie.

Maybe? Most definitely. The show started very strong, then entered what the fuck this is so fucking dull land real quick and stayed there until the very end, which was only ever so slightly less dull than everything else.

The news of them cutting the budget per episode and Darabont leaving doesn't fill me with hope that this season is going to be any good, we might get the odd good episode, but the budget cut is going to hurt pretty much everything from effects, to extras, to location shooting, etc.

I just hope that they stay true to the graphic novels/what am I saying of course they won't lol.

Honestly I hope they deviate from them more, use the comics only as a basic framework. It would be boring to know how the next 4 seasons of this show are going to play out. As long as they keep in the major points I will be happy. I'm glad we've already gotten new characters (Go Daryl!) and new locations (seriously, outbreak in Atlanta, who ISN'T going to head to the CDC?).

S1 sucked because of the piss poor writing (hello, secret geriatric residence, hello, shitass new characters), budget had nothing to do with it.

Considering that the show is now run by one of the best writers from The Shield, I'm optimistic.

The writing was fantastic, the problem is fanboys who cry about new characters, news flash its a tv show adaption of the comics, it can't stay 100% true to the comics because it wouldn't appeal to the ginormous audience it has now appealed to, it would have 0 twist.

I don't mind the show deviating from the original material (I actually like it), but almost every change was a step in the wrong direction.
Care to explain further? as a gigantic fanboy of walking dead i enjoyed the deviations.

I've never read the comics. The writing was bad. "Fanboy" had nothing to do with it. It was just a poorly written show (I'm referring mostly to the dialogue). I still think it's got potential, though, so I'll be checking this out.

Mad scientist? Really? The whole first season was like a firework- up like a rocket and down like a stick.

I don't really know what is to explain. The new characters are about as deep as a spoon, and the show was chock full of tired, stupid tropes, starting with the redneck brothers (mind you, the skinny one is not too bad). The nursing home episode was so, sooo terrible, and not even the season finale gave us shit. The entire season was a big puff of nothing.

I liked the pilot, though.

Rolling my eyes through the entire episode. Just awful stuff.

Agreed on all counts.

S1 failed to capatalise on the shows full potential because of some, easily avoidable, piss poor scripting/directorial decisions.

i'd managed to purge that episode with the gangbangers and their homeless man's denzel-imitator leader. fuck y'all.

amazing OP! props.

When you say "It'll return Sun., Feb. 12 in its regular 9PM timeslot." do you mean it will have an actual season then? Cause these six episode chunks aren't cutting it.

It's a split season. 7 episodes this Fall and another 6 starting in February.

I typically avoid all "webisodes" (even the fucking name is stupid) but every single one I've clicked a link to is bad. I haven't seen a single show pull that off in a way that doesn't make my skin crawl.

This season is a full 13 episodes.
Premiere is 90 minutes, followed by 6 1-hour episodes, then the hiatus, then another 6 1-hour episodes including the season finale.

Most shows take a break between the November and February sweeps periods so this is pretty much the norm.

Looking forward to the inevitable cliffhanger at the end of the 7th episode.

It's a pretty lengthy break, and thus far they haven't broken up many cable seasons over the holiday. I see your point, but this is something new for AMC as they try and spread their content around to cover more of the calendar year.

Despite watching the fucking AWFUL webisodes (thanks for the shout out, Cornballer! :) ) I'm still quite excited for season 2. The poster, with Rick running towards the house, is really evocative and the trailer definitely showed the right things to get me excited.

Oh hell yeah! I'll definitely rewatch Season 1 now!

I'm really crossing my fingers that second season doesn't have a huge drop in quality after the hiatus...

Sweet.. hope they do the release to Blu-Ray soon after airing thing again..

Season 1 was awesome.. and I enjoyed the entire season.. so sue me.

I hope the cgi is a bit better. Not asking for blockbuster-esque quality, but at least so that it isn't so apparent most of the time.
