Secure Homes PETITION
Evictions and homelessness significantly worsen the threat posed by COVID-19. In order for Michiganders to remain compliant with social distance “stay home and stay safe” orders, all Michigan residents need the Governor’s help to ensure that they have safe and functional homes to live in throughout the duration of the current global pandemic, and that includes tenants.
In order to halt widespread displacement from our homes and our jobs or businesses which would only worsen the current situation, we are calling on Governor Whitmer and Chief Judge Bridgett Mary McCormick to:
1) Immediately suspend the collection of rent for residential and commercial units, and eliminate past due rent obligations.
2) Extend the current moratorium on evictions until 60 days after the end of the current state of emergency.
3) Institute a moratorium on utility shut-offs
With urgency, the undersigned call on Governor Whitmer to ensure secure housing for all Michiganders for up to 60 days following the end of the state of emergency.
