Reclaiming Blingdenstone

Blingdenstone, a city that was once the home of thousands of svirfneblin (deep gnomes) and the only safe refuge in the northern Underdark, is in ruins. Although a brave band of svirfneblin struggles to reclaim the city, the gnomes cannot do so without help. The power to aid them is in the hands of you brave adventurers.

Whether lured by the promise of glory or driven by a desire to help, you and your companions have traveled far to lend aid to the svirfneblin of Blingdenstone. After drow attacked the city to enslave the deep gnomes, the survivors lived in exile for over a century. But some have returned to their home, and they’re embroiled in a battle to rid their caverns of monstrous inhabitants.

Your guide is a svirfneblin explorer named Briddick, who is slender with slate-gray skin, a bald head, and wide, gray eyes. He leads the way through secret tunnels and a winding labyrinth. Finally, you reach the ruined city.

Work to repair damage the drow dealt continues. The gnomes wear tattered armor and bloody bandages. They carry notched and broken weapons, suggesting that the fighting has been fierce and frequent.

Feel free to interact a bit, but I want everyone to post their sheets, and once everyone has posted we can move on.

Zarnov the Magnificent

"Ha! Are we finally here? Is this the Blingstone?"

Zarnov still felt dizzy from the labyrinth of passageways the svirfneblin had guided them through. There was no way in the hells he was getting out of here again without help. Actually, magic could probably do the trick. It always does the trick.

The tiefling looked absurdly out of place among all these gnomes. Deep red skin and large red horns made him stand out instantly. He was dressed in a fine white robe, but that barely rated a glance next to the large, devilish holy symbol around his neck. It was an amulet the size of a buckler shield. Zarnov had assured you all he wears it ironically. People always whispered behind his back that he was probably an infernal cultist or some-such, so he started wearing a gigantic symbol of the devil god for laughs.

Quilian Nailos [Recruit Info]
HP: 10 | AC: 15 | Arrows: 40

Quilian Nailos stuck close to the group as they roamed the tunnels of the Underdark, following their guide with nary a missed step. His thoughts had been on the glamorous city of Silverymoon, it's intense beauty left unexplored in his haste to find the expedition heading to Blingdenstone. From there he traded those visual splendors for these cave-like, endlessly gray tunnels. The promise at the end of this path was grand, however. An entire city underground. It almost seemed too fantastical to be real.

He had yet to mingle with his group beyond a formal greeting. The horned, red skinned individual being perhaps the most exotic of races he's yet to meet. As the corner turns and the group spills forth into Blingdenstone proper, the immense area fills him with wonder. It isn't until his eyes settle on the destruction of the city that the reality overrides his thoughts.

"Manen naira "How awful". What would bring such ruin to this place?"

Turning toward Quilian as the Elven words came out of his mouth, Grim responds "The gnomes do love their mess. That's why they sent for outside help, to do a little spring-cleaning. Can't be trusted to do it themselves." The boy looks away, blushing, when their guide gives him a firm scowl.

Grim is a human youth of average height and brown, shaggy hair, a bright, green feather interwoven in one lock. He wears simple leathers, with a green brooch in the shape of a leaf fastening his cloak. As most kids do, he trys to maintain an air of coolness in spite of the obvious amazement he experiences from seeing the Underdark for the first time in his life.

Shamis Aeryn

Blingdenstone at least looks alive, not like her village after those monsters had finished with it. The last thing these survivors needed was criticism from some latecoming opportunists, which is probably what the svirfneblin considered all the adventurers to be. At least the kids' flapping gums gave Shamis something to differentiate herself from.

"Keeping everything looking pretty for you isn't the priority, that'd be surviving long enough to win back what's theirs. They're all pitching in to pay us to help them win the fight, so best show the respect an employer deserves."

Sereia Arlingfeld

Sereia follows along with the group, hearing them (if not necessarily listening) but keeping herself silent.
She seems distant, and perhaps lost in thought, her gaze mostly looking at the ground ahead of her, but occasionally glancing off in one direction or another. Oftentimes, followed by a deep sigh.

Finally, she speaks up:
"It's never quite as simple as it first appears; I have to imagine this situation is pretty serious..."

She trails off, not really able to form her thoughts as completely as she would like; you can tell by the frown across her brow, her lips forming a disappointed-looking smirk off to one side.

Sereia swings her bow around and begins to trace her fingers along the string. She never was particularly experience with one, but it was nevertheless handy to have around. Perhaps this mission would see her make more use of it, she thought. She paused a second, then quickly swapped the weapon for her shield, looking at the symbol emblazoned upon it, before brushing her hand across it in a slow, deliberate fashion. She fixates on it for a moment, before stowing it again.

Entrance to Blingdenstone

Briddick turns back to you as he answers your questions. "Blingdenstone, yes this is the entrance. The drow came and we fled, now we return and try to reclaim what we once had."

With that said, unless he is asked more questions, he leads the group to a wide stone stairway [1] between two walls. Heading up, turning back to make certain the group is following him. He leads the group to a stone landing [3]. Beyond the landing are two immense metal banded doors that lead into the city.

As the group begins to head up the stairs to follow Briddick a few note a large side tunnel [2], large enough to fit ore carts, that leads to a small side chamber [4]. At the top of the stairs they can see that there is a crank at the top, and a chain leading downward. The more mechanically inclined, or intuitive can gather that a cart would be hooked on the chain, and then pulled up the incline by turning the crank.

Briddick doesn't explain the device, in fact doesn't even bother looking at it for it is such a common thing to him, instead he pauses at the large banded doors while he waits for you to make your way to the top. Once everyone is up, and has had a chance to catch their breath, he nods and opens the doors. Revealing a maze of stone walls. Home to the Deep Gnome guard, so narrow even the gnomes must travel single file.

He carefully leads you through the maze, and it quickly becomes apparent why a guide was needed. Eventually you make your way free of the maze. Leading you into this central cavern [12] Briddick looks back at you and informs you. "This cavern is called Phantasmal Glamours in honor of the magic shop that was once housed here." He nods toward an aged deep gnome rummaging about in the remains of a shop. "Henkala Shadowsong there was the proprietor of Phantasmal Glamours before the attack."

Looking around the cavern one can see the aged deep gnome picking through the remains of her shop, and five sentries stationed at four barricades, with two at the northern barricade. Toward the center of the cavern a spring wells up crystal clear.

The map is not accurate as far as the maze and the traps laid within it, if one wishes to leave the city they will need a deep gnome guide.

Kneeling down before the wellspring, Sereia traces her fingernails over the surface of the water and blesses herself, whispering something softly before getting back to her feet.

Approaching the northern barricade, she stops to speak to the sentries posted there.

Quilian Nailos [Recruit Info]
HP: 10 | AC: 15 | Arrows: 40

Quilian rests his left hand on the short sword pommel from his hip. Nervous. While not happy with the mazes tight space, his concern sits with his inability to remember the path they're taking. Few indicating marks, if any. A sea of blank, high reaching walls and turns. Not one to be lost easily, he mutters to himself with some sense of awe upon seeing the burnt store, "The drow got through."

The elf knows little of Drow. Dark Elves hadn't been sighted back home in ages. Tales survive of their martial prowess, but more their cruelty. To fight such a foe would push his skills, a restless and ardent thought. Before the wellspring he kneels, filling an empty waterskin. Sights and sounds of their trip had him forgetting his own thirst. He had but a mouthful when the nearby guard cries out "Orcs!"

He sees them now, too close for arrows. With blades drawn he swiftly moves forward, utilizing the barricade for protection and waits. If he's lucky, they didn't spot him moving, might get to surprise one. Either way, to face down an orc in close combat is no easy task. Quilian knows this well, perhaps more than most. There are few enemies in the world he has faced as many times as an orc, for the species is many and wide spread through out. No surprise to find them even down here, far below the surface world.

Moving Quilian up to the barricade and using it for cover (one square north of his position looks like it might work for cover - if not, can ignore the stealth check). Stealth check for advantage on attack. Readying my action; if an orc moves past the barricade to enter the square on my left (or if I have no cover, an orc engages me directly) Quilian uses his two weapon fighting attack action against it.

Grim fully intended go over to ruin of the magic shop. If nothing else, ingratiating himself with the local mages might allow him to learn some of the arcane secrets of the Underdark, a place so deeply infused with the Weave that it could drive the unprepared insane. Why else would he be commanded to go down here if not to learn?

He only made it a few steps toward Henkala when the guard shouted out. "Nine Hells," he cursed under his breath as he drew his staff with one hand, the other starting to glow green with arcane energies. He launches the blast at the nearest charging foe, the light slamming into its chest.

Stepping forward, she drew her bow and knocked an arrow, firing it off at the orc to her left, he hand shaking a little as she released the bowstring.

Just as quickly as she had attacked, she backed off to a defensive position, (2 squares west of Quilian's endpoint) looking over to the other elf with a knowing nod, as she drew her shortsword in her free hand. "Hold here," she whispered in elvish, "When they come through, we will strike."

Quilian hides behind the barricade, barely, though most of the orcs spot him without too much trouble. One however is too busy getting hit by strange green energy to notice the figure not quite fully hidden by the barricade.

Another orc is about to point out Quilian's hiding place when he gets and arrow in the shoulder, turning his directions into snarled cursing. It rushes Sereia but with the arrow in its shoulder it fails to connect, by quite a large margin. It continues cursing in orcish. Meanwhile the oblivious orc rushes between the barricades, and into the waiting blades of Quilian. After having been hit with a weird green energy and then a bunch of blades that it wasn't even aware of it falls to the ground, dead. The final orc rushes in and attacks Sereia. But this one manages to connect, tremendously. Sereia is nearly knocked from her feet by the tremendous blow.

Stalactites hand low from its ceiling, sometimes touching the stalagmites jutting up from the floor, and the walls are blackened with ancient soot. At the very edge of your light, a small form--too lithe to be a deep gnome--flits behind a stalagmite and out of sight.

Forges at the far eastern end of the cavern are still and dark, partially covered with stone that looks as if it has flowed over them.

Quilian waits for the others at the entrance of the cavern. He had only caught the vague outline of the creature before it slipped out of sight. "Not sure. Too small to be like the others."

Intrigued, Quilian steps closer to where it was last seen. "Are you there? We mean no harm. Henkala Shadowsong sent us. Spoke of.. Elementals?" It's starting to feel like he's talking to himself.

A few whispers pass through the stone, and after a moment, assuming no one makes a threatening motion or have any weapons out, a head pops up out of the stone. It looks you over, pops back. Then a moment later a small form slides out of the stone.

The creature is a little shorter than a dwarf, and a little taller than gnomes, but far more willowy than either. It had long arms and legs, broad feet and hands, and yellowish skin. Its large, dark eyes have no pupils, and its hair is red. It looks over the group warily, and seems ready to slip back into the stone at a moment's notice.

The creature speaks, in common, "What do you want to say?" Perhaps curious, but also wary.

Entrance to Blingdenstone

"But pechs have moved into the old Armorers and Weaponsmiths Guild. They know elementals, and if anyone can help us deal with Ogrémoch’s Bane it's them. Talk to them. Do what you can. Kargien might not thank you for it, but I will. I assure you, the gratitude of an old woman is something to be treasured."

Sereia briefly conveys what the old woman said.
"We're here to help the svirfneblin. Can you aid us?"

As Sereia mentions Blingdenstone a look of terror passes the pech's face. It partially retreats into the stone.

"Blingdenstone! You want us to aid the deep gnomes?" It looks back and forth as if trying to see if anything is listening.

Quilian rests his hands on the pommel of his swords, although trying to look non-threatening only makes him look more so. He adds to Sereia's explanations.

"Ogrémoch’s Bane, I believe was the name. We hear he is.. Hostile. Perhaps he is causing trouble for you as well. We might be able to work together to end his threat."
