On Television and Radio, Talk of Obama’s Citizenship

The conspiracy theorists who have claimed for more than a year that President Obama is not a United States citizen have found receptive ears among some mainstream media figures in recent weeks.

Despite ample evidence to the contrary, the country’s most popular talk radio host, Rush Limbaugh, told his listeners Tuesday that Mr. Obama “has yet to have to prove that he’s a citizen.” Lou Dobbs of CNN said that Mr. Obama should do more to dispel the claims. Larry King, also of CNN, asked guests about it, and other media types, including the MSNBC hosts Chris Matthews and Rachel Maddow, merrily mocked the controversy. NBC News even did a segment on the subject.

Cable news is often stretched for news in the summertime, but the birth certificate case has been fueled by the combustible combination of luck, compelling video, an outlandish topic, and savvy activists.

Advocates of the issue, who are sometimes called birthers, have succeeded in calling attention to themselves through frequent calls to talk radio shows, e-mail messages to news organizations and a videotaped question at a Congressional town hall. The Associated Press said that Mr. Obama’s citizenship status had been one of the most popular topics for the wire service’s “Ask AP” column.

Mr. Dobbs, who also hosts a daily radio show, said on CNN that he is “getting calls now. Often.”

The conspiracy theory that Mr. Obama was born in Kenya, his father’s home, first took root among some elements of the right wing last year. In response, the Obama campaign scanned the candidate’s “certification of live birth” from Hawaii’s department of health and published it on the Internet. It confirms that Mr. Obama was born in Honolulu on Aug. 4, 1961. Numerous third parties have examined the birth certificate and concluded, as the Annenberg Center’s nonpartisan FactCheck.org Web site did last year, that it “meets all of the requirements from the State Department for proving U.S. citizenship.”

In an e-mail message to Mr. Dobbs’ producers on Thursday, Jon Klein, the president of CNN/U.S., wrote that “it seems this story is dead — because anyone who still is not convinced doesn’t really have a legitimate beef.”

In an interview Friday, Mr. Klein said the e-mail message should not be interpreted as an order to stop debating the subject. He defended Mr. Dobbs’ broadcast, saying that “what we do here all the time is dig into the truth about all kinds of controversial issues.”

“This smear was thoroughly debunked during the election,” said Eric Burns, the president of Media Matters for America, a liberal media monitoring organization.

Remarkably, there is even a reference to Mr. Obama’s birth in the “Births, Marriages, Deaths” column of The Honolulu Advertiser newspaper on Aug. 13, 1961. Still, the claims about Mr. Obama’s citizenship persist among a small but vocal group, essentially portraying Mr. Obama as a foreigner who has managed to conceal his origins for nearly five decades.

“It’s racist,” said Phil Griffin, the president of MSNBC. “It’s racist. Just call it for what it is.”

Mr. Griffin said the cable news coverage was set off by two back-to-back events: the introduction of a bill that would require presidential candidates to provide a copy of their original birth certificate (it has nine co-sponsors in the House and one in the Senate) and the video of a town hall held by a Republican Congressman that turned into a hearing on Mr. Obama’s citizenship.

At the town hall in late June, the Congressman, Mike Castle of Delaware, was angrily questioned by a woman who said of Obama, “he is not an American citizen, he is a citizen of Kenya.” Members of the crowd applauded approvingly, and Mr. Castle was heckled when he said Mr. Obama was indeed a U.S. citizen. Video of the confrontation was uploaded to YouTube on July 10. It took more than a week for the incident to receive widespread attention.

Mr. Griffin said the claims are legitimate to cover “in that there’s a segment of our population that believes this and keeps bringing it up.”

A number of MSNBC shows have covered the birthers’ claims in recent days, mostly in mocking tones. On “Hardball” Thursday evening, the radio talk show host G. Gordon Liddy asserted that Mr. Obama may be an “illegal alien,” leading the host Chris Matthews to hand Mr. Liddy a photocopy of the birth certificate.

The subject has percolated on the Internet and on right-wing radio talk shows for months. The founder of WorldNetDaily, a conservative Web site, has taken to buying billboards that ask “Where’s the birth certificate?”

But from more mainstream outlets, “the coverage has been minuscule” until this month, said Philip J. Berg, a lawyer who has challenged Mr. Obama’s citizenship in a number of lawsuits, unsuccessfully to date. Since the town hall meeting, “there’s been a vast uptick.”

He added: “If I could file a lawsuit against the national media, including The New York Times, I would do that, because I think you’ve all done an injustice by not covering Obama.”

Since mid-July Mr. Dobbs has discussed it repeatedly on his radio show and on TV, leading Media Matters to accuse him of “legitimizing baseless conspiracy theories.” Last week CNN said it investigated the claims, and a guest host on Mr. Dobbs’ own show concluded that it “found no basis for the questions about the president’s birthplace.”

Mr. Dobbs has said he believes Mr. Obama is a citizen, but he brought up the controversy repeatedly this week, wondering in particular why Mr. Obama has not provided a copy of his birth certificate so that “all of this nonsense goes away.” He apparently answered his own question Thursday evening, telling viewers that “Hawaii says it can’t release a paper copy of the president’s original birth certificate because they say the state government discarded the original document when the health department records went electronic some eight years ago.”

The Fox News Channel, with its deep bench of conservative hosts, has not addressed the controversy this week. But the message boards on its conservative forum The Fox Nation have thousands of comments about the birth certificate issue, including some that call Mr. Obama “the Kenyan candidate.”
A lot of journalists “live with this issue; we get e-mails, we get asked about it,” Brian Williams, the anchor of the “NBC Nightly News,” said on Wednesday’s broadcast.

He showed an excerpt from the YouTube video in a segment about the birthers that he said were “spreading lies” about Mr. Obama.

“So many conspiracy theories, so little time,” he concluded.

Comments are no longer being accepted.

Obama wasn’t born in Hawaii, he was born in outer space. There, I’ve settled it for once and for all.

The guest in this clip from MSNBC takes the “mainstream media” to task for getting behind the “birther” story:
//www.gotchamediablog.com/2009/07/msnbc-blames-mainstream-media-not.html

Lou Dobbs’ continued assertion of this subject, that somehow something about it is unclear, makes him look really ridiculous given that the guest host of his show debunked the theory, as the Daily Show rightly pointed out:
//www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-july-22-2009/the-born-identity

“The researchers contacted the Hawaii Health Dept. and confirmed that paper documents were discarded in 2001 when the department went paperless. That reportedly includes Pres. Obama’s original birth certificate.”

It has been widely reported that the State of Hawaii will not release a copy of the long form without Obama’s permission. Why is Jon Klein, the President of CNN, making up this stuff after all this time?

Wonderful article. Unfortunately, I highly doubt it, or any other media coverage, will put the issue to rest for those who, in their delusional state, cling to it so fiercely.

If one looks at what is truly fueling this conspiracy theory– as one group of concerned citizens at the politijab DOT com forum have been doing for months now–one quickly finds that some of the most dangerous and vile anti-government and racist hate groups are driving the issue and using it to recruit new members.

Many of the birthers are clinging to a vision of the USA that is long past, and maybe never existed. They fear change and diversity, and they cannot accept what is happening before their own eyes. These people are being recruited, slowly, into much more dangerous existing hate groups. They are being encouraged daily to “take up arms” and “join militias” and “take their country back at all costs” and “get that Kenyan usurper and his gorilla wife out of office”. Check any birther chat or blog and these types of comments are rampant. Most of the birthers are likely harmless “armchair warriors”, but such sentiments are dangerous and the racism present in them is absolutely sickening.

Please look further into the roots of this idiocy. That is where the real story exists. No one wants to see another tragedy like the recent events involving Von Brunn, who espoused birther theories on the internet before picking up his gun and shooting an innocent man.

So which hospital was he born at?

The birth certificate has to say so.

Mr. Stelter: “The Fox News Channel, with its deep bench of conservative hosts, has not addressed the controversy this week.”

Actually, a 30 second Google search turned up 3 separate instances where Fox News covered this story. Two by Bret Baier, and one by Sean Hannity.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cnuwqw6381k
//www.youtube.com/watch?v=sB-PrS9W3Yw

How could you have missed that? I wonder how many more instances I could uncover with more time or resources. Is this the quality of research that we should expect of you?

Just show the long form birth certificate and put the issue to bed. What are you hiding Mr. Obama?

Obama may well be a citizen, but he is not a natural born citizen; there’s a difference between the two. Regardless of where he was born, Obama cannot be a natural born citizen because he was a British citizen at birth thru his father, who was never a U.S. citizen.

The birth certificate issue is moot.

If his father is who he says he is then dad was a Kenyan citizen, and never a citizen of the U.S.

The President must be a Natural Born Citizen according to Article II Section 1 of the Constitution. The definition of an NBC is: Born on U.S. soil to two American citizen parents.

Ineligible. Usurper. Fraud. He belongs in prison. Every Executive Order and law he and his ‘administration’ has passed thus far are illegal.

You get what you vote for.

Obama has no one to blame but himself for the controversy. He has failed to produce records that past presidents have routinely made available to the public, even if they proved embarrassing (long form birth certificate, school records, etc.)

Two points:

The birth notices in Hawaiian newspapers were generated by the Hawaiian Health Department and sent to the local newspapers. An employee at the Hawaiian Star Bulletin stated, “We don’t have an editor who handles birth and marriage announcements; we print what we receive from the Department of Health Vital Statistics System. This is how we’ve always done it.”

In 1961 Hawaii, it was possible to obtain a birth certificate based on the affidavit of a family member. This was a long standing practice in Hawaii. Sun Yat-sen (emperor of china) was able to acquire a Hawaiian birth certificate via affidavit despite being born in China. //www.scribd.com/doc/9830547/Sun-Yatsen-Certification-of-Live-Birth-in-Hawaii

So it is possible to account for the “certification of live birth” and the newpaper announcements without a conspiracy.

One affidavit from one family member was enough to account for the “certification of live birth” and the newspaper announcements.

If Obama has nothing to hide and he wants to end the controversy, he should direct the State of Hawaii to release his long form birth certificate which will let eveyone know how it was obtained, along with all of his school records.

Lou Dobbs is correct. Obama is a citizen. BUT, he’s not a “Natural Born Citizen” which is the requirement to be President of the United States.

It matters not if he was born in Hawaii or if we ever see his real, long-form birth certificate. His father was Kenyan (his claim) and his mother was American. A Natural Born Citizen requires BOTH PARENTS to be American. The only governmental job which requires this!!!! Read the Constitution… oops, I forgot. Most of you lefty’s can’t read.

This is all a smoke screen to avoid the real issue and that is his true parentage…

Call me a birther… doesn’t matter. Half of this nation knows that he’s a Usurper.

Hmmm… maybe the REAL TRUTH is as Andy Martin proposed and that is that his REAL FATHER is Frank Marshall Davis… Google that!!!

I find it funny that you say factcheck.org said they saw it, and a few sentences down you said it was tossed 8 years ago, so just exactly what are the facts?

This is a stupid controversy started by the “wingnuts” in the Republican Party.

In honest respect to the President all should apologize for this hideous remarks. Limbaugh,Hannity,Beck,Lynn Cheney and now members of the Senate have joined the wingnut birthers.

Put me on record that President Obama is a citizen of the U,S, and he was born in Hawaii.

This “Birther” nonesense is descrediting the Republican Party and the Conservative movement. All please stop and devot the energy to energy, jobs and healthcare.

Was real questions should relate to his mother’s mental health, was his father a polygamist, and WERE HIS PARENTS MARRIED.

U.S.A. HOME to the weirdest populace on the face of the earth. can’t believe anybody that isn’t mentally ill or just a right wing nutbar spends a second on this stuff. the earth if flat you know, i have proof……

Why doesn’t O’Bama just show the Certificate? The original certificate like McCain had to, like I do?

I have my origianal Birth Certificate!

Even if O’Bama was born in Hawaii, he still does not meet the test under the constitution. His father was a Kenyan national. Under Immigration Law, the nationality of the father passes to the child.

He then left the US for Jarkarta to attend school. His school records show him as a indonesian citizen.

McCain had to undergo a joint resolution of congress to be declared natural born citizen to run. The test for a natural born citizen is that BOTH parents must be US citizens.

Obama, because he is African American (really Bi-racial American) gets off easy. If he would just tell the truth, every illegal alien in America would come to his defense, every black, etc.

What could we do? Who would dare throw him out of office? He would serve his term out of office. The Democrates could drag this out. O’bama has everything to gain by coming clean.

Why do media hacks, ignorant of the English language, (which obviously includes Mr. Stelter) always label those who disagree with the conventional wisdom (or information supplied by governments and their state controlled media), as “conspiracy theorists?”

Where’s the conspiracy?

Can’t people disagree with each other without being insulted with inaccurate, irrelevant labels?

The use of this word reeks of desperation by media-based state apologists. They seem desperately trying to stay relevant in a world that no longer listens to their falsehoods and misinformation- or at least take them seriously.

If this ridiculous mess were true, I doubt Obama would have to step down, and if he did, we would simply have Biden president. The whole thing is just a way for insecure racists to go on deluding themselves.

What’s the difference between a Birther and a Bircher? About 50 years. Betcha not a few diehard John Birch Society members are stirring this brew.

This article, like some many articles from the NYT misses the most significant point. A Certificate of Live Birth is not a long form birth certificate! Once again, the NYT decides that the story is about the birthers rather than the obvious question of eligibility and what facts support the questioning of President Obama. If the President has nothing to hide, he should just show his long form document that details the facts, witnessess surrounding his birth including the signatures of those witnesses. Why does Obama spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to defend himself against the legal challenges when all he has to do is provide this document? And why does such a “smart” guy go to lengths to hide his Occidental College records as well? Surely he is not embarrassed by his grades. After all, he readily admitted in his memoirs that he used recreational drugs…poor grades are no big deal. Perhaps it appropriately identifies him as a foreign student.

Hi-
It is time to call this what it is. There is a similar false claim about the “Protocol of the Elders of Zion”, a document created to smear Jews by ascribing repugnant practices and motives to them. Coming out of Czarist Russia, the smear has been repeatedly debunked, but is referred to by NAZI’s and other racists when a justification is required for their hatred of jews.
The ado about Obama’s citizenship is quickly falling into that category. It is used by people trying to cast doubts on the legitamacy of the Obama presidency by casting him as foreign and un-American, presumably because he is different than real Americans, i.e., half black. Call it what it is, and understand that some countries, like Germany, hve laws against trying to incite racial hatred.

More stupid, baseless weirdness from the loony far right. No wonder they are more marginalized than ever. These are probably the same kooks who believe the earth is really only a few thousand years old–despite all the evidence. Why should they respect anything like a birth certificate?

Don’t we have better things to waste our time on?

Don’t listen to “Psychobable Limbaugh”!
